HEAD COACH DEBBIE UTESCH
Debbie Utesch is in her eleventh year as
the head cross country and distance coach at
Lehigh. In 2006, Utesch coached two of her
more successful teams, as both the Lehigh
men and women finished the season ranked
within the top-ten of the Mid-Atlantic
Region, and produced top-ten finishes at the
prestigious Iona Meet of Champions, as well
as third (women) and fourth (men) place finishes
at the Patriot League Championships.
Four Mountain Hawks were named to the
All-League teams, including Jen Schappert,
who finished second overall for the second
consecutive season. Schappert then went
onto earn her second straight All-Region
and Academic All-American honors. To
top it off, Schappert became the first runner
in school history to qualify for the NCAA
National Championships.
In 2005, Utesch led the men to a numbereight
ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region,
the highest ever in her reign at Lehigh, as the
Mountain Hawks finished in the top-ten of
every race they ran in, except the prestigious
Paul Short Run, where they placed 11th. The
men placed fourth and the women sixth at
the 2005 Patriot League Championships,
while three Lehigh runners were named to
the All-Patriot League teams.
Utesch’s accolades at Lehigh include having
coached 18 All-Patriot League selections
in cross country, an ECAC champion (Steve
Gourley-1999), two Patriot League runnerups
(Alex L’Heureux and Schappert) and the
Patriot League record holder in the 3000-meter
steeplechase (Alex L’ Heureux-8:54.72).
Six years ago, she was appointed an NCAA
Mid-Atlantic Regional representative for
women’s cross-country and was re-elected
for this position in 2002.
Utesch’s 1999 men’s team finished third at
the Patriot League Championships, the highest
during her tenure. Utesch’s male athletes
have broken four school records including
the indoor 1000-meters and the mile, which
had stood for nearly 30 years.
The 2000 Patriot League Women’s Cross
Country Coach of the Year, Utesch led the
Mountain Hawk women to a second place
finish at the league championships that same
season, the highest in her time. In addition,
Utesch has coached a Lehigh woman
to at least a top-three finish at the Patriot
League Championships in the 3000-meter
steeplechase in every year but one since its
inception. Utesch’s female athletes have
broken an impressive ten school records in
indoor and outdoor track during her time at
Lehigh. Four times in her seven seasons, the
Mountain Hawk women have been regionally
ranked (10th in 2000, 11th in 2001, 15th
in 2004 and ninth in 2005).
The success of Utesch’s teams does not
stop on the trail or track however, as evidenced
with the men’s cross country team
earning USCCCA Academic All-American
Team honors in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005,
while the women earned the same distinction
in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Utesch came to Lehigh after serving as
associate head cross country coach and assistant
track coach at Millersville University
from 1994-96. During her tenure there, she
coached nationally ranked Division II track
and cross-country teams. The Millersville
men’s track & field team earned a ranking as
high as 13th in 1996 while the women’s track
and field team ranked 18th that same year.
As assistant track coach, Utesch helped
coach a total of five All-Americans, whose
events ranged from the 3000 meters to the triple
jump. In 1996, the Millersville women’s
track and field team won the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference title. Utesch was
also named to the ECAC and Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games
committees during her time at Millersville.
Utesch earned her bachelor of science
degree in business administration from the
University of Rhode Island in 1988, where
she was a member of both the cross country
and track teams. She earned her M.B.A.
from St. Francis College (PA) in 2000.
Utesch and her husband Matt, the head
track & field coach at Lehigh, reside in Bethlehem
with their daughter Sydney and son
Tyson.

HEAD COACH MATT UTESCH
Matt Utesch is in his eleventh season
as head track and field coach for men and
women at Lehigh. Last season, Utesch
mentored 14 All-Patriot League selections,
nine All-East performers and one athlete
that qualified for the NCAA East Regional
Championship (Sean Swift). In 2006, Utesch
added five school records to the record
board, had 15 All-Patriot League selections
and five NCAA East Regional qualifiers.
During the 2005 season, Utesch guided 15
All-Patriot League selections, two all-east
performers, two East Regional qualifiers, and
Lehigh’s first-ever male athlete to qualify for
the NCAA National Championships (Vaclav
Malek).
