Can you explain the story behind the name FINSTERFORST? “Thank you very much! We are very glad to be a part of the Napalm line-up! Our band name FINSTERFORST is a synonym for our home region – the Black Forest (Southwest Germany). The band is very devoted to our origin and roots, and we can wholeheartedly express the connection to our homeland.“ How would you describe your music to a fan who has never heard of you before? “Actually, it is not very easy to put all FINSTERFORST releases in the same genre. It is obvious that we created different music in the beginning. The music developed into something more mature and deeper - heavy guitar and bass riffs, brutal drums, furious and aggressive vocals, epic and mighty choirs, and hovering atmospheric keyboard walls…On top of that, our accordion sound combined with acoustic guitars delivers the typical color of FINSTERFORST’s music. These epic tunes contain all kinds of emotions and perfectly represent the mystical and breathtaking spirit of our homeland.“ Let’s talk about your latest recording »Rastlos«! “I think this album is by far the most mature and grown-up work we have ever created. The complex compositions are perfectly presented by the powerful, massive, and transparent production. We always want the music to have the right sound. Therefore, we put enormous effort into the recording and production process without wasting even one single thought about compromising anything that could have some sound-harming result.“ HIgHLIgHTS FINSTERFORST T-Shirt "Rastlos" M 17485 L 17486 XL 17487 14,50 eUR Hymns from the Black Forest Germany’s FINSTERFORST is one of the latest additions to the ever-growing Napalm family! We talked to Simon (guitar) about the band and the new album »Rastlos«. What are the lyrics of »Rastlos« about? “All the lyrics of »Rastlos« have the same topic, as the album is designed as a concept album. Since the music is very emotional and transports dynamic and atmospheric ups and downs, the lyrics do so, too. The main protagonist of the story lost everything and was forced to leave his homeland. It is not hard to imagine what kind of emotions and feelings you have in such a situation - hate, love, longing for the past, hope for a better future, rage, and desire for revenge.“ Please tell us something about the recording process! “As usual, we recorded this album at the Iguana Studios, which are located in nearby Freiburg in Southwest Germany. The recording sessions took us around six weeks, while later on, the mixing process with some additional programming had to be done. The atmosphere in the studio is always brilliant. Our producer and sound engineer ‚Almighty Christoph Brandes‘ has become a great friend of mine, and thanks to his relaxed and very disciplined working method, we always reach perfect results. And with the help of a massive consumption of pork knuckles, I don’t have to tell you that we really feel comfortable in the mighty halls of the Iguana Studios!“ Besides your individual band sound with an accordion, you used other special instruments in the past. Can we expect again interesting sounds on »Rastlos«? “Yes! This time, I wanted to work with some orchestral elements and experimented with different synth/keyboard sounds. As usual, Sevan Kirder (RED SHAMROCK, ex-ELUVEITIE) delivered some marvelous flute lines which are totally mindblowing!“ Let’s talk about the artwork. We simply wanted to have a drawing of a beautiful and ravishing landscape, which fits to the concept of »Rastlos« and pays homage to our beloved Black Forest. Olofsson totally nailed it, and we are honored that his artwork incarnates the visual appearance of this album. Listen to the album and you will understand perfectly what I am talking about! “ Is it possible to see you again live in near future? “We will celebrate the release of »Rastlos« on December1 th in our hometown Freiburg. In addition, more gigs are planned for the rest of 2012 and the following year. Stay tuned for many upcoming shows of FINSTERFORST. We are burning like hell and can’t wait to perform the new material live!“ Any last words? “Boys and girls! The Wolves are coming! Viking metal band VARG can look back on glorious years since the release of »Blutaar« and with their last album »Wolfskult«, which was released in March 2011, they hit the official German album charts (# 33) for the very first time. VARG move forward with huge and mighty steps and they´ll crown themselves with the release of their new album »Guten Tag«. With this record, VARG go way beyond any boundaries of pagan, death, black and folk metal, even German Rock and „Neue Deutsche Härte“ influences are nothing the band are afraid of. We have talked to VARG vocalist Freki about their music and the new album. Freki, tell us about your new album »Guten Tag«. How would you introduce it and what`s the difference to the previous albums? “»Guten Tag« is like waking up with a fist in your face. It´s a very diversified album, on which we granted a little more space for elements taken from several subgenres like hardrock, powermetal, death, thrash, etc. but in the end it´s still 100 % VARG. When you listen to »Guten Tag« after having heard our last record »Wolfskult«before, you will see that it´s not a real new era, it´s just more or less just the next logical step for us, leaving more and more boundaries behind. To label VARG as a pure pagan-band fitted only for our debut. So many bands just recopy their style again and again on every record, knowing that it´s the safe and good-selling way. I think we managed it quite well to do that step forward, not fearing development without betraying our roots.“ “Guten Tag” means “hello” in German. Why did you choose this title? “On one hand it means only „hello“, but on the other hand it means: „Wake up fucker, stop drowning in self-pity, stand up and fight“. Whole life is a struggle and if you want to achieve something, you have to fight for it. That’s the main statement and that’s why we chose this title. Of course we knew that it would be confusing people, just because it´s simplicity and it forces you to make your own theory. Actually it worked much better than we ever could have expected.“ Freki, your lyrics are mostly in German. Is it important to you to express in your own language? Don’t you fear the international audience won’t understand what you have to say? “Of course we are proud of all our records. Any of it is something like a manifest of what VARG stood for at that time. And no, we don´t fear international audience, quite the contrary! I think it´s not a unique feature anymore, just look how big RAMMSTEIN have become – the typical sound of german language just fits perfect with metal in my opinion. The pagan-scene still seems to be a vital scene, with outstanding bands, and most of them use their mother tongue as a brand label. Could you imagine ARKONA with English lyrics? Or FINNTROLL with German Lyrics? Or NEGURA BUNGET in Finnish? It´s just the most natural way for us to express ourselves, to create a unity of sound and words. But that doesn’t mean that we force ourselves to write only german lyrics - on the new record you can find our first song with English lyrics, with an amazing guest vocal feature of Jonne from KORPIKLAANI, which makes the song even more outstanding then it is already from its musical direction. We are really curious to see how it will be accepted by our fans – but in the end we always did what we wanted to do and so it will be in the future, maybe the next record is in Chinese, you never know.“ Chart-storming wolves are out for blood and serve their fans a record, that couldn´t be more diverse. If there´s a band in this usually oh-so-funny genre, who´s got the balls to raise the middlefinger high in the air, it´s VARG! The band are gonna play the HEIDENFEST tour with WINTERSUN and KORPIKLAANI this October/November. Watch out for their new album »Guten Tag« which has been released on October 5th as a limited Digipack including a bonus DVD.
