At San Miguel (Tulsa, OK) the students started a project called “Pennies for
Haiti.” One student brought to school a large jug of coins his family had saved
for many months. All the school got involved pitching in coins, and little by
little the amount grew to $580. The project proved the point of the theme
of the activity – that practicing little loving actions each day can make a
difference in the lives of other people.

On the first day of Catholic
Schools Week during an all
school liturgy the students at
Montini Catholic High School
(Lombard, IL) watched a
video about Haiti prepared
by one student. As a result,
the school organized a “Half
for Haiti” campaign where
students donated half of their
regular lunch money to the
people of Haiti. Donations
were also collected during
Homeroom, and the student
body raised over $4,000.
At De La Salle High School
(Minneapolis, MN) three
students and one faculty
member volunteered to have
their heads shaved if the school collected at least $2,000. The student body
raised more than that, so at a pep fest in the gymnasium the whole school
watched as they had their heads shaved. Half of the money was donated to the
Red Cross because a local bank matched $1,000 donations. The remaining
donations were sent to another agency to help the people of Haiti.

volunteers had their heads
shaved at the pep-fest.
Other creative efforts around the Midwest District included a shoe drive at
St. Patrick High School (Chicago, IL), a “Beans and Jeans” day at Bishop
Kelly High School (Tulsa, OK), a pizza party at Christian Brothers University
(Memphis, TN), a “Dance for Haiti” at Saint Mary’s University (Winona, MN), and a “Hope for Haiti”
collection at Lewis University (Romeoville, IL). Space does not allow for detailed coverage of all the efforts
from around the District.
As reports and photographs from around the District arrived at the Provincial Office in Burr Ridge, one thing
seemed certain. The Lasallian values of faith, service and community have been appropriated by students,
faculty members and staff members of the many ministries sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers.
The people of Haiti may never know about the Midwest District, but they will experience the effects of these
efforts by dedicated Lasallians to heal Haiti by touching the hearts of its people.
