O’Reillyand Verdi become just the ninth and tenth All-Americans in<strong>Lehigh</strong>’s history and the first since Evan Bruno ‘02 (pictured,middle) garnered the accolade in 2001. O’Reilly was named aFirst-Team selection, while Verdi was honored as a Third-Teamselection. <strong>Lehigh</strong> is one of just six schools in the nation to havetwo players selected, joining Maryland, Notre Dame, SMU, UCSanta Barbara and West Virginia.O’Reilly and Verdi become just the third and fourth All-Americans at <strong>Lehigh</strong> since 1947. On the offensive side of the ball, O’Reilly scoredsix times—four of which were off dead balls with his other tworesulting off dead ball situations. The Arlington, Mass. nativealso had the winning shootout attempt against Rhode Island inthe second round of the NCAA Tournament to send theMountain Hawks into the sweet sixteen of the tournament.Verdi served as the team’s other center back, partnering withO’Reilly to make it tough for the opponent’s to penetrate the<strong>Lehigh</strong> defensive zone by going down the middle of the field.Offensively, Verdi tallied a career high three goals and one assist.He was named two times to national teams of the week—once by College Soccer News and once by SoccerAmerica.com.The Ivyland, Pa. native earned his second All-League selectionby being named to the First-Team.Marquis Hall garnersRookie of the YearawardMarquis Hall ‘10 was named the 20<strong>07</strong>Patriot League Rookie of the Year lastyear to become <strong>Lehigh</strong>’s first-everRookie of the Year. Hall scored in double figures 16 times,including ten times in league play, and led the MountainHawks in assists 23 times and in steals 12 times. DuringPatriot League play, Hall averaged 13.9 points per game, whileshooting 45 percent from the field and 43 percent from threepointrange. The business major who also garnered freshmanmid-major All-American accolades netted a career-high 24points in a victory over archrival Lafayette on January 20. Forthe season, Hall’s 339 points place him in third place all-timefor freshman scoring in school annals.Steve Suarez honoredas Co-Rookie of the Yearfor Men’s GolfSteve Suarez ‘10 was honored as the20<strong>07</strong> Patriot League Co-Rookie of theYear in 20<strong>07</strong> while collecting an honorablemention accolade from the PatriotLeague for his play in the month of April.Suarez led the Mountain Hawks in everymatch they played in during April butone, including the 20<strong>07</strong> Patriot LeagueChampionships as the freshman shot a220, good for a fourth-place tie overall.Suarez began the month shooting an 81at the Navy Spring Invite, as he finishedin a tie for 80th place, playing with thelikes of St. Bonaventure, Penn, SetonHall and Delaware. ATHLETICStain Hawks to the team crown at the Lafayette Invitational.<strong>Lehigh</strong> defeated teams such as LIU, Monmouth, Manhattan,Lafayette and Hofstra to claim the title.Suarez captured individual medalist honors at the <strong>Lehigh</strong>Valley Invite on April 18, shooting a 71 as <strong>Lehigh</strong> again wonthe team championship, defeating local rivals Lafayette,Muhlenberg and Moravian. At the Patriot League ChampionshipsSuarez shot individual rounds of 75, 72, and 73 to finishin a tie for fourth and claim the league’s Rookie of the Yearhonor. He is <strong>Lehigh</strong>’s first-ever Rookie of the Year honoree.Kate Marvel and Lisa Sweeneyhonored as Pitcher and Playerof the Year<strong>Lehigh</strong> softball players Kate Marvel ‘08and Lisa Sweeney ‘09 were named thePatriot League’s Player and Pitcher ofthe Year, respectively, for 20<strong>07</strong> whilebeing recognized on the ECAC DivisionI softball All-Star team. Marveland Sweeney were among the 12student-athletes named to the teamand both played significant roles in aseason that saw the Mountain Hawkswin 35 games and capture their ninthstraight Patriot League regular seasontitle.The Mountain Hawks’ leadoffhitter and starting center fielder,Marvel put together a stellar juniorseason en route to earning first teamAll-Patriot League honors for the thirdstraight year. Marvel was later namedthe league’s Player of the Year andfirst team NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team performer for the secondstraight year. The Manasquan, N.J.native was the Patriot League’sleading hitter, with a .415 average.Marvel also led the league in runsscored (37), triples (8) and tied for theleague lead with 61 base hits.Sweeney parlayed her secondstraight Patriot League Pitcher of theYear Award into her second consecutivefirst team All-Region nod, andnow adds ECAC All-Star to the list ofhonors. In her sophomore campaign,Sweeney led the Patriot League with19 victories and a 1.47 earned run average. The Lumberton,N.J. native also led the league in saves and opponents battingaverage, while her 155 strikeouts were one off the league lead.Sweeney also threw five shutouts in 20<strong>07</strong>, including no-hittersversus Harvard and Penn; the third and fourth no-hitters ofher career.Inneka Carmola votedPatriot LeagueRookie of the YearInneke Carmola ‘10 was named thePatriot League Rookie of the Year forthe spring of 20<strong>07</strong> in women’s lacrosse.After leading <strong>Lehigh</strong> to a second placeregular season finish in the league.For the second consecutive season, aMountain Hawk was named the PatriotLeague Rookie of the Year, as Carmolafollows Sara MacIntyre’s honor of a yearago. She becomes the fourth <strong>Lehigh</strong>player to earn Rookie of the Year honors,joining MacIntrye ‘09, Kristin Gillis(1992), and Jill Altshuler (1993).Carmola was also named a First-TeamAll-League selection, scoring 44 goalsduring the regular season, and morethan one on 12 occasions, including acareer-best seven in a league victoryover Colgate. Carmola led the Brown and White in points,goals, shots, game-winning goals and she led the PatriotLeague in free-position goals.Kaitlin Grimm grabsPatriot League Rookieof the Year awardIn just one season of racing in theBrown and White, Kaitlin Grimm ‘10has already earned a spot in <strong>Lehigh</strong>history as she became the first-everMountain Hawk to be named thePatriot League’s Rookie of the Year.Grimm has been a top runner for theMountain Hawk women, being justone of two freshmen to compete inall five varsity races for the Brownand White.Grimm started her collegiatecareer with a fifth place finish atthe <strong>Lehigh</strong> Valley Championshipswhere she ran a season-best 23:10.In the four regular season meets,the Pittsburgh native ran sub 24:00,including a 23:26.6 at the ArkansasChile Pepper Festival and a 23:36 inthe Paul Short Collegiate Meet—bothraces where the Mountain Hawkscompeted against nationally rankedcompetition.Athletic Success
