Young Scholars Honored<br />

Ten Receive Presidential Merit Awards<br />

Ten students from seven elementary schools in Palm<br />

Beach and Broward counties were honored at a<br />

Presidential Merit Award Reception and Dinner on<br />

April 7. Each honoree received a $1,000 Presidential<br />

Merit Award, renewable for all four years of high<br />

school. This marked the second year that the<br />

awards have been given by <strong>Pope</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Paul</strong> <strong>II</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> to incoming freshman students.<br />

Admissions Director Barbara Harbin served as Master<br />

of Ceremonies for the celebration attended by the<br />

recipients and their parents and elementary school<br />

principals. “Tonight is very special,” noted Harbin.<br />

“We are recognizing outstanding students who<br />

bring great potential and promise with them<br />

to <strong>Pope</strong>.”<br />

Students receiving the Presidential Merit Award<br />

displayed not only outstanding academic achievements,<br />

but also commendable leadership and service<br />

qualities and an established record of involvement in<br />

clubs and activities.<br />

The ten students receiving this award were: Andrew<br />

Clum from Eagles Landing Middle <strong>School</strong> in Boca<br />

Raton (Mr. James Campbell, Principal); Maria<br />

Fonseca from Mary Help of Christians Catholic<br />

<strong>School</strong> in Parkland (Mr. Robert Messina, Principal);<br />

Dylan Lang and Esther Ponce de Leon from St. Joan<br />

of Arc <strong>School</strong> in Boca Raton (Sr. Ellen Murphy,<br />

RSM, Principal); Jonathan Vilardi from St. Joseph’s<br />

Episcopal <strong>School</strong> in Boynton Beach (Mrs. Tami<br />

Pleasanton, Head of <strong>School</strong>); Areen Fakhoury and<br />

Kenneth Oweis from St. Jude <strong>School</strong> in Boca Raton<br />

(Miss Deborah Armstrong, Principal); Emily<br />

Guinan and Karissa Quiles from St. Mark <strong>School</strong> in<br />

Areen Fakhoury from St. Jude <strong>School</strong> in Boca Raton receives<br />

her Presidential Merit Award from Dr. Michael J. Coury,<br />

President of <strong>Pope</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Paul</strong> <strong>II</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Looking on is<br />

her current Principal, Miss Deborah Armstrong, and her<br />

future principal at <strong>Pope</strong>, Sr. Eileen Sullivan, OP.<br />

Boynton Beach (Dr. Joseph A. Finley, Jr., Principal);<br />

and, <strong>John</strong> Gomez from St. Vincent Ferrer <strong>School</strong> in<br />

Delray Beach (Mrs. Vikki Delgado, Principal).<br />

The students received their awards from Dr.<br />

Michael J. Coury, the school’s President, and Sister<br />

Eileen Sullivan, OP, the school’s Principal. “It is<br />

appropriate,” noted Coury, “that the parents and<br />

principals are with us this evening. They have<br />

played a key role in nurturing and guiding these<br />

students down the twin pathways of academic<br />

excellence and spiritual strength.”<br />
