BC Insider
For members of the Insurance Institute of British Columbia
President’s Message
Summer 2010
I hope that everyone has been enjoying the summer in beautiful British Columbia and you have had the opportunity to get
a bit of a break from the hectic nature of our daily lives. I will be taking a few weeks off this summer to enjoy some quality
time with my two boys, ages 10 and 14. They are growing so fast.
It just seems like yesterday when Past President Carol Kuzyk, FCIP, CRM, asked me if I would be interested in joining
the Insurance Institute of BC (IIBC) Executive. I was honoured to have been asked and accepted with keen interest, that was
about four years ago now. Before then, I spent a couple of years on the Marketing and Communications Committee including
a year as Committee Chair. It’s all been a bit of a blur I must confess, but it has been a wonderful opportunity to meet
so many quality people within the Insurance Industry, right across Canada. Over the years, as a member of the IIBC Council
and Executive, I have witnessed first hand how important the IIBC is to the Insurance industry in BC, what a great job the
Institute does on behalf of its members, and what a high level of dedication and commitment exists with the volunteers
that run the organization.
I have been with ICBC for about 19 years and currently work within the Broker Relations area of the company. When
I started with ICBC, I did not know very much about the CIP program as it wasn’t promoted very extensively within ICBC.
Today, things are very different as the CIP program is promoted regularly and strongly by the ICBC executive resulting in
Mike Dakin, BA, CIP
increased ICBC employee participation in the CIP program.
In BC, CIP course registrations and membership continue to grow. Courses are offered in various formats and locations
throughout the province. Our Vancouver Island Chapter is holding strong, and we are increasing our profile and involvement in the Okanagan region. In addition to our core
educational services (including the CIP, FCIP and GIE programs), we continue to hold a number of informative professional seminars throughout the year. Our CIP Golf Tournaments
and Annual Convocations are traditional highlights on the insurance industry calendar. We continue to invest in broad public marketing, through transit advertising,
advertisements in BC Business publications and other initiatives to promote the CIP brand. Way to go to all the volunteers that make this success possible.
I have always been very impressed by the efforts undertaken by the Insurance Institute to promote Insurance as a potential career choice. This is done in a number of
ways, but notably through the Career Connections and Ambassador programs. The Institute has recognized the recruitment and retention issues the P&C Insurance Industry
will be facing in the future and has established a very robust program to address these challenges. Our ambassadors in BC are doing a fabulous job – getting out to high
school classrooms, career fairs, Feed the Minds of Youth day and other activities – last year we presented to over 3200 students! This is bound to pay off over time, so keep up
the great work Ambassadors!
Top of mind at the national level for the Insurance Institute is undoubtedly the new FCIP program which starts this fall. A considerable investment of time has been
devoted to transforming the FCIP program, working with an industry CEO advisory panel, academics from leading Canadian business schools and industry subject matter
experts. The curriculum looks very interesting and I would encourage you to check out the website at www.insuranceinstitute.ca/newFCIP.
Thanks so much to outgoing President Shaun Sinclair, MBA, FCIP, CRM for an outstanding year. Shaun demonstrates leadership, commitment and has a belief in “giving
back” to the industry. It was his vision, for example, that led to the very successful Battle of the Insurance Bands fundraiser for the Variety Club, which we are confident will
be supported by Institute members as an annual event.
I am honoured and humbled at the prospect of being President of the Insurance Institute of BC over the next year, following in the footsteps of a long series of dedicated
professionals who have represented the Institute and our industry with such class and dignity. I look forward to working with this year’s Executive and Council as well as the
dedicated IIBC office staff, to build on the successes of the past and to continue to help build a promising future for the Institute here in BC.
All the best to everyone.
Mike Dakin, BA, CIP
academic division report “i am a Baby Boomer”
by Wes Chowen, BA, CIP, CRM, Vice-President, Academic Division
This is my third year on the Executive of the Insurance Institute of British Columbia (IIBC), I now assume a new set of responsibilities with the Academic Division. The three committees
that form this division operate according to formal mandates, with a general direction to recruit and then educate our members.
