engraved illustrations on twelve plates; a little dust-soiled, but overall a<br />

clean copy; contemporary pink pattern cloth; extremities rubbed, foot<br />

of spine chipped and corners rounded.<br />

First and only edition of a charming bi-lingual German-French alphabet<br />

of trades and professions. First the alphabet is introduced, black letter,<br />

Roman, italics, followed by a handy introduction to reading and writing,<br />

introducing vowels and consonants, and then words with increasing<br />

numbers of syllables, with information on spelling. An alphabet of trades<br />

and professions is given (following the French terms) and illustrated on<br />

the charming hand-coloured engraved plates. The professions are identified<br />

and explained on facing pages in French and German. Not all of them are<br />

necessarily ‘desirable professions’ for children to aspire to, and include a<br />

magician performing the three cup magic trick, and a usurer, in addition to<br />

more common professions, such as printer, baker, painter, grape harvester<br />

and vinegar merchant.<br />

Oblong 8vo, (92 x 114 mm), pp. [viii] including frontispiece, coloured<br />

title, 96, and six hand-coloured woodcuts; original printed yellow<br />

boards, rebacked.<br />

Charming children’s guide to arts and sciences, covering in brief paragraphs<br />

all aspects of knowledge. Text illustrations include charts for drawing in<br />

proportion, printed music, and many definitions of arts and trades. The<br />

second half is taken up by an introduction to colour, information on simple<br />

and composite colours, some of which are illustrated on the title.<br />

The coloured plates, including the title, surrounded by fourteen<br />

colour samples, illustrate painter, sculptor, engraver, copperplate printer,<br />

letterpress printer, and finally book-binder.<br />