In the 2003 season, Utesch added his
second Patriot League Coach of the Year
Award. Utesch has also served as a member
of the NCAA Cross Country Track and Field
Committee and the Chairman of the 2005 National
Championships, held in Sacramento.
During his tenure at Lehigh, Utesch has
coached several Patriot League record holders,
including Patrick Dugan (javelin), Chris
Lambert (pentathlon), Francis Vincent (triple
jump), George Evans (200-meters, 60 meters),
Alex L’Heuerux (3,000-meter steeplechase),
Justina Barone (pentathlon, 55-meter hurdles,
400 hurdles), Vaclav Malek (decathlon), and
Lucinda Hull (3,000-meter steeplechase). In
addition, he had mentored two Penn Relays
Champions in Dugan and Malek, as well as
135 All-Patriot
League selections
and 61 Patriot
League Champions.
Over 125
school records
have fallen under
Utesch’s watch,
running the
gamut of events
from sprints
and hurdles to
distance and
throws. Utesch
has also coached
nine Patriot
League Athletes
of the Meet, including Justina Barone, Alan Ferguson,
Vincent and most recently, Malek.
This past summer Utesch enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime
experience as he was afforded the opportunity
to travel across the world to Pakistan to take part in
a joint venture between the United States Olympic
Committee (USOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia
(OCA). Utesch worked with coaches on their systematic
training program at the country’s Olympic
Training Facility.
Prior to coming to Lehigh, Utesch served as assistant
track and cross-country coach at Lafayette
from 1994 through ’97. At Lafayette, he specialized in
coaching jumps, pole vault, hurdles, and multi-event
athletes. During his tenure, Utesch produced four
athletes with a combined eight Patriot League titles
between them. Three of these athletes also hold
Patriot League records and placed as high as fifth
in the IC4A Championships. Under Utesch, Lafayette
finished second in the 1997 Patriot League
Championships beating a highly competitive
Bucknell squad.
Utesch earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in
philosophy and religion with a minor in communications
from Doane College (Nebraska) in 1990.
While at Doane, he was a two-time NAIA qualifier
in the pole-vault placing as high as ninth nationally.
He was also a part of seven NAIA conference
championship teams.
Utesch and his wife Debbie, the head cross
country coach at Lehigh, reside in Bethlehem with
their daughter Sydney and son Tyson.
MOUNTAIN HAWKS YOUNG AND HUNGRY
TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW
With a large number of athletes lost to graduation off of last year’s
team head coach Matt Utesch will look to some new faces to lead the
2008 team, starting with co-captains E.J. Schuck and Kyle Manning and
seniors Mark Mattei and Brian Voorhis. Lehigh also returns a strong trio
of sophomores in Nick Ray, Franklin Johnson and Khalil Uqdah. “Those
three all have very good leadership ability,” Utesch explains, “And I
believe that they will continue to develop those traits in addition to picking
up right where they left off following very successful freshmen seasons.”
Junior Scott Robinson, the 2006 Patriot League Outdoor Rookie
of the Meet returns to the track this year after not competing in 2007 and
he should bolster the Mountain Hawks in the sprints and hurdles.
EVENT-BY-EVENT
Multi-event: Utesch is excited about the possibilities with both
Schuck and Voorhis returning as those two look to improve upon their
solid performances of a year ago. Schuck finished second in the heptathlon
at the Patriot League Indoor Championships and has performed
well at the indoor and outdoor championships during each of his first
two seasons at Lehigh. Voorhis was a member of the second place 4x100
relay team at last year’s outdoor championships and he scored in the
decathlon at the 2006 outdoor championships.
Sprints: “There is an interesting dynamic with all of our sprinters in
that each of them competes in other events,” explained Utesch. Leading
the way here for the Mountain Hawks are Franklin Johnson, Khalil
Uqdah and Brian Voorhis. Utesch also expects freshman Geoff Yeh to
step in from the start and contribute. Johnson and Voorhis were both
All-League selections a year ago after helping the 4x100 relay team to
a second place finish at the championships. Uqdah was an All-League
performer during the indoor season and qualified for the outdoor IC4A
Championships.
