ATHLETICSAcademic Achievements“The concept of the two-sport athlete is a dinosaur,”explains Ota. “What helps Christy is that she has two headcoaches that relate to her exceptionally well. I don’t think Julieor I resent the fact that we don’t have her for half the year, because we know she’s gaining competitive experience in theoff season.”“Christy is very talented, she has all the natural gifts,” addsMazer. “She also has a very strong work ethic. Most athleteshave either the natural talent or the work ethic, but she hasboth, and that’s why she can excel.”The numbers speak for themselves: a team-best eight goalslast field hockey season, followed by 22 goals on the lacrossefield in the spring. But equally important for Christy is whatshe’s accomplished off the field. When she’s not burning opposing players with her speed,Smith has been burning pizza sauce in a lab setting, as partof her Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) capstonecourse. As part of this six-credit, year-long course, Smith anda team of students have been working with start-up entrepreneursto develop and commercialize a new product thatwill prevent pizza sauce from burning when left cooking on astove top.The team has presented the idea of using magnetic stirrers, most commonly used in chemistry labs.“Christy and the team’s first job was to investigate thetechnology to determine if it indeed could be manufactured tomeet pre-established technical specs and then to explore themarketplace to identify potential market applications,” saysPat Costa, Christy’s professor in this IBE capstone course. The team will formally present its findings to the Ben FranklinTechnology Partners on the Goodman Campus in December.“Christy has demonstrated strong leadership skills,” notesCosta. “She was instrumental in leading the initiative to developan independent testing protocol. She burnt lots of saucelast semester in the lab, and analyzed the data for its meaningfulnessto the project. She has exhibited all the analytical skillsthat would help her become a successful engineer as well as avisionary business leader.“Costa concludes, “Christy has the kind of work ethic andpersonal integrity that has made everyone associated with herin the IBE Program a better student and better teacher becauseshe is part of our community.”In addition, Smith has spent the last two summers gainingvaluable experience interning at Synthes, a medical devicecompany out of West Chester.“I was able to get the internship through alumni contacts,”says Smith. “I’ve been there the last two summers; the firstyear I worked on the manufacturing side and this past year Iworked in product development.”In her first year, Smith worked predominantly on time studiesand the plant layout, but in product development she spenttime in cadaver labs. Among the medical devices that Synthesspecializes in are plates and screws for broken bones. With her senior year underway, Christy is keeping her postgraduation options open. As the field hockey season continues,Christy is enjoying the opportunity to play in the same midfieldline as her sister Lindsey, a sophomore, who like Christyplays both field hockey and lacrosse for Lehigh and majors inindustrial engineering.“Because of the positive experiences I had early on, I certainlyencouraged Lindsey to come to Lehigh too,” says Christy.“It’s just an added bonus to get to play along side her.”And an added bonus forLehigh to have a well-roundedstudent-athlete like ChristySmith on its playing fields andin its classrooms.Tom Gilbert ‘07 was namedthe 2007 Patriot Leaguemen’s swimming and divingScholar-Athlete of the Year,as voted on by the league’ssports information directors.Gilbert is a four-time All-Patriot League selection in thepool for the Mountain Hawks, and also carries a 3.47 cumulativegrade point average as anaccounting major.“I am very humbled to winthis award,” said Gilbert. “Ifeel our league continues toget faster and faster in the Division I realm of our sport, yet wecontinue to be tops in the classroom, and to represent that is agreat feeling.”Gilbert earned first team all-league honors after postinga pair of second place finishes at February’s Patriot LeagueChampionships. The Robesonia, Pennsylvania native broke hisown school records in both the 100 and 200 yard backstrokeevents, and added a fourth place finish in the 400 yard individualmedley. A team captain, Gilbert also was a member offour top-four finishing relay teams at the championships, andhelped lead the Lehigh men to a fourth place finish overall. In the classroom, Gilbert was twice named to the PatriotLeague’s Academic Honor Roll. As a student, Gilbert successfullymet the challenges of being an accounting major, particularly in his junior year and was unhindered in hispursuit of athletic success. Gilbert earned an internship withPricewaterhouseCoopers in the summer of 2006, and parlayedthat experience into a job which he accepted early in theacademic year.“Winning this award means a lot to me because four yearsago Lehigh gave me an opportunity and an environment tosucceed,” said Gilbert “I feel this award signifies the hard workand the challenges it took along the way. To see the work finallypay off is a great way to end my senior year.”Gilbert becomes the third Lehigh men’s swimmer to benamed Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Jeff Cline (1996)and Jason Boire (2000).

