LEHIGH 

SETTING THE SCENE 

No. 21 Lehigh travels to Bucknell for the first of two key Patriot League match-ups on 

the road. The Mountain Hawks are 4-2 overall (0-1 Patriot League) thanks to last 

week’s come-from-behind win over Yale, in which Lehigh scored 22 unanswered points 

down the stretch to rally for the win. In the comeback, senior quarterback Mark Borda 

suffered a serious leg injury. Sophomore Sedale Threatt was 5-for-5 in relief, with a 

touchdown pass. Threatt makes his first start this afternoon. The Bison, ravaged by 

injuries, seek their first league win of the season this afternoon as well. 

KEY STATS 

• Lehigh has the best winning percentage (82.35%) of any I-AA school over the last 

seven years (1998-2004). 

The Mountain Hawks have been nationally ranked in the two major national polls 

(Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today) for 23 consecutive weeks, dating back to the 

2003 season. 

Bucknell leads the Patriot League, averaging 192.5 rushing yards per game. The 

Lehigh defense is tops in the league and ninth nationally against the run, allowing just 

87 yards per game on the ground. 

Lehigh has won its last two games on artificial surfaces (at Bucknell in 2003, at Liberty 

in 2004). 

Lehigh’s Greg Petrosky is tenth nationally, averaging 14.1 yards per punt return. 

Bucknell’s Dante Ross is 14th in the country, with a 13 yard per punt return average. 

THE SERIES 

Lehigh leads the all-time series between these two schools, 36-29-3. The Mountain 

Hawks have captured the last seven meetings by an average score of 34-13. At Christy 

Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, Lehigh has won nine of the last twelve meetings. The 

two teams played to a 21-21 tie here in the 1987 season. Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo 

is 4-0 against the Bison. 

IF LEHIGH WINS...: 

The Mountain Hawks will earn their eighth straight win over Bucknell, and fourth 

straight in Lewisburg. 

Lehigh would capture its third straight win on the road. 

Quarterback Sedale Threatt would improve his mark to 1-0 as Lehigh’s starting signal 

caller. 

IF BUCKNELL WINS...: 

Lehigh would fall to 0-2 in the Patriot League for the first time since an 0-4 Patriot 

League start in 1997.

LEHIGH HEAD COACH PETE LEMBO 

Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo (Georgetown ‘92) has the highest winning percentage of 

any coach in Lehigh football history. Thanks to last week’s win over Yale, Lembo 

became the fastest LU coach to reach 40 victories, and one of only six to earn 40 wins.

MEASURING UP 

Lembo is 22-6 all-time against Patriot League opponents in his head coaching career. 

His .786 winning percentage is the second best in league history, behind only Holy 

Cross’ Mark Duffner, who coached the Holy Cross Crusaders from 1986-1991 (.962). 

QUICK TO REBOUND 

Thanks to last week’s win over Yale, Lehigh is 11-2 all-time under head coach Pete 

Lembo in games following a loss. In fact, under Lembo, Lehigh’s only back-to-back 

setbacks came in 2003, when the Mountain Hawks lost to eventual Ivy League champion 

Penn, and the following week at Division I-A UConn.

When Mark Borda went down with a leg 

injury vs. Yale (10/15), members of the 

Lehigh team immediately turned their 

thoughts to his well-being. On the field,

ABOUT BUCKNELL 

The Bison enter today’s game in search of 

their first Patriot League win. Bucknell’s 

season was turned upside down when 

they were put in the unique situation of 

having all three quarterbacks on their 

depth chart go down with injury. Bucknell 

was lucky to have a player with the 

versatility of senior QB/DB/PR Dante 

Ross to lead them. Bucknell has restructured 

its offense to accomodate the 

explosive running ability Ross possesses. 

Ross, second in the Patriot League in allpurpose 

yards, has touchdown ability 

every time he touches the ball. 

BUCKNELL COACH TIM LANDIS 

Tim Landis (Randolph-Macon ‘86) is 

entering his third season as head coach of 

the Bison. Landis coached at Saint Mary’s 

and Davidson prior to joining the 

Bucknell staff. While at Randolph-Macon, 

Landis was a first team All-Old Dominion 

Athletic Conference honoree both as a 

quarterback in football and a pitcher in 

baseball, Landis was inducted into the 

Randolph-Macon Athletic Hall of Fame in 

2000. 