Hurdles: The return of junior Scott Robinson gives Lehigh a much
needed boast not to mention one of the top performers in the entire
Patriot League. Robinson won the 100 hurdles at the 2006 Outdoor
Championships and he took first place in the same event in the annual
Lehigh – Lafayette dual that year. The 6-5 Californian will team with
sophomores Evan Green and Brian Monetti, who was injured last year,
to give the Mountain Hawks a strong trio in these events.
Mid-Distance/Distance: Despite the loss of the Ahearn brothers
(Brian and Kevin) to graduation, Lehigh returns a strong contingent in
these events, including Kyle Manning, Dan DeWitt, Jonathan Wetzel,
Matt Foley and Phil Wright. Brian Ahearn will also be back to help
coach, a move that Utesch is extremely excited about. “Brian had a great
career for us and I think with him staying here to help coach will really
help the younger guys a great deal.” A former walk-on to the track
team, Manning has risen to team captain and is described as a “very
smart runner.” He was a 2006 All-Patriot League outdoor selection and
last year was a member of the third place 4x800 team that became only
the third team in school history to run 7:31 in the event.
Jumps: With junior Dominic Aversa (has cleared 16’) as well as
sophomore Khalil Uqdah (cleared 17’) and transfer Doug Ricotto (has
cleared 15’), Utesch expects the pole vault to be one of the Mountain
Hawks strongest events this season. Add senior Brian Voorhis, and
juniors E.J. Schuck and C. Austin Wade to the mix in the long jump, and
Lehigh has a strong contingent of athletes to work with. Sophomore
Franklin Johnson, who finished seventh in the
triple jump at the 2007 USA Junior Outdoor
Track and Field Championships and third in
the long jump at the outdoor league championships
gives the Mountain Hawks another
strong option in these events.
Throws: All of the discussion about Mountain
Hawk throwers begins and ends with
sophomore Nick Ray, who made an immediate
impact as a freshman in the shot put, hammer
throw and weight throw. Ray was a Second-
Team Outdoor selection in 2007 and garnered
Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors after
his performance at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
“Nick exploded onto the scene last year with a
second place finish in the shot at our championships,”
Utesch said. He worked extremely
hard in the off-season, surpassing all of his
lifting goals by mid-summer.” Other throwers
to keep an eye on are senior Mark Mattei and
freshman Tim Dempsey who Utesch says has a
chance to be very good.
CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
After losing a strong quartet of runners to
graduation from last year’s team, head coach
Debbie Utesch will look to a younger crop of
Mountain Hawks to begin making their own
headlines in 2007. Leading the way are co-captains
Dan DeWitt and Jonathan Wetzel. De-
Witt placed in the top-40 at last year’s Patriot
League Championships and he placed eighth
at the annual Lehigh – Lafayette dual. Wetzel
finished sixth at the Lafayette dual and placed
24th at the league championships. Other returning
Mountain Hawks are Ben Lampi, Leo
Smith, Jared LeBar, Ken Burgess, Joe Kelly, Pat
Holmes and Carl Luenig.
As it did in 2005, Lehigh will host the
NCAA Regional Championships, in addition
to the Lehigh Valley Championships and the
annual Paul Short Run. The Mountain Hawks
will also take on archrival Lafayette in Easton
and they will run in the Penn State National
Invite in early October. This year’s Patriot
League Championships are set to take place
in Easton on the campus of Lafayette College,
marking the third race Lehigh will compete
in on that course this season. The Mountain
Hawks have won their annual dual with Lafayette
eight straight years and will look for their
fifth straight top-15 finish at the Paul Short Run
which is fast becoming one of the nation’s top
races.
LEHIGH TRACK/CROSS COUNTRY IN THE HALL OF FAME
Long time cross country and track head
coach John Covert brought a period of sustained
success to Lehigh. The head coach of
the cross country and track programs from
1967 to 1992, Covert led Lehigh to regional
prominence on the cross country scene. For all
of his success and efforts, Covert was inducted
into the Roger S. Penske Lehigh Athletics Hall
of Fame in May 2005.
During his time at Lehigh, Covert’s men’s
cross country teams captured six ECAC conference
championships and six IC4A titles. On
the men’s side, Covert’s cross country teams
posted a record of 199-99 overall, including a
23-2 mark versus rival Lafayette during his 25
years as the team’s head coach.
