Working with the
Scriptures
April 20, 2008 (John 14:1-12)
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do
the works that I do, and will
do greater ones than these…”.
What are these ‘works’ that
Jesus is talking about? How
can we know Him?
“Peace be with you.” Barry
and Kevin were architects with
very different ideas of how the
project they were working on
should be handled. For the
people involved in the meeting
it was uncomfortable, even
embarrassing. So when
Eleanor came up with a third
idea for completing the project,
one that both men could buy
into, they all breathed a sigh of
relief. Because Eleanor had
listened closely to what each
man was saying rather than
taking one side over the other
she was able to bring about a
peaceful solution that allowed
both men to save face.
“Do not be afraid.” Jenny was
nine. Her teeth were coming
in crooked and the dentist was
going to have to pull two baby
teeth so that her permanent
teeth would have the space to
develop properly. Jenny was
terrified. “Look at Mickey!”
the doctor said, directing the
child’s attention to the cartoons
on the ceiling and away from
the waiting tray of
instruments.
“Your faith has healed you.”
The doctor saw the cross Beth’s
mother was wearing and asked
about it. Beth was surprised,
since most of the doctors her
mother had seen had been far
too busy to sit and talk with an
old lady, especially about
religion. Because of his respect
for her faith in God Beth’s
mother had faith in her doctor
as well, and her physical
condition quickly improved.
Beginning with Genesis,
people of faith have wondered
what God looks like. And the
disciples were certainly no
exception. “Master, show us
the Father.” “If you know me,
then you will also know my
Father.” We know Jesus as
bearer of peace, as comforter
and as healer. “Whoever has
seen me has seen the Father.”
So what does the Father look
like? Perhaps he looks like an
architect – or a dentist – or a
doctor who takes the time to
listen to an old lady’s
concerns…
What is Mystagogy….
In the fifty days of the Easter
season that follow the celebration
of Our Lord’s resurrection, our
recently confirmed adults begin a
journey of mystagogy. It is a time
to continue the interpretation of
the mystery of their faith and
relationship with Christ. But, this
period is not only for them…it is
for all of us as well!
For all Christian believers, mystagogy means a
continued discernment of the Spirit. It could take place
during communal and personal prayer, theological
reflection, spiritual direction, or retreat. Mystagogy
assists all of us to encounter the risen Christ in the
liturgy, the Scriptures, the Church and in our everyday
lives.
Mystagogy is a process of conscious communal
teaching and reflection that takes place within the
Church, which is itself a place for forgiveness and
healing.
As we all continue on our life long journey of
mystagogy here some questions for each of us to
ponder…
How do I experience the Resurrection of Jesus
Christ in my own life?
How can mystagogy bring to life the mystery of
Christ in the Church for me?
How has the Spirit lead you and challenged you
to a deeper faith and life of devotion?
Peace,
Deacon Tom
“the interpretation of mystery”
What is the Peace and Social
Justice Ministry?
Our Catholic teaching calls us to serve those in need and to
change the structures that deny people their dignity and rights
as children of God. The act of seeking justice works
hand-in-hand with acts of charity. In addition, taking action to
gain justice for those in need is a complementary component of
serving those in need.
The Peace and Social Justice ministry of Corpus Christi parish
will work in a number of ways:
• We will share the social
teaching of the Catholic
Church with all parishioners.
• We will apply Catholic social
teaching to major
contemporary domestic and
international issues which
have significant moral and
religious dimensions.
• We will advocate for the poor
and vulnerable and for
genuine justice and peace in
the public policy arena.
We will work to defend human
life, human dignity, human rights and the pursuit of justice and
peace in our community, in our state, in our nation, and in our
world.
What are the Core Values of Catholic
Peace and Social Justice Teaching?
As Catholics:
• We believe in the life and dignity of the human
person.
• We believe that family, community and social
participation must be supported and strengthened.
• We have a responsibility to act in order to help one
another and the larger society.
• We need to place the needs of the poor and the
vulnerable first.
• We believe in the dignity of work and the right to
productive work, to decent and fair wages, to private
property, and to economic initiative.
• We must work to promote peace and solidarity in a
world surrounded by violence and conflict.
• We believe that care for the earth and for God’s
creations is a requirement of our faith.
How is Peace and Social Justice Different from the
Ministries Corpus Christi Parish Already Pursues?
Corpus Christi parishioners accomplish so much in the area
of pastoral ministry, but we rarely pursue peace and social
justice responses to problems that we see. For example, a
pastoral response to hunger in
the community would be to set
up a food drive, donate to soup
kitchens, and volunteer to help
at a food pantry. The peace and
social justice response could
involve lobbying for a more
extensive food stamp program,
asking more corporations to
support food distribution organizations, and trying to
improve the minimum wage laws.
Members of a pastoral ministry may confront the problems
of refugees in a community by sponsoring and supporting a
refugee family. Members of a peace and social justice
ministry will look at the same problem and advocate that
government and law enforcement officials need to
strengthen the laws protecting refugees in this state or
educate the community about the importance of Sanctuary
protection for political refugees.
The Peace and Social Justice ministry at Corpus Christi will
look for ways to work hand-in-hand with all the pastoral
ministries at our church, and will also be an advocate for
individuals and populations in our community who are in
need, but may be overlooked by those who can best help
them.
What are Some Examples of Peace and Social
Justice Issues?
The issues can be local, nationwide, or worldwide. They
include: hunger, gun control, the death penalty, the
environment, faithful
citizenship and voting,
affordable housing, war in
the world, migrants and
refugees, immigration,
minimum wages, human
trafficking, affordable
healthcare, abortion, unemployment, support for the
elderly, support for the disabled, euthanasia, Catholic
persecution, poverty, and welfare.
What Peace and Social Justice Issues will Corpus
Christi’s ministry be working on?
Initially, the Peace and Social Justice ministry will be
focusing on issues of hunger, on banning the death penalty,
and on developing affordable housing for those in need.
IN HONOR OF MOTHER’S DAY, 2008
Through our parish campus improvement project, we will be updating our garden that surrounds the Blessed
Mother statue. One of the updates will be a plaque where families have the opportunity to honor their mother in a
truly special way. For a donation of $1,000 all of the “special women” in a family can be recognized. For example,
couples may want to honor both of their moms and if the couple has children, they may want to honor the mother
of their children too. All three may have their names listed in this opportunity.
What better way to have your mother remembered this Mother’s Day and always? Simply fill out and return the
bottom portion of this page with your payment today.
YES! I would love to have this unique naming opportunity!
In support of the mission of Corpus Christi Church, I/we will contribute $1,000 to the Blessed Mother Garden
dedicated to Mothers. These funds will ultimately support the parish renovation and expansion campaign.
