Dear Friends,
I was surprised – and deeply touched.
I left Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul, MN, twenty-five years
ago, but occasionally I am in contact with some graduates. I was
included in a series of e-mails about a 1983 graduate who had died.
Then a few days later, I received another e-mail from a young man
who was a classmate of the deceased but whom I never thought I had
“connected with” very much. He wrote this to me: “Just wanted to
take this chance to thank you for being the understanding, caring
role model you were for me and all of us. I hope you know how
important it was to have someone like you in our lives at an age when
things can get pretty confusing. I hope you are doing well.”
Doing well, heck! I was flying high. So often people really never
know what kind of impact we have on one another, especially
students who are struggling through adolescence. But, when over 25
years later, a message like this one reaches us, we are “blown away”
and hope that others had a similar experience.
This issue of Partners in Mission includes inspiring stories
about people of all ages who have made or are making a difference.
“Healing Haiti” documents the activities of our students at every
level, elementary, high school, and university, to reach out and
make a difference in the lives of the struggling earthquake victims.
Fe y Vida posts an impressive list of accomplishments over the last
15 years since it was established in 1994. Saint Mary’s Press, the
Midwest District, the Lasallian Education Fund, and all the Brothers
who have served on boards have helped Fe y Vida become one of
the largest national organizations of Hispanic ministry in the United
States.
This issue focuses on two Lasallian educators who are
“understanding, caring role models” for young people. Their very
presence encourages their students to perform service for those who
have less than they and their families have, to engage in the mission
handed to us by St. John Baptist de La Salle.
For the last ten years the Spring/Summer issue of Partners has
always included the Honor Roll of Donors, which lists friends and
“Partners” in our Lasallian mission. In this lifetime you will never
know the difference that you make in so many lives, but your efforts
in good times and hard times continue to support our Ministries and
the Mission of John Baptist de La Salle.