Proceeds from this particular eventwent to the fight against muscular dystrophy. For a dollar,Lehigh students, student-athletes and staff were able toenjoy breakfast at night and were provided an opportunityto spend time with friends and relax. Many studentathletessaw the event as a pleasant diversion during aweek filled with rigorous four o’clock exams. In all, over athousand dollars was raised on the evening. The spring 2007 Breakfast for a Buck event was trulyspecial. The event was held on April 11th and raisedmoney for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Non-Hodgkin’sLymphoma in support of the family of a former Lehighstudent-athlete and C.O.A.C.H. participant. Over 1,000 peopleattended the spring late night breakfast and contributed to thealmost $20,000 raised, Breakfast for a Buck’s largest amountever.“I feel our student athletes with the support of the Lehighcommunity worked very hard to make Breakfast for a Buckanother successful event,” Roseann Corsi, Lehigh’s PublicRelations Coordinator said. “By working together, the rewardwas knowing that we have helped a great cause.”Lehigh student-athletes also took the opportunity to giveback to the community by hosting the C.O.A.C.H. program’sannual Adopt-A-Family event. For this program, each athleticteam at Lehigh adopted an underprivileged family from theBethlehem community. Each family had a holiday wish listwhich our student-athletes made come true. The teams raisedmoney throughout the fall semester in order to purchase giftsfor their family. Many of the wish lists included necessitiessuch as beds, toiletries, clothes and money for food. Inaddition to these essentials the student-athletes were able tomake holiday wishes come true by purchasing gifts such astelevisions, bicycles, and toys for their families.A reception was held so that the teams could meet theirfamilies, present them with their gifts, and share in a trulymagical evening. Food and drinks were provided to make theevening special for all parties involved and Santa Claus wason hand to spread holiday cheer, along with Jolly Holly theClown and Lehigh’s own mascot the Mountain Hawk. Theevent took on a Christmas Eve-type atmosphere when the childrenwere allowed to open a few special gifts with their team.“We spend so much time training throughout the year, thatsometimes we lose sight of the important things,” said ColinMistele ‘07, a member of the men’s lacrosse team. “The holidaysare an important time for so many people, that if we canput the time and effort in with our teammates, we can make a

ATHLETICSlot of people’s holidays better. It really means a lot to all of usto be able to help out in anyway we can.”The Adopt-A-Family program is now in its ninth year. Byparticipating in community outreach programs, like Adopt-A-Family, many Lehigh student-athletes are doing their best tomake a difference in the community around them.In all, the group accounted for over 500 hours of communityservice in the Lehigh Valley, coordinated over 22 events, andis responsible for thousands of smiles on the faces of the specialpeople of our community. ATHLETICSAdvancement for the FutureJoe Sterrett ‘76The summer of 2007 will be one that I always remember asfilled with purposeful and promising organizational changewithin our Lehigh Athletics Department. As the semesterbegan, we had 10 new full-time staff members (with one morevacancy to be resolved), 2 staff with new assignments, and4 staff that have been promoted. This totaled 17 significantpersonnel moves that occurred over the summer, not includingthe implications for other full-time staff or the new graduateassistant and part-time staff members that came aboard.Indeed, it was a busy summer! The first steps that have been taken as a result of thisclarity about our financial model were steps that enhance ourcapacity to focus on revenue enhancement in several revenueproducing areas. Specifically, the following organizationaladjustments took place this summer:1. We added a full-time staff member to our externalevents/facilities management team (Kristy Miles) and wepromoted Jason Gall in order to provide more support forthe revenue generating potential in this area. In Jason’s case,he will be responsible for our golf practice complex and therevenue opportunities it provides us.2. We reorganized our equipment and laundry operations, adding formally the responsibilities for our athletics merchandisinginitiatives as well as the concessions operations. Anew position, filled by Meghan Gove ‘06, was created tomanage athletics merchandising and concessions, and theposition descriptions of Kim Miller ‘96 and Tyler Osler weremodified to align with the expanding focus of this area.3. The ticket operation was relieved of the burden ofmanaging concessions in order to focus full attentions onenhancing ticket sales. A corollary objective for this year isto achieve a much better understanding of the constituencythat attends our events so that we can begin to appropriatelytailor our promotional, merchandising, and event experienceefforts. Special attention will be given to student attendanceand spirit initiatives.4. Our summer camps operations will be enhanced in someway by some augmentation of staffing support. This commitment, which has yet to be finalized, will provide appropriatestaffing support