Your continued support and generosity is greatly
appreciated and needed!
From Father
Bob….
I wish to clarify and apologize for some
wording that was too broad in my homily last
weekend—Respect Life weekend.
It was my intention to highlight the importance
of the teachings of our faith as Catholics,
as we make crucial choices about life
and death issues.
In using the word “politicians”, I meant
only to refer to that segment of our lawmakers
who disregard our beliefs as Catholic
people of faith about these essential issues.
However, my over-simplified use of the
word “politicians” was too inclusive. I did
not wish to denigrate our mayor, council people,
and others, who truly make Carol
Stream, and our larger community, a very
special place to live.
Once again, it was not my intention to
speak of Carol Stream officials, and I truly
am sorry if the generality of my remarks
offended anyone.
Peace and prayers,
Words of Life
“The subtle lies of today’s culture of death are a
plague of spiritual leprosy, reducing the value of human
persons to some arbitrary standard that changes
like fashions...To the world around us, what matters is
what we possess, but to the Lord, we matter, because
we are His beloved children, created in His image, for
whom He died, and with whom He wants to live forever
in heaven.”
~~ Rev. John Bartunek, LC, STL, from
“Why You Matter: A Reflection on Human Dignity”

Parking Lot Repairs Completed
You may have noticed that the parish parking
lot has recently undergone major repairs resealing
and re-striping.
1. It has been four years since we last re-sealed
and re-striped the parish parking lot, even
though we do crack-filling every year.
2. Your driveway maintenance may have cost you
$75 - $100. It costs quite a bit more for ours.
3. After review of multiple competitive bids, the
work was completed just prior to religious
education classes beginning at a cost of
$13,513.00.
4. It is important for us to properly maintain our
130,000 square foot parking lot because the
replacement costs would amount to
$400,000.00!!!!!
Thanks for your continued
support of our Building and
Maintenance Fund collections.
Life Line Screening at Corpus Christi
Catholic Church
We will be hosting a community preventive health
screening on Thursday, November 12, 2009. Life
Line Screening will be offering ultrasound screenings
for the prevention of stroke and vascular
disease.
Life Line Screening includes an ultrasound of the carotid
arteries in the neck to determine if you are at risk
for stroke. The majority of strokes are linked to
blockage caused by the buildup of plaque in the
carotid arteries. A new screening is now available
to detect atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart
rhythm that is linked to up to 20% of strokes. A
screening of the arteries of the legs is offered to
check for peripheral arterial disease, which is the
leading cause of diabetic amputations and an indicator
of heart disease. Lastly, a test is performed
to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms. All results
are reviewed by a board certified vascular surgeon
and sent directly to you with all the information
you need to take to your own personal physician
for any needed follow up.
These screenings are non-invasive, painless and
affordable; the Stroke, Vascular Disease and
Heart Rhythm Package (4 tests) is only $139. Also,
a finger stick blood package including cholesterol,
triglycerides, HDL/LDL, and glucose is available
for an additional $50 with that package. Osteoporosis-$10
additional with ultrasound package.
PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!!
Appointment times begin at 9:00 a.m. and fill quickly.
Please call Life Line Screening directly at this
phone number 1-800-324-1851 for your appoint-
ment or for more information.
MOST AMERICANS WANT
HEALTH CARE REFORM,
OPPOSE ABORTION COVERAGE,
SUPPORT CONSCIENCE
PROTECTION LAWS
WASHINGTON—A nationwide survey commissioned
by the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB) has found widespread public opposition
to including abortion in health care reform
and majority support for conscience rights
protection – views shared by those who favor efforts
to pass health care reform.
Conducted by International Communications
Research (ICR) from September 16-20, 2009, the phone
survey of 1,043 U.S. adults found that 60 percent favor –
and only thirty percent oppose – “efforts to pass
health care reform to provide affordable health insurance
for all.” Focusing on that sixty percent, the survey
found that:
Sixty percent of those favoring reform oppose –
and only 25 percent support – “measures that would
require people to pay for abortion coverage with their
federal taxes.”
