Coach Development Executive Summary This Coaching Report covers the period from 0 July 2007 to 30 June 2008. The report is based principally on the Targets, Projects and Initiatives contained in the TFA 2008- 0 Strategic Plan, with a brief response on Outcomes achieved, together with associated comment. It should be noted that the Targets, Projects and Initiatives were subject to a limited consultative process. The period 2007-08 was negatively affected by TFA staff personnel absences and changes that caused some leadership, support and coordination concerns in the technical arena. In the latter part of the previous year and through the early stages of this reporting year there was no National Technical Manager appointed. Another vacancy occurred once again towards the latter part of this reporting year. These personnel changes followed on from a previous lengthy period without any appointed TFA staff dedicated to technical matters. Throughout these changes the TFA Coaching Arm has attempted to maintain focus and achieve success, some of which have been beyond the specifications detailed in the referenced Strategic Plan. Coaching, by the very nature of the roles our accredited coaches at different levels perform, should not be viewed or restricted to one small element of one Strategic Plan Target. The profession directly relates to increased participation, thriving at the elite level, providing quality experiences for participants and certainly raising the profile of the game. Coaching has an influence in each of these objectives and, in practice, on every facet of the game. However, for the purposes of this report, the comment will generally be restricted to Key Result Area Target 3.e. of the Strategic Plan. Much of the work of the coaching management team during this reporting period has been directed towards the review and re-development of effective coaching policies. Coach Development – Projects & Initiatives Recruitment & Retention Plan – linked initiatives The general philosophy of the establishment of a recruitment and retention coaching plan is incorporated in other policies that have been drafted and are in the process of consideration by the National Coaching Reference Group (NCRG). Policies around issues such as coaching awards, recognition and coaching currency / updating are in the draft stage. 6 2007/08 Annual Report Chief Executive Officer Report Coach Development & Communication Plan Incorporated in a range of drafted coaching policies including roles and responsibilities, coaching competencies, coach education for various levels, resource development, appeals and complaints processes, schools excellence programs and selections and appointments. NCRG The NCRG was initiated & is operating out-of-session, although numerous attempts to conduct meetings subsequent to the inaugural meeting in January 2007 have not met with success. The group continues to operate verbally, by telephone and online, however a meeting needs to be planned and initiated as a priority. Work on the NCRG is on-going. Review of Policy Some twenty-five formal Coaching Policies have been identified to reflect current requirements. Several of these have been endorsed by the NCRG and are in final draft stage. Ten more policies are in second or third draft stages while another six policies are in first draft stage. The coaching policy list is a dynamic document and work on coaching policies is on-going. Review & update of courses The Community Coaching Course is operational. The L course was subject to a review during the reporting period and the final document has been submitted to the Australian Sports Commission for endorsement. The new L2 course, with reduced content and an updated workbook, together with an additional practical element is nearing completion. The TFA L3 is subject to a full review over the coming months and will incorporate a pre-requisite practical element leading to an invitationtype attendance. It is anticipated that a L3 course will be conducted during 200 . Community Coaching Course This initiative is completed, subject to an official launch. Assessment, Feedback & Review Panel for National Events The two connected areas relating to observation, assessment and feedback have been identified and policies drafted. The elite assessment area has been covered by the creation of the National Elite Coaching Assessment Panel (NECAP) with the associated policy now in final draft stage. Action continues with regards to the format and process for observation and feedback activities directed towards non-elite coaches. National coaching reviews were completed at the Australian 8s Championships and at the National Touch League.