At the same time, his coaching success carried
over to the track as he coached the men’s
team for 25 years and the women’s team for
its first five years as a varsity sport. On the
men’s side, Covert’s squad was 98-21 overall
in indoor track action and 98-47 in the spring
outdoor season. Combined, they posted a 35-
12 record against Lafayette. From the inception
of the women’s track program in 1987-88
through the end of his tenure in 1992, Covert’s
women’s teams were 18-17 overall.
Prior to his arrival at Lehigh,
Covert spent ten years as a coach
at Ossining High School in Ossining,
N.Y, where he was also a history
teacher. In his ten seasons
as head coach, Covert’s cross
country teams won ten sectional
titles, seven state crowns, and
twice finished as the no. 1 high
school cross country team in the
nation.
A 1953 graduate of Buffalo
State, Covert gained international
recognition as both a coach and
an administrator. In 1983, he
the Soviet Union and Germany. A former
president of the IC4A Coaches Association,
success to Lehigh. In Covert’s
25 year tenure in Bethlehem, his
country course. His teams went
a combined 58-14 against rival
Lafayette under his tutelage.
ROBERT B. JACKSON ‘35
Robert B. Jackson made an immediate
impact on the track at
Lehigh, establishing a new Lehigh
record in the 220 yard hurdles
as a freshman. Jackson toppled
several other records, and he ultimately
made the eastern Olympic
qualifying trials. Jackson earned his
degree in business administration
in 1935, and was later elected to
the Delaware County (Pa.) Athletes
Hall of Fame.
E. MORTON LAMB ’31
Lamb, inducted in 1998, ran an
unbelievable 9.8 second 100-yard
dash on a dirt track in 1931. In the
100-yard and 220-yard dashes, he
won an incredible 22 consecutive
races over the course of three
seasons. His crowning achievement
came on April 16, 1931, when he
the Penn Relays.
PAUL SHORT ’34
Short, a 2000 inductee, participated
in football, wrestling, baseball,
and lacrosse as a Lehigh student.
He later joined the Athletics staff at
his alma mater, serving from 1938
until his death in 1967, interrupted
only by service in World War II.
An avid supporter of the Lehigh
the Lehigh cross country course
bears his name. Paul Short passed
away on November 17, 1967 at the
age of 57.

LEHIGH VS. LAFAYETTE – THE RIVALRY
On May 14, 1881, the first Lehigh intercollegiate track &
field meet was contested on campus. The opponent, appropriately
enough, was Lafayette. And just as appropriate
Lehigh came out victorious. The schools didn’t meet
again until 1895 and last year marked the 104th time the
Mountain Hawks and the Leopards have tangled in outdoor
track & field. Lafayette holds the overall series lead
60-44-3, but Lehigh has won 25 times in the past 33 years.
The squads first moved indoors in 1973 with Lehigh leading
the series 17-15.
The historic men’s cross country battles between Lehigh
and Lafayette began in 1920 with Lehigh earning a 27-28
victory. Since that time, the two schools have met on 77
occasions with Lehigh leading overall 44-32-1. In 1964,
the first and only tie occurred with both teams scoring 28.
The Mountain Hawks caged the Leopards with a 1 thru 7
sweep in 1975. The Lehigh men have won 30 of the last 36
meetings including three consecutive lop sided victories.
LEHIGH FACILITIES
The Lehigh track and field and cross-country teams, as well as
all of the university’s varsity teams, have the luxury of competing
and practicing in some of the best facilities in the nation.
Rauch Field House includes 62,000 square feet of clear indoor
space, including six 42” lanes and excellent field facilities suitable
for indoor track meets. Just last season, Lehigh hosted the Patriot
League Indoor Track Championships, and over the years, Rauch
has been home to numerous invitationals and many of the nation’s
finest runners, including Renaldo Nehemiah, Leroy Burell, and
Sydney Maree.
During the summer of 2001, Lehigh resurfaced the outdoor
track with ProTurf. The rubberized all weather surface features
nine lanes and four jump pits, in addition to other standard event
features.
Lehigh will host the 15th annual John Covert Classic this year.