By a 49-39 percent plurality, those who favor reform
oppose “measures that would require people to
pay for abortion coverage with their health insurance
premiums”; and
Among those favoring reform, those who favor maintaining
“current federal laws that protect doctors and
nurses from being forced to perform or refer for abortions
against their will” outnumber those who oppose
keeping such laws in place by a margin of two to one
(60-30).
Opposition to abortion coverage was somewhat
stronger in the total sample of U.S. adults – for example,
67 percent of the total sample opposed requiring
people to pay for abortion coverage through their
taxes and 56 percent opposed making them do so
through their insurance premiums.
The survey also asked: “If the choice were up to
you, would you want your own insurance policy to include
abortion?” Sixty-eight percent of U.S. adults
said ‘No’ and only 24 percent said ‘Yes.’
“The USCCB survey confirms other recent polls
conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (August 30-
September 1) and Rasmussen Reports (September 14-15)
on health care policy and abortion,” said Deirdre
McQuade, Assistant Director for Policy & Communications
at the USCCB’s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities.
“With each passing week it gets clearer: The American
public generally does not want to pay for abortion
coverage and does not want health care reform used to
promote abortion,” she said.
“Abortion is not health care. The bishops of
the United States are working hard to ensure that
health care reform serves the most vulnerable among
us – especially the poor, immigrants, and the unborn,”
McQuade said.
For more information on the U.S. bishops’ position on
health care reform, visit www.usccb.org/healthcare.

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25TH
ADOPT-A-PRIEST PROGRAM
With the concurrence and encouragement of Bishop Peter Sartain, the
Serra Club has established the Adopt-A-Priest program for diocesan
and religious priests in the diocese of Joliet. The purpose of Adopt-A-
Priest is to insure that all our active and retired priests know that they
are supported with prayer by Serrans and others.
The method of adoption is a lapel pin with a Roman collar
against a black background with wording at the top “Serra for Vocations”
and at the bottom “Adopt-A-Priest”. Each pin is unique with
inscription on the back of the pin which includes the adopted priest’s
initials and year of ordination.
The adopter is provided with the pin to wear. They are also
provided with an introductory card with the name of the adopted priest
along and a mailing envelope to mail to the priest. The card will also
indicate the name of the adopted priest.
We encourage all of our readers and friends to Adopt-A-
Priest today.
To Adopt-A-Priest mail a check for $10 payable to Serra
Club of DuPage County. You may adopt more than one priest. To
insure that all priests are adopted, names will be assigned randomly.
Mail to Joanne Carr, 320 Browning Court, Wheaton, IL 60189. Net
proceeds will go for the education of Seminarians.
ADVISING A PRIEST THAT YOU HAVE ADOPTED
HIM
Your editor participated in the Adopt-A-Priest program
by making a monetary contribution in early August. The priest,
whose name that I was randomly provided was Fr. Adam
Bobola, S. Ch. (Society of Christ in America), pastor of Divine
Mercy Polish Mission located at 21W411 Sunset Avenue,
Lombard.
Since I had not met Fr. Adam, I wanted to make an
effort to meet the priest that I was adopting. On September 15, I
found him in his office around the noon hour busy working at
reducing the pile of papers and bills on his desk which all
priests enjoy doing…not!
He was very gracious with his time and offered information
about the 3 homes adjacent to the church, which have
been converted into the provincial’s home/offices, the parish
rectory and a parish office/meeting facility. The provincial is
responsible for the United States and Canada. They have two
priests serving at parishes in Joliet and several in the Chicago
diocese as well as at other parishes throughout North America.
I provided Fr. Adam with a copy of the Serra News, and
he took a time to read the article about the Adopt-A-Priest program.
I then explained to him that I had randomly selected his
name and that I would be wearing the pin with his initials and
date of ordination and that I would be praying for him. He was
grateful and expressed his appreciation. I left, happy to have
met one more of all the good priests of our diocese.
I know that my wife Carolyn who was very proud of her polish
heritage and who passed away in March would be very happy
that the priest I adopted was born in Poland.