LEHIGH-BUCKNELL IN THE PAST 

Today marks the 69th meeting between 

the Bison and the Mountain Hawks on the 

gridiron, with Lehigh leading the all-time 

series 36-29-3. Lehigh enters today’s 

game on a seven-game winning streak 

against the Bison. Bucknell’s last win 

came in 1997. Since the formation of the 

Patriot League in 1986, Lehigh has 

increased its lead in the all-time series, 

with a 12-6-1 record during those years.

LEHIGH 28, YALE 21 (OT) 

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (10/15) - No. 20 

Lehigh used a total team effort on both 

sides of the ball to down Yale 28-21 in 

overtime in front of 10,414 in attendance 

at Goodman Stadium. The 

Lehigh defense held strong throughout 

the fourth quarter and overtime 

period, holding Yale scoreless, and 

helped the Mountain Hawks pick up 

victory number four on the season, 

sending their record to 4-2 overall, 

while the Bulldogs fall to 2-3 on the 

year. The victory was head coach Pete 

Lembo’s 40th of his career, Lehigh’s 

fifth straight over Yale, and the 

Mountain Hawks first victory in 

overtime since defeating Fordham 26- 

23 in the Bronx, in 2002. Coming in 

late in the fourth in relief of an injured

Mark Borda set a career high in passing 

yards for the third week in a row with 

385 and he also tossed five touchdown 

passes, which tied his career high, in 

leading No. 16 Lehigh to a 40-17 victory 

over Bucknell at Goodman Stadium. 

The 385 yards by Borda marked the first 

time a Lehigh QB threw for over 300 

yards in a game since Kyle Keating 

threw for 344 yards versus Georgetown 

on October 25, 2003. Lehigh’s defense 

held Bucknell to 253 yards on the day, 

while the Mountain Hawk offense 

churned out 495 yards of its own, 95 on 

the ground and 400 through the air.

ON THE MARK 

Senior quarterback Mark Borda (Bethlehem, Pa.) had his 

season cut short by injury in Lehigh’s win over Yale (10/15), a 

game for which he was named the Patriot League offensive 

player of the week and the ECAC co-offensive player of the 

week. Despite appearing in only six games, the Patriot 

League preseason Offensive Player of the Year put up stellar 

numbers in 2005.

CARVING UP HIS PLACE IN HISTORY 

In Lehigh’s 54-26 win over Monmouth (9/3), Borda tied a 

Lehigh school record with six touchdown passes. Borda’s 

name will be etched in the all-time annals with former 

teammate Kyle Keating (2003 at Georgetown), and Scott 

Semtimphelter (1993 vs. Lafayette). 

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS 

Mark Borda connected with senior wide receiver Winfred 

Porter (Hollywood, Fla.) on a 91-yard touchdown strike in the 

second quarter of Lehigh’s win at No. 15 Harvard (10/01). 

The bomb was the second-longest TD pass in Lehigh history.

AERIAL ASSAULT 

The Mountain Hawks have thrown 50 or more passes in a 

game twice this season: 53 at Delaware (9/10) and 51 vs. Yale 

(10/15). Those instances marked the first time that a Lehigh 

team aired it out 50 or more times in a game since the 

Mountain Hawks threw 51 passes at Colgate in 1997. 

KEEPING BUSY IN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL 

Lehigh’s 36-for-51 effort last week marked the first time Lehigh 

completed 35 passes in a game since 1999. Not only did Lehigh 

throw 51 passes last week, but Yale threw the ball 53 times, the 

most pass attempts by a Lehigh opponent since Lafayette threw 

58 passes at Lehigh in 2001. 

RED ZONE SUCCESS 

Lehigh scored six touchdowns in six opportunities in the red 

zone (inside the opponent’s 20-yard line) in the win at No. 15 

Harvard (10/01). The Mountain Hawks have come away with 

points in 90% of red zone opportunities in 2005.

Senior wide receiver Gerran Walker (Atlanta, Ga.) is Lehigh’s 

leading receiver through the team’s first six games. Walker 

ranks nineteenth nationally, averaging almost 136 all-purpose 

yards per game in 2005.

GAINING YARDAGE WITH THE GROUND GAME 

In Lehigh’s Patriot League opener vs. Holy Cross (10/8), the 

Mountain Hawks ran the ball 54 times for 206 yards. That effort 

marked the first time since 2002 that the Mountain Hawks ran 

the ball over 50 times in a game (53 vs. Yale). 

