rural railway travel as it used to be all
those years ago, as well as a boat trip
on the River Tees to Yarm.
Monday We depart and make our way north to
arrive at the Sporting Lodge Hotel where we enjoy
next 4 nights stay with dinner, bed and breakfast.
TuesdayToday we visit Thirsk, home of James
Herriot, and a chance to visit the acclaimed World
of James Herriot Centre. Afterwards we take in a
piece of history as we ride on the ‘Wensleydale
Railway’, newly opened after sleeping for over
fifty years. Later we end the day with a visit to
Richmond, high above the River Swale.
Wednesday Our first visit of the day takes us
to Stockton-on-Tees to where the Northern
Hemisphere’s only full-size replica of the worldrenowned
HM Bark Endeavour lays at berth in the
quayside. Making our way through the historic
Castlegate quayside complete with street traders
and sailors of the period we board the Endeavour
for a fascinating insight into what life at sea was
like in the 18th Century. We then join the ‘Teesside
Princess’ to take a gentle cruise up the River Tees
through beautiful countryside to the cobbled town
of Yarm, famous for its location on the River and
the awe inspiring railway viaduct. In the afternoon
we drive through Bilsdale - “Little Switzerland”, and
past the Sun Inn, which has had the same landlord
for 200 years!
Thursday After breakfast we travel over the moors,
across Blakey Ridge, through picturesque Hutton-le-
Hole to Pickering, where we join the North Yorkshire
Moors Railway for a steam train journey through
rugged moorland to Whitby – passing through
Goathland (‘Aidensfield’ in TV’s ‘Heartbeat’) on
the way. Whitby is a maritime town, fishing port
and seafarer’s haven, bursting with character and
quite unique – little has changed since the times of
Captain James Cook.
Friday After breakfast we leave and begin our
homeward journey.
