The Christian Brothers Adopt-A-Student Program began in 1987 to assist needy students with financial aid to realize an education at a Lasallian School. Money is raised by contacting foundations, corporations and individuals for direct grants to the program. The grant money is sent to the school, and the school matches a needy student with the scholarship grant. All scholarship grants go directly to the student’s tuition. This Program is a cooperative venture between needy parents who pay as much of the tuition as they are able; the school which contributes a partial scholarship and the sponsor – corporations, banks, foundations, or individuals, who make charitable donations to complete the arrangements. Currently, Brother Kenneth Gillund, FSC is the Program Director for Adopt-A-Student at the Provincial Office, Burr Ridge, Illinois. Lasallian Social Justice Institute(LSJI)El Paso July 7 - July 14 El Paso, Texas LSJI El Paso focuses on the theme of “Global Economic Justice”, and includes several days of encounters on both sides of the border, followed by theological and sociological presentations. On August 10, participants will move to the campus of Saint Mary’s College in Moraga for theological and sociological presentations. Annual District Day and Jubilee Celebration July 24 Lewis University, Romeoville, IL Midwest District Brothers will gather for meetings during the day addressing district wide issues including the nomination of a new Provincial this fall. Noteworthy News n Advancement officers from schools throughout the Midwest District met at the Provincial Office, Burr Ridge, IL on November 4, 2009 to share information and “Best Practices” so that all could learn from one another. Participants from twelve schools discussed their experiences with Annual Giving, Capital Campaigns, and Planned Giving. Plans are in the works to make this an annual event. This raffle has been held annually since 1995 when the Midwest District came into existence. This year a gross total of over $400,000 was raised to support participating ministries. Sixteen winners were awarded a total of $19,250. The winners and their prizes include the following: $5,000 - Cathy Marchetti (Plainfield, IL) and Sharon O’Brien (Hayward, WI); $2,500 - Thomas Kren (Downers Grove, IL); $1,000 - Elizabeth Buckley (Mundelein, IL), Ashly Koenig (Plainfield, IL) and Bob Caesar (New Brother Thomas Dominic Vance prepares for the raffle drawing. Albany, IN); $500 - Frank Nixon (Homer Glen, IL), Stephen Iandolo (Orlando, FL), Erin Mink Garvey (Chicago, IL), Zlata Dugandzic (Westchester, IL) and Tom Kersten (Long Grove, IL); $250 - David Karson (Chicago, IL), Sean Haley (Chicago, IL), Sunshine Monk, (Sykesville, MD), Kathryn Aschenbrenner, (Saint Louis, MO) and Benjamin Diaz (Chicago, IL). Of the Lasallian ministries where winning tickets were sold, Lewis University headed the list with four, followed by St. Joseph H.S. with three and David Darst Center with two. The ministries that sold one winning ticket each were De La Salle Blackfeet School, St. Patrick H.S., San Miguel Chicago, La Salle Manor, Midwest District Office, La Salle Institute Retreat Center and De La Salle Institute.