I am a Baby Boomer, which mean I was born sometime between 1947 and1966. I am male and employed in the Property & Casualty Insurance Industry. This means I will
retire at age 59.2 because I live in Canada, or possibly 58 because I live in B.C., or 63.8 if I continue to work as a broker, but 59.1 if I returned to work in Claims.
Our industry and particularly B.C., is facing a wave of retirements over the next 5-10 years. As the educational arm of the P&C industry, the Insurance Institute is mandated
to recruit and then to train and develop the professionals and managers of the future.
With this dual responsibility of recruiting and educating, Jennifer Perry, CHRP, CPM of Hub International Insurance Brokers returns to Chair our Education & Career Connections
Committee. Jennifer and her committee will continue to develop ambassadors to work within the Career Connections Program. Last year, our ambassadors presented to
92 classrooms and to over 3200 students. If you are interested in becoming an ambassador of our profession, be sure to contact Jennifer. This committee is also responsible for
overseeing our in-class CIP and GIE programs.
Mark Francis, FCIP, ACS of ICBC, another Baby Boomer I believe, has moved from his previous role as Chair of our Future Directions Committee to the Chair position of our
Marketing & Communications Committee. Mark’s group is responsible for all of our marketing and promotional material. He’s been volunteering with IIBC for a long time and
brings a wealth of experience to the committee. Keep up the good work Mark!
Our Okanagan Committee will expand its boundaries to include Thompson Okanagan, as Connie Desharnais, CIP of Gore Mutual Insurance and her committee hopes to grow
our presence in Kamloops. Connie is taking over this two year old committee for the first time and her positive outlook will provide immediate impact.
According to a recent study conducted on behalf of the Insurance Institute of Canada, “A Demographic Analysis of the Property & Casualty Insurance Industry in Canada”,
there is less than one worker under the age of 45 for every manager currently in the P&C industry’s work force. The immediate future is going to provide rewarding opportunities
for new entrants and existing professionals. Our Academic Division will continue to recruit and train adjusters, examiners, underwriters, agents, brokers, IT personnel, administrators,
actuaries, and HR personnel.
I look forward to working with the Academic Committee’s Chairs and Committee Members, and fully recognize the commitment made by these great volunteers. I hope that
all staff and members enjoy the summer. See you in September.
Professional division report “Volunteer Work is not actually Work”
by Pierre Chavigny, CIP, CRM, Vice-President, Professional Division
One of the best life lessons that I have learned over the years is that volunteer ‘work’ is actually not ‘work’, but an absolutely wonderful opportunity to learn, and to grow & develop
myself as a human and as a professional. In the past six years, I have had great experiences volunteering with the Insurance Institute of BC (IIBC) as a committee member,
committee Chair, Ambassador and, most recently as Secretary Treasurer. I have also volunteered in my home town with the Langley RCMP, Langley United Youth Soccer Association
and Langley Minor Hockey. I can honestly say that for everything that I have ‘put in’, I have easily had returned back to
me in the form of new friends, contacts, memories and education! So I ask you… When will you be joining us??
I am very pleased to announce that Jasmine Sodhi, BA, CIP of ICBC will be chairing our Future Directions Committee for
2010-2011. This will be Jasmine’s third different Committee after very successful terms chairing our Seminars Committee
in 2009-2010 and our Education Committee in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. Jasmine served as an Education Committee
member for two years before becoming Chair in 2007 and also taught “Principles & Practice of Insurance” for three years.
Jasmine’s highlights from last year are the introduction of Webinars (online seminars), which were very successful. Also,
the Committee worked on expanding our Seminars outside of the downtown core in an effort to reach more members.
These innovative ideas and efforts allow the IIBC to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to being responsive to the
needs of our Membership!