STAYING REMARKABLY BALANCED 

Despite a disproportionate number of passing plays last week, 

the Lehigh offense has been fairly balanced in its attack throughout 

2005. Through Lehigh’s first six games:

DEFENSE DOES WELL IN THE RAIN 

Despite a record rainfall and treacherous footing at Goodman vs. 

Holy Cross (10/8), the Lehigh defense put forth perhaps its best 

effort of the 2005 campaign to date. The Mountain Hawks held 

Holy Cross to just 70 yards rushing and 188 yards overall. 

Lehigh limited Holy Cross to over 20 points below its per-game 

average, and the defense allowed only seven points.

AHYE SAVES THE DAY...TWICE 

Sophomore defensive back Julian Ahye (New York, N.Y.) made 

two critical plays in Lehigh’s come-from-behind win over Yale 

(10/15). Ahye picked off a pass in the final minutes of the fourth 

quarter to stop a Yale drive and send the game to overtime. In 

the extra session, Ahye batted down a ball in the end zone that 

would have tied the game, but ended it instead. 

GRAZIANI COMES UP BIG 

Senior linebacker Anthony Graziani (Pen Argyl, Pa.) leads the 

team with 56 stops on the season.. He made several key plays in 

Lehigh’s win at Harvard (10/01). Graz picked off a career high 

two passes, he recorded six tackles, and registered 1.5 sacks in 

that win. 

AUSTIN IS ALL OVER IT 

Lehigh junior safety Julian Austin (Plainfield, N.J.) earned 

Patriot League defensive player of the week accolades after he 

put forth quite a performance in Lehigh’s win at VMI (9/24). He 

matched his career high with eight tackles, returned a fumble 34 

yards for the game’s first touchdown, and intercepted a VMI pass 

on the Lehigh 21-yard line with just 18 seconds remaining in the 

game, preserving the two-point Lehigh win.

The Lehigh defense leads the Patriot League in sacks with 16 so

Lehigh freshman punter Jason Leo (Harleysville, Pa.) pinned

and three of those four punts were downed inside the ten yard 

line. The Bulldogs returned just one punt on the day, for a 

grand total of one yard. 

QUITE A CHALLENGE 

The 2005 Lehigh schedule is shaping up to be the toughest in 

many years, and arguably the most difficult yet under head 

coach Pete Lembo. Among Lehigh’s non-Patriot League 

opponents:

GIVING THE SCOREBOARD OPERATOR A WORKOUT 

Lehigh’s 49-point performance at No. 15 Harvard was the 

Mountain Hawks’ second 40-plus point performance in their 

first four games (54 vs. Monmouth, 9/3). Not surprisingly, 

Lehigh is 12-0 all-time under Pete Lembo when scoring 40 or 

more points in a game. 

A PLETHORA OF TARGETS 

Part of Lehigh’s offensive game plan is to keep the opposing 

defenses on their heels by using a myriad of receivers. So far in 

2005, 13 different Lehigh receivers have caught at least one pass. 

In 2004, 14 different receivers caught passes, including ten 

Lehigh players with receptions of 30 or more yards. 

CLAMPING DOWN ON THE DEFENSIVE END 

Lehigh has not allowed 40 points in a game since a playoff loss 

at Delaware in 2000. That day, the Blue Hens topped the 

Mountain Hawks 47-22. In the regular season, the last time a 

Lehigh team allowed 40+ points in a game: a 45-38 loss to 

Hofstra in 1997. 

LEHIGH ALL TIME IN OVERTIME 

Lehigh is 4-2 all-time in overtime games, including a 2-1 mark 

under head coach Pete Lembo. Earlier this year, the Mountain 

Hawks dropped a 34-33 OT decision at No. 10 Delaware. Last 

week, Lehigh rallied from a 15-point deficit to top Yale by a 28- 

21 score in OT at Goodman Stadium.

RECOVERING FROM KATRINA 

When devastating Hurricane Katrina 

ripped through the New Orleans area last 

month, members of the Lehigh program 

turned their thoughts to the families of 

four teammates from that area: freshman 

DL Paul Bode, sophomore DB Chris

Lewis, and junior WR Lee Thomas

FAMILIAR FACES 

Two Lehigh starters have been granted a 

medical hardship waiver and a fifth year 

of eligibility in 2005. Wide receiver Adam 

Kovacs (Hellertown, Pa.) and linebacker 

Anthony Graziani (Pen Argyl, Pa.) both 

return to the Mountain Hawks this season. 

Kovacs is an environmental science major, 

and Graziani is pursuing his degree in 

supply chain management.