This indoor meet is held in honor of Lehigh’s most successful track
and field coach, who compiled a 210-86-1 record in track and a
194-99-3 mark in cross country during 25 years of service from 1967
to 1992. Besides his outstanding coaching record, Covert designed
the famed Goodman Campus cross country course, initiated the
internationally recognized Paul Short Run, directed two NCAA
Cross Country Championships at Lehigh, and brought many top
schools to compete in it. For all of his efforts, Covert was inducted
into the Roger S. Penske Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in the
spring of 2005.
Circling the Goodman Campus is one of the nations finest cross
country courses. The grass trails wind through the campus’ various
athletic fields, with South Mountain providing a picturesque background.
The course was the site of the 1993 NCAA Division I Cross
Country Championships, an event Lehigh hosted in 1979 and 1983.
In addition the course has hosted the ECAC and IC4A Championship
meets on numerous occasions as well as the Patriot League
Championships. This season, Lehigh will host both the 2005 Patriot
League Championships, as well as the NCAA District Championships,
an event that returns to South Mountain for the first time in
several years. The course was also renovated in the past five years
to make it an even better course to run and more spectator friendly.
Cundey Varsity
House is
the most recent
addition
to Lehigh’s
athletics
offerings.
Substantial
renovations
to the Varsity
House included the addition of a 5,000-square foot weight room,
new sports medicine equipment, locker room, and meeting areas,
including locker rooms for the track and cross-country teams.
The Goodman Campus also has fields for various other sports,
which include soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, as well as baseball
and softball diamonds.
On the Asa Packer campus is a recently completed fitness
center, which is used by athletes, students and faculty. The facility
features $100,000 of new equipment, including free weights, body
master selectorized machines, treadmills, stationary bicycles, rowing
machines and stair climbers.
Aerobic and anaerobic training programs that take into account
nutrition, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular elements
are designed for any individual seeking guidance. There are also
supervised workouts, machine orientation and the teaching of
proper techniques are included in this all-encompassing fitness
program.
In addition to the Welch Fitness Center, Taylor Gym also
houses the Roger S. Penske Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame, two
pools, squash, racquetball, basketball and volleyball courts, and a
new climbing wall. The overall renovation project of Taylor Gym,
completed several years ago, also included the Meerwarth Lobby
and the Spiegel Fitness Center Mezzanine. Taylor houses offices
for the athletics department staff, including the sports medicine
area.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
LEHIGH RUNNING--
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
In 1881, the first NCAA sanctioned track meet
ever competed on the collegiate level was contested
at Lehigh University. The dual pitted the Engineers
against the Leopards of Lafayette College. Lehigh
won the meet.
One hundred and twenty-six years later, the
rivalry between the two schools is greater, and the
competition is fiercer than it has ever been.
Another milestone in Lehigh track and field
history took place in 1896. Thomas Burke, former
Engineer track and field coach, won the 100 meters
and 400 meters during the first modern Olympics
in Athens, Greece. A twig from his original Olympic
wreath resides in the Roger S. Penske Hall of Fame.
The wreath was given to winners of their respective
races.
In 2003, the Lehigh men’s track and field team
recorded 13 points and tied for tenth place at the
Outdoor IC4A Championships. This was their highest
finish in recent history.
Men’s cross-country began at Lehigh in 1919.
In the 87 seasons since, the team has accumulated
more than 300 victories against top competition.
Last season, the Lehigh cross country teams hosted
the Patriot League Championships and the NCAA District
Championships, an event that returned to South
Mountain for the first time in several years.
The women’s squad embarks on its 23rd season
of intercollegiate cross-country. Women’s track
and field began at Lehigh in 1988. The team won
the 1992 Patriot League title, the first ever league
championship won in any sport at Lehigh. The 1994,
1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2004 and 2005 squads
were recognized as NCAA Academic All-America
teams. To achieve this honor, the team’s combined
GPA was over 3.0. The women’s program made history
in 2003 when freshman Lauren Barrett became
the first Lehigh athlete to qualify for the NCAA
National Championships and the men’s team made
history of its own in 2005 when Vaclav Malek qualified
in the high jump.
Paul Short Run
This year will mark the 34th running of the Lehigh Paul Short Run on the university’s famed Goodman
Campus course. The event is run in honor of the late Paul Short who was Lehigh’s Business Manager of
Athletics and a cross-country enthusiast. Last year the run attracted 44 men’s teams and is considered
one of the top invitational meets in the nation.
