WHY I COACH ...
“I am passionate about
the sport and especially this
program. I had an incredibly
positive experience at Lehigh
as a student-athlete playing
both field hockey and lacrosse
here and I want the
current student-athletes to
enjoy that same type of
experience. I love working
with women athletes who
share the same priorities
that I had in college,
which were academics and
athletics.”
“Playing lacrosse at Lehigh was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I
loved going to play lacrosse everyday. I loved learning new concepts and new plays. I
loved watching our team improve each year. Now as a high school lacrosse coach, I
look forward to instilling in my players this same passion and enthusiasm for the game
of lacrosse that Lehigh’s program instilled in me!” – Jill Altshuler ‘96
“Having gone to Lehigh and having played under a great coach I feel very qualified
and confident to be a head Varsity and JV coach at the high school level. I feel I have so
much to offer my players because I played Division I Lacrosse. I find myself running
the exact drills and plays as we did at Lehigh. I really enjoy teaching but absolutely love
coaching.” – Elizabeth Brodbeck ‘98
Vanessa Abbott enters her first season as assistant women’s
lacrosse coach. Most recently Abbott was a four-year goalkeeper
for the Mountain Hawks and will work the goalkeepers
this season. She missed the 2003 season with an injury but still
managed to start 27 times in the cage for Lehigh. She started all
fifteen games her sophomore season of 2002, posting a career
high 145 saves.
Abbott, a native of Vero Beach, Florida, received her
bachelor’s degree in English from Lehigh in the spring of 2004.
All-Americans Jill Altshuler (left)
and Liz Brode Ota pursued careers
in coaching following graduation
from Lehigh.
New Coach, New
Philosophy for Lehigh
There’s a new coach and a new philosophy as the Lehigh Mountain
Hawks get set to open the 2005 lacrosse season. Liz Brode Ota returns to her
alma mater looking to bring stability to a program that
went 5-10 a year ago and has had four head coaches in
“ON THE AIR” four years. Ota’s team returns seven starters from a year
ago and she expects a talented group of freshmen to
make some immediate contributions. The first year
coach hopes to bring a better conditioned and better
prepared team to the turf at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
“We are working to improve fitness and stick work
and we will focus a great deal on strategy and planning
for each competition,” Ota said.
Lehigh’s attack should be solid as the Mountain
Hawks return five of the top eight scorers from a year
ago. Leading the way is Kellan Van Hoosen who netted
14 goals a year ago. She will get help up front from
sophomore Amy Chamberlain who started every game
as a freshman and tallied double digits in goals. Senior
Jen Fleming and Sophomore Elaine King also figure to
contribute to the Mountain Hawks attack.
In the midfield the Mountain Hawks return first team All-Patriot League
performer Barrie Cominsky. The senior captain tied for the team lead with 25
goals in 2004 and was second on the team with 35 points. Cominsky led the
Mountain Hawks scooping up 39 ground balls last season; she will be
counted upon to contribute on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Joining Cominsky in the midfield is fellow senior Sarah Starsoneck, a 17
goal scorer a year ago who led the Mountain Hawks with two game winning
Lehigh is one of the few lacrosse programs
in the nation to have regular
game audio broadcast on the
Internet. A broadcast schedule is
available on the Lehigh web site at:
www.lehighsportscom.
Also available is the “Lehigh Sports
Magazine Show” on DIRECTV. The
Lehigh Sports Magazine Show is a
weekly highlight programs that features
all varsity sports. Shown regionally
for nearly a decade, the
show was recently picked up by Fox
Sports Pittsburgh and DIRECTV
satellite, providing access to Lehigh
alumni, parents and fans across the
nation.
Junior defender Eileen Miller
tallies. Sophomore Vienna Paharaon
is also expected to contribute as will a
young, talented freshmen corps that
includes Christine Smith, Libby Gill
and Kara Chalanick.
Senior Co-Captain Kristen Sherry
will be counted upon to anchor the
defense. Sherry has started every game
the last two seasons and has been
extremely effective on the defensive
end for Lehigh. Joining her on the
backline is junior Eileen Miller. Last
season Miller saw action in every
game, picking up 25 ground balls on
the season. She will be counted upon
to solidify the Lehigh defense in 2005.
In the goal cage the Mountain
Hawks are solid with two-year starter
Kyle Begina. The junior brings a .507
save percentage to the table and has
shown the ability to be one of the top
netminders in the Patriot League.
Freshman Brittany Besler is expected
to contribute as the backup goaltender.
Ota admits the Mountain Hawks
are in somewhat of a rebuilding phase
but she and her staff are working hard
to enhance the program and return
Lehigh lacrosse to the upper echelon
of the Patriot League
“With the coaching changes over
the past few years, the program has
not been able to grow and gain
momentum,” Ota says. “I am hoping
that with a consistent coaching staff
and solid recruiting that we will
improve our national ranking and our
status in the Patriot League.”
Challenging
GREAT MINDS, INSPIRING GREAT IMAGINATIONS
PERSONAL AND POWERFUL
Lehigh University is the right size. It’s
small enough to be personal, yet large
enough to be powerful. We combine
learning opportunities found at a larger
research university with the personal
attention of a smaller, private college. It
is everything college is meant to be.
OUR CAMPUS
A mix of more than 100 historic and
contemporary structures dots the
wooded hillside of our Asa Packer
Campus, one of three contiguous
campuses on more than 1,600 acres. Our
Mountaintop Campus provides teaching
and research space principally for the
biosciences and the College of Education.
Our Murray H. Goodman Campus
houses many of our athletics facilities.
OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Student life at Lehigh is as rich outside
the classroom as it is inside, with more
than 130 clubs, intramural sports teams,
music and theatre programs, and Greek
organizations, and volunteer organizations
active on campus. Since these
groups are often student-led, they
provide a valuable opportunity to
broaden leadership skills in preparation
for life after Lehigh. And, as many of
these organizations are student-created,
there is no need to worry if you don’t see
a favorite activity - just grab a few
friends and launch the group yourselves!
CULTURAL RICHNESS
Mulicultural organizations take an active
role on campus by hosting and participating
in heritage celebrations, food and
dance festivals, speakers, roundtable
discussions, mentoring programs, career
forums, and much more. Lehigh
students also enjoy the opportunity to
explore the diverse cultures of the world
through both their fellow students, who
come from more than 65 countries, and a
variety of on-campus programming that
deals with the political, economic, and
social issues of the world today.
