Conditions for a residence permit<br />

The application for the <strong>in</strong>itial permit must be filed personally before<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g at the <strong>Austria</strong>n Embassy abroad. For citizens of a country<br />

whose nationals do not require a visa to enter <strong>Austria</strong> the application<br />

can be filed dur<strong>in</strong>g their legal residence <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong>.<br />

A residence permit may be issued only if sufficient means are<br />

available. This is the case if the funds reach at least the same height<br />

as the so-called "Ausgleichszulagenrichtsatz”.<br />

The health <strong>in</strong>surance must cover "all risks". The choice of health<br />

<strong>in</strong>surance is up to the applicant. Moreover the applicant has to provide<br />

evidence that they are entitled to an adequate accommodation. In<br />

practice, a tenant or sub-lease contract serves as proof. If the planned<br />

stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong> exceeds one year applicants need to undertake a<br />

language course.<br />
