possible. For the first f<strong>in</strong>ancial year of use, depreciation for 12<br />

months is allowed, if the asset has been <strong>in</strong> use for more than 6<br />

months throughout the respective f<strong>in</strong>ancial year. Otherwise,<br />

half the annual rate is deductible. Except for build<strong>in</strong>gs (50, 40<br />

or 33 years) a goodwill (15 years) and passenger cars (8<br />

years), depreciation rates are not fixed by <strong>Austria</strong>n tax law.<br />

• Other deductible expenses:<br />

- Depreciable movable assets with a price not exceed<strong>in</strong>g €<br />

400 can be fully expensed <strong>in</strong> the year of acquisition or<br />

production.<br />

- Repair and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance payments are tax deductible <strong>in</strong><br />

the period <strong>in</strong>curred. Repairs that lead, <strong>in</strong> effect, to a new<br />

asset must be capitalized as such.<br />

Lodgement of Returns<br />

Taxpayers are required to lodge returns annually. The due date for the<br />

fil<strong>in</strong>g of tax returns is March 31 st of the subsequent calendar year<br />

irrespective of the f<strong>in</strong>ancial year-end. Taxpayers represented by a tax<br />

adviser may file their tax returns with the tax office by April 30 (at the<br />

latest) of the second subsequent calendar year.<br />

Payment of Tax<br />

Prepayments of corporate or <strong>in</strong>come tax have to be made <strong>in</strong> four<br />

equal <strong>in</strong>stalments each year <strong>in</strong> accordance with the assessment<br />

notice issued by the tax authorities. The prepayment is generally<br />

based on the prior year’s tax payments, whereas a reduction of the<br />

prepayments may be granted upon application. The prepayments<br />

fixed for the assessment period and any amounts collected by<br />

withhold<strong>in</strong>g are credited aga<strong>in</strong>st the f<strong>in</strong>al corporate or <strong>in</strong>come tax<br />

liability.<br />
