Annual Report 2009-2010

The <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Vilas</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> and Friends of the <strong>Zoo</strong> are committed to Strengthening the Bond of<br />
its visitors with the natural world and the animal kingdom.<br />
Another wonderful year! Over 700,000<br />
visitors enjoyed your <strong>Zoo</strong>.<br />
Earth Day, our first major event of the year,<br />
brought visitors together to learn about and<br />
enjoy conserving our natural resources. Over<br />
4,000 trees were given out to be planted as<br />
part of a ‘Polar Bear Forest’, an initiative to<br />
help reduce the harmful effects of global<br />
climate change sponsored by our partners: the<br />
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources<br />
and Polar Bears International.<br />
Our new Education Garden, Wetland Walkway<br />
and Wetland Viewing Deck are terrific<br />
additions. Visitors view over thirty species of<br />
plants that are grown as food for your animals,<br />
including cherries, pears, willow, bamboo and<br />
many garden vegetables.<br />
We continued our efforts to conserve energy<br />
and use our successes to inspire visitors. Our<br />
newest initiatives, rain water collection and<br />
rain gardens, are excellent examples of easy to<br />
do conservation projects. Rain water recovered<br />
from the roof of our Rain Forest is used to water<br />
our tropical plants. Each gallon recovered saves<br />
us two gallons of water that would have been<br />
run through our reverse osmosis system.<br />
Conservation Education continues to be our<br />
greatest and longest running program. <strong>Zoo</strong><br />
School, Bleacher Programs, Off site Programs<br />
and Animal Ambassadors help connect over<br />
forty thousand participants with the wonders<br />
of our natural world. Many many thanks to our<br />
dedicated Conservation Education Volunteers.<br />
Giraffe, Bison, Great Ape and Meerkat animal<br />
exhibits and their replica habitats have been<br />
significantly improved. Seeing animals enjoy a<br />
newly constructed exhibit is a great reward.<br />
New additions to our animal collection<br />
included four female meerkats, two Geoffroy<br />
marmosets, two sugar gliders, a fairy blue bird<br />
and doves. Your <strong>Zoo</strong> participates in seventeen<br />
animal management Species Survival Plans<br />
administered by the AZA (Association of <strong>Zoo</strong>s<br />
& Aquariums). These programs are dedicated<br />
to the sustainability of both wild and captive<br />
animal populations.<br />
Plans for the Arctic Passage have been<br />
completed. County Executive Kathleen Falk has<br />
included funding for this project in the 2011<br />
County Budget and construction could begin in<br />
the coming year. A new Children’s <strong>Zoo</strong> Barn is<br />
nearing completion and will open in the Spring.<br />

Over 30,000 children attended annual<br />
education programs and thousands more<br />
visited the <strong>Zoo</strong> for class field trips.<br />
What’s New?<br />
We have added a new Conservation Education<br />
Animal Ambassador cart on honeybees. It<br />
complements the observational beehive that is<br />
in the Discovery Center, and is maintained by<br />
the Dane County Beekeepers Association.<br />
<strong>Zoo</strong> Summer School<br />
Once again, we were filled to capacity within<br />
the first few weeks of advertising the classes...<br />
300+ children paid to get “up close and<br />
personal” with your zoo animals. The keepers<br />
and teaching staff for summer school did an<br />
excellent job – as they always do – enriching<br />
children’s lives with education animals in the<br />
classroom, and your zoo animals on<br />
the grounds.<br />
Scholarship Program<br />
The Friends of the <strong>Zoo</strong> Scholarship was<br />
split amongst three research projects for the<br />
University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary<br />
Medicine Students this year! Allison Gutwillig,<br />
Christine Molter and Lauren Schneider were<br />
recipients of this year’s scholarship. Their<br />
research projects varied from working with<br />
local birds to studying sea turtles off the coast<br />
of North and South Carolina.<br />

The Friends of the <strong>Zoo</strong>’s trademark events again delighted tens of thousands of visitors this<br />
year while raising funds for the <strong>Zoo</strong> Century renovation plans.<br />
Green & Gold Training Camp 2009<br />
The <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Vilas</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> was fortunate enough to<br />
have Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation<br />
present Green and Gold Training Camp on zoo<br />
grounds for the 3rd year in a row. On Saturday,<br />
July 18, 2009 Green Bay’s Donald Driver and<br />
Edgar Bennett led a mini-training camp for kids<br />
ages 5-12. Each participant jumped, jacked<br />
and ran with the pros, and 10 lucky kids won a<br />
regulation football personally autographed by<br />

The <strong>Zoo</strong> Run Run<br />
The 4th Annual <strong>Zoo</strong> Run Run was another<br />
successful event! Event participation increased<br />
by 50% and over 1,350 participants joined us<br />
for the 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run benefiting<br />
the <strong>Zoo</strong>. Town Bank enjoyed sponsoring the<br />

Update with this year’s events<br />
similarly successful Roo Run Run with nearly<br />
300 little ones who ran, hopped and skipped to<br />
the finish line here in the <strong>Zoo</strong>.<br />
Halloween at the <strong>Zoo</strong><br />
Associated Bank presented Halloween at<br />
the <strong>Zoo</strong> for the third consecutive year on<br />
a beautiful sunny fall day. They took great<br />
pleasure in seeing nearly 13,000 princesses,<br />
superheroes, kid-wizards, and other costumed<br />
guests come out to enjoy the festivities… that’s<br />
2,000 more than the previous year! As they<br />
tricked and treated, kids were surrounded by<br />
animal encounters, keeper talks, and festive<br />
decorations. There were 14 Treat Stops along<br />
the route, live music, bounce castles, and FREE<br />
carousel rides all day!

that the <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Vilas</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> continues to thrive for<br />

Ways to Give:<br />
Gifts to the Endowment are one of the best<br />
ways to provide enduring support. Because<br />
endowments exist in perpetuity, donors and<br />
their families can enjoy the emotional rewards<br />
of these funds for generations to come.<br />
Tributes and Memorials provide a meaningful<br />
way to honor a special person or event while<br />
supporting the conservation, education and<br />
outreach efforts of the <strong>Zoo</strong>.<br />
Matching Gifts allow individuals to give twice<br />
as much by having their employer match their<br />
pledged amount.<br />
Bequests can be as simple as naming the <strong>Henry</strong><br />
<strong>Vilas</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> in your will. For example, “I hereby<br />
give, devise, and bequeath to the <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Vilas</strong><br />
Park <strong>Zoo</strong>logical Society the amount of $___ for<br />
its exempt purposes.” A bequest can consist<br />
of property, securities, real estate, cash or<br />
anything else of value.<br />
Charitable Trusts have many advantages. This<br />
versatile planned gift allows for an immediate<br />
charitable tax deduction and continues to earn<br />
income for the rest of the donor’s life.<br />
Corporate Partnerships allow companies to<br />
make significant financial contributions, while<br />
receiving a variety of benefits like tax breaks,<br />
increased visibility and more.<br />
<strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Vilas</strong> Annual fund is vital to the <strong>Zoo</strong>’s<br />

the fund can be used to meet some of the <strong>Zoo</strong>’s<br />
