The OcTOber ISSue of Trenchless
International is the final of the 2010. When
this issue arrives, many of you will be off
to Singapore to participate in the 28th
Annual International No-Dig Conference
and Exhibition. And what an event it promises
to be.
The Singapore No-Dig is shaping up
to exceed the goals we set for it. Early
registrations are above plan, as are
exhibit space commitments. Attendees
from every part of the world complement
the strong showing of participants from
Singapore, Malaysia, China and other
countries in the region. We will end the
year on a high note.
Indeed 2010 has been a very successful
year for the international
trenchless community.
In 2010, we will have added four new
Affiliated Societies, significantly broadening
the education and training reach of
our Society. The first to join in 2010 was
the Colombia Society (CSITT). Shortly
after joining ISTT, CSITT hosted its first
No-Dig in Cartagena on 3–4 June. ISTT
Vice Chairman Samuel Ariaratnam and I
were delighted to participate in this inaugural
event.
In September, Yasin Torun, Chairman,
and Ahmet Gulec, Vice Chairman of the
Turkish Society (TSITT) travelled to London
to sign an affiliation agreement with ISTT.
The Turkish trenchless society believes
that the demand for trenchless methods in
their region of the world is huge.
The China Society (CSTT) and the
Singapore Society (SgSTT) are set to join
ISTT officially at the Singapore No-Dig
conference. The addition of these two
societies, in a very dynamic region, is a
real plus for trenchless. All told, ISTT will
welcome the New Year with 26 Affiliated
Societies as members of the global
trenchless community.
The ISTT Board of Directors will meet
in Singapore to map out future directions
of ISTT. This meeting marks a milestone
as we welcome Sam Ariaratnam as
Chairman, replacing Dec Downey who
has completed his three-year term as
Chair. Derek Choi will become the new
Vice Chairman.
ISTT also will elect new members to
the Executive Subcommittee – the
management team of ISTT. Dec will
remain active with ISTT in his capacity
of Immediate Past Chairman. Under
Dec’s leadership, ISTT added new members,
hosted and co-hosted successful
No-Digs and regional training seminars,
and restored the financial health of the
Society. The new leadership will doubtlessly
wish to build on the successes of
the past few years, while at the same
time expand the efforts of ISTT in support
of Affiliated Society programs and
worldwide growth in the application of
Trenchless Technology. I am sure Sam
Ariaratnam will have more to say about the
future direction of ISTT in his Chairman’s
report in the January 2011 issue of
Trenchless Technology.
The No-Dig schedule institutes a goal
of ISTT championed by Sam Ariaratnam
to keep the event fresh and exciting by
rotating the venue geographically among
Europe, the Americas and Asia. The 2011
No-Dig, hosted by the German Society
(GSTT), will be held in Berlin, 2–5 May. It
is hard not to be excited about the Berlin
2011 No-Dig, which will be held in conjunction
with the well regarded Wasser
Berlin show. GSTT has begun accepting
proposals for papers for presentation at
the conference. Based on quality of these
abstracts, we have reason to believe that
the 2011 No-Dig conference will be of the
highest technical quality. The combination
of a strong technical conference in concert
with Wasser Berlin makes the 2011
No-Dig a “must attend” conference for
our industry.
The Brazilian Society (ABRATT) will host
the 2012 No-Dig. The 2012 No-Dig will
be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in mid-May.
The Sao Paulo No-Dig will mark the first
International No-Dig to be held in South
America. The venue for the 2013 No-Dig
has not yet been determined. However,
in keeping with ISTT’s policy of rotating
No-Dig geographically, we anticipate
this No-Dig will take place in Asia or the
Pacific Rim.
ISTT has had a banner year – a highly
successful No-Dig, and a growing and
diverse membership base – and the future
looks equally bright.