for an enterprise that is nearly a $1 milliongross revenues operation, and it will enable us to apply JulieOltman’s considerable talents with systems and technologyto several of our key “business” activities in the department. As we seek to grow our revenues we have to be efficient andcompliant in all that we do and Julie has the ability to contributesubstantially to this obligation.5. The expansion of our administrative staff also includesthe addition of Chris Wakely. Chris will assume a role wherehe will oversee and help evaluate our recruiting operationsand effectiveness, while providing support to our headcoaches in this vital area. Additionally, Chris will take onsome of the very time consuming reporting and informationmanagement responsibilities that have previously beenhandled by Karen Adams or myself, thereby freeing us to usethat time for other purposes. He will also apply his 16 yearsof coaching experience to provide administrative support forseveral programs and to the orientation and mentoring of allnew head coaches.6. The non-varsity dimensions of our athletics programmingare less visible than the varsity programs yet they serve alarger population and have the potential to enrich the studentexperience in deeply meaningful and life-long ways. Nonvarsityprogramming is an important but comparativelyundeveloped priority within our strategic plan, primarilybecause we have not allocated the kind of resource support(staff or program dollars) that are necessary. Given therealities of financial self-reliance, it became critical for us tofind a way to expand resource support for our non-varsityprograms. Accordingly, Barb Turanchik ‘75 has moved to arole where she will direct our club sports program and alsoinitiate some revenue generating and fund raising initiativesfor the broad non-varsity program areas (intramural sports, club sports, recreation, fitness, and instructional programming). This move allows us to reorganize the duties of JaneJosephson and Doug Strange so that each can devote moreattention to priority initiatives. Barb’s successful experiencewith our Athletics Partnership program will serve well thenon-varsity programming that involves more than 3000student participants.7. The decision to address our non-varsity sport area byadding staffing and adopting a revenue generating strategyobviously created a major void in the critical area of ourAthletics Partnership program. Less obvious but no lessimportant is the absence of the kind of organizational structurethat would provide additional leadership, coordination, mentoring, and creativity for our revenue generating units.Additionally, a different organizational structure will enhancethe development of marketing, communications, imaging, and media plans that are cohesive, effective, and supportiveof our resource intentions. These voids will be more thanfilled by a distinctively qualified individual. A fortuitousset of circumstances and timing presented the opportunityfor alumnus, Athletics Hall of Fame member, former alumnichair of our Athletics Partnership program, former presidentof the Lehigh Alumni Association, and former AlumniTrustee, Bill Griffin ’79 to join our staff as Associate Directorfor External Relations and Advancement. Bill will bring toour department his 28 year business career in sales, marketing, and business development and his many years of directand influential alumni service. He will provide leadershipand coordination for most of our revenue generating opera-

Staffing UpdatesATHLETICStions and will direct our Athletics Partnership program. Billwill also help Karen Adams and me to oversee and providesupport for our head coaching staff.8. Senior Associate Director Karen Adams will continue tolead the department in our day-to-day, week-to-week, monthto-month,and in our annual operations. Her distinctiveabilities to promote quality planning, evaluation, andaccountability have resulted in exceptional financial managementof available resources, and wise counsel for many of ourvarsity programs. Karen will continue to lead the internaloperations of the department; she will monitor our overalloperating effectiveness; and she will continue to provideoversight and support for a number of program managersand head coaches.I have work yet to do in all of these areas, but the “summerof 2007” has been one of significant progress and leaves uspoised to do some exciting things in the year ahead.Cassese NamedHead Coachof Men’s LacrosseprogramFollowing an extensive nationalsearch, Lehigh has named formerDuke assistant coach Kevin Casseseto the newly endowed Smith Family(Daniel E. I am excitedfor the entire Lehigh Lacrosse family as I am profoundlyconfident that Lehigh University has selected the rightindividual, at the right time, to lead the excellent young menof the men’s lacrosse program.”A native of Port Jefferson Station, New York and graduateof Comsewogue High School, Cassese earned his bachelorsdegree in sociology from Duke in 2003, garnering USILAScholar All-American and ACC Academic Honor Roll honorsas well as the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan HonoraryAward for outstanding athletic and academic achievement.Cassese and his wife, the former Katie Granson whoattended nearby Freedom High School, were recently marriedin Bethlehem in December of 2006.