I am also very pleased to welcome Lynne Vetter, FCIP of Wawanesa Insurance who will be ‘officially’ chairing her
first committee, Events. Halfway through 2009-2010, Lynne graciously assumed leadership of the Events Committee in
addition to her work with the Marketing Committee (for which she has spent the previous eight years). Lynne has actually
been volunteering with IIBC for the past 15 years in the role of Company Liaison. Highlights for Lynne from the past year
include working on the IIBC’s inaugural Battle of the Insurance Bands Charity event which raised over $11,000 for Variety
Children’s Charity and her continued work on the CIP Society’s Annual Golf Tournament which sold out in an incredible two
weeks time!
This year, we also get to welcome back Helena Dolan, BMath, FCIP, CRM of Intact Insurance after a one year hiatus. Helena
will be chairing our Seminars Committee for the first time. In 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, Helena chaired the Marketing
& Communications Committee upon her arrival in BC from Ontario. Highlights for Helena included the Billboard advertising
campaigns and Networking Events that proved to successfully promote the CIP brand within our industry and to the end
consumer who ultimately benefits from best in class service that a CIP graduate can provide!
I’m sure that if you ask anyone who has volunteered with the Insurance Institute, you will hear that the ‘work’ was
exciting, innovative, gratifying and most of all, fun! It’s a labour of love that will definitely be a positive return on the
investment of sharing your time and experience. Please feel free to contact any of us for ways in which you can bring your
ideas and enthusiasm!
I would like to thank our Committee Chairs in advance for their continued dedication to the IIBC!
2010 CiP society of BC, annual golf tournament – Vancouver
We held our 8th Annual CIP Society Golf Tournament
on June 9th at Hazelmere Golf Course in
Surrey. The tournament sold out in a record two
weeks with 160 golfers and 186 people for dinner.
The forecast looked extremely grim as the rain
poured down in the morning, but luck was on
our side again and the sky cleared just in time for
everyone to enjoy a fun afternoon on the course!
With special thanks to The Mutual Fire Insurance
Company of BC, we were able to once again
go full force with a wine theme. Everyone really
enjoyed the featured BC wine, Quinta Ferreira
from Oliver, served at the wine tasting station
during the afternoon and with dinner.
We were pleased to present once again a cheque for $1215 to WICC which was generated from the partial proceeds from mulligan sales and hole sponsorships.
Our goal remains to stand out as the premier golf tournament in the industry and we feel we achieved this thanks to our sponsors, our volunteers and all the golfers! Without
you, it wouldn’t be possible!
instructor spotlight
greg thierman, CIP, CFE
Registrations for the CIP program are on the rise and this is due largely to our knowledgeable and dedicated CIP instructors. Greg
Thierman CIP, CFE is one of those instructors. Over the years, Greg has taught ‘Insurance Against Liability’, ‘Fraud Awareness and
Prevention’, ‘Essentials of Loss Adjusting’ and ‘Advanced Loss Adjusting’ in Kelowna. He teaches his courses in the traditional evening
classroom setting, but he has also branched out and recently began delivering his courses online so he can accommodate students
who are not able to attend his much sought-after courses in person.
In 2002, Greg was the recipient of the Insurance Institute of Northern Alberta Instructor of the Year award, and his BC students
certainly agree! One student wrote “Greg taught one of the few CIP courses where I actually never wanted to miss a class as it was
so interesting. Greg is an excellent instructor and I learned tons.” Another student commented, “…Greg was the absolute BEST
instructor. He knows the material inside and out and teaches perfectly. I will take any courses Greg may teach in the future.”
Greg knows when it comes to teaching; you get back what you put in. When asked why he loves teaching he replied, “I like the challenge of making the classes interesting
and relevant, I enjoy the interaction with the students and I appreciate learning something during every class from the students experiences and comments.” Instructing can
be challenging, but it is very rewarding.
Greg’s passion for teaching is reflective of his overall passion for life. Recently, Greg participated in a fundraising event for the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade. He
shaved off this trademark ‘FRO’ to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Greg has a lot of experience in the insurance industry, but it is his passion for life and learning
that makes him an excellent instructor!
The Insurance Institute of BC would like to thank Greg and all of the BC instructors for their hard work and dedication. If you are interested in joining the ranks and teaching
CIP courses, please contact Karen Graves at kgraves@insuranceinstitute.ca .