I havemet the team and have found them to be a classy and resilientgroup of athletes. Facility UpdateATHLETICSMark WogenrichThe Morning Call, originally appeared in the July 19, 2006 edition.BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Construction is nearly complete on a golf practice complex on the Goodman Campus thatwill house driving, putting and chipping ranges as well as a clubhouse. The idea was a brainchild of Lehigh’s ILE(Integrated Learning Experience) project, which consisted of a group of students ranging anywhere from financeand accounting to civil engineering and architecture majors, whose assignment was to finalize a business plan forthe practice complex.Lehigh’s new project will cover approximately 75 acres of leased farmland that straddles Bethlehem and LowerSaucon Township on the Goodman campus. The facility, which is not being marketed to the public, will featuretwo practice greens (one for putting, one for chipping and bunker shots) and a driving range overlooking GoodmanStadium and Stabler Arena.Lehigh’s men’s and women’s golf teams will benefit from the range, which will give them a designated place topractice. The teams play rounds at Saucon Valley Country Club but use ranges at Center Valley, Wedgewood orBethlehem Municipal. In addition, students, faculty and Lehigh alumni will be able to use the facility.Sterrett and economics professor Vincent Munley last year convened a team of engineering, architecture, businessand journalism majors to market-test the golf project on campus and design the facility. With an endowmentfrom an anonymous donor (a Lehigh graduate), the golf facility is scheduled to be built without money from theschool’s athletic budget. Sterrett hopes the project will be self-operating and won’t require university investment.‘’We didn’t want to be in the golf course business,’’ Sterrett said, ‘’but we are in the education business. To have aplace where people can learn to play the game will be enormously valuable to a community like this.’’This is the second project on the Goodman Campus that Lehigh’s ILE program has designed, with the Ronald J.Ulrich Sports Complex, a soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facility with lighted grass and astro turf surfaces, whichwas completed in the summer of 2001.

ATHLETICSAthletics PartnershipFrom Bill Griffin ‘79Associate Director of AthleticsExternal Relations & AdvancementDear Friends,What a joy it is to be back on campus! Walking the halls of Taylor Gym bringsback countless memories, particularly of the many wonderful people whohelped shape so many of us...people like: Bill Leckonby, John Steckbeck, Barb Lipkin, Thad Turner,John Whitehead, Judy Turner-Baxter, Brian Hill and John Covert...and many other Lehigh legends. It’samazing how much these people gave of themselves so that we would learn the lessons of life throughcompetitive sport...and enjoy doing it!What is most gratifying, of course, is that their work continues...but today it occurs through Joe Sterrett,Greg Strobel, Andy Coen, Sue Troyan, Dean Koski, and so many others. These are our coaches of today...terrific teachers and role models, fierce competitors, and tremendous people.Just as inspiring is how hard our current student-athletes are working to be champions for Lehigh...to bethe next Mike Caruso, the next Kim McQuilken, the next Nancy Barrett-Kreider, the next Paul Hartzell, thenext Daren Queenan.Naturally, as members of the Lehigh Athletics family, we want them to be encouraged, supported, andcelebrated. Most of all, we want them to be successful. That’s why we formed the Lehigh AthleticsPartnership over 17 years ago. The Lehigh Athletics Partnership is the connecting body that keeps ourAthletics family together. It is the vehicle by which life-long relationships are born, nurtured, andmaintained. And those relationships cross and connect a broad spectrum of groups...fans of LehighAthletics, our coaches, today’s student-athletes, our former student-athletes across the generations, parents of current and former student-athletes, Lehigh faculty & staff, our corporate sponsors, etc.As we proceed with the 2007–2008 academic year, we are focused on a few important initiatives:1. Enhancing communications with our Athletics family members2. Ensuring connections between Lehigh student-athletes of the past and those who compete forus today3. Building our Partnership team with volunteers who are willing to act as catalysts for‘connection’ opportunities and eventsI am thrilled to be in a position to re-engage with all of you. Together, we have the opportunity to liftLehigh Athletics to new levels of competitiveness and consistent success. I am excited about therelationships we will build and maintain and how these relationships will benefit the kids and coacheswho wear Brown and White so proudly today.Sincerely,Bill Griffin ‘79Associate Director of AthleticsExternal Relations & Advancement
