LOHARDAGA
It gives me immense pleasure to present the annual report
for the year 2008-2009 that was remain full of events and
vibrant. The journey of social development started in the year
of 1985, when a group of likeminded people inspired by
the philosophy of Gandhiji, Vinobaji and Jayprakashji came
together for the cause of social development and established
Lohardaga Gram Swarajya Sansthan. Since beginning, we
SECRETARY
have been focusing to the most downtrodden and disadvantaged
section of the people to bring positive changes in their socioeconomic
conditions.
The seed that had been sowed twenty-two years back, now it
became a large tree. LGSS is now a dedicated group of more
than two hundred staff members working for the sake of
social development in Lohardaga, Gumla and Ranchi districts
in Jharkhand.
Now I would like to present our Annual Report for the fi nancial
THE
year 2008-09. For us, the year had remained much eventful. In this
year, we implemented different relevant developmental projects
to address the major issues with innovative, participative and
OF
sustainable approach. Our endeavour was especially focused
on women empowerment through promotion of SHGs; social
DESK
mobilization for natural resource management to improve the
status of livelihood; health awareness and services for women
and children; education for children at risk; skill development
training for rural and marginal farmers; support to the senior
citizens; and support to physically and mentally challenged
THE
persons.
I express my heartiest thanks and best regards to the district
administrations, Government agencies, donors and partner
In the year 1985, few people from different section of the society inspired by the Gandhian
philosophy and the noble idea of self-rule founded Lohardaga Gram Swarajya Sansthan as a
COMMUNITY HEALTH
A Glimpse of Our Major Activities
2008-2009
LGSS
LOHARDAGA
Promoting health facilities to the underprivileged communities in both rural and urban
areas of Lohardaga and Gumla Districts was one of our major thrust areas. To provide basic
health services, LGSS has been collaborating with the Government of Jharkhand and other
community service agencies, working in the health sector. We also endeavoured to create
health awareness in the community, especially among the women.
Reproductive and Child Health & Nutrition
With the support of CARE, this program is going on in all the 5 blocks of Lohardaga district
and 7 blocks in Gumla district. Our focus in this program is to improve the prevailing Health
and nutritional condition within the rural community and that services are availed by the
target groups. The target group is pregnant women, lactating women and children below
3 years of age. Primary objective is to reduce Malnutrition and Infant Mortality Rate. We
are presently working on three technical interventions, namely Essential nutrition action,
Community based ANC and New born care, and Primary immunization. For achieving our
goal, various activities have been initiated during the project period. One such activity is the
Nutrition and Health day (NH Day), in which health and nutrition services are provided to
the benefi ciaries in the AWCs. ANMs deliver the health services and the AWWs distribute THR
(Take home ration) to the benefi ciaries during NH Days. To empower the community so that
they can demand services from the service providers, activities like Saas-Bahu-Pati Sammelans
are being organized regularly in the AWCs. In these Sammelan’s, messages relating to Health
and Nutrition are given to community and also regarding the services of ICDS and Health.
For the promotion of ideal practices within the community, video shows on New born care
and Immunization were also organized in AWCs. For effective service delivery, convergence
meetings of Health and ICDS at village, Block and District level are being organized and used
for better implementation of the program. Apart from these, trainings and capacity building
of ANMs, AWWs and Clusters leaders being carried out from time to time for improving the
quality of services.
Another programme had been implemented by LGSS in Sadar block of Gumla district of
Jharkhand is the LCA (Life Cycle Approach) project with support from CINI and SDTT. A
population of thirty thousand of twenty-seven villages had been covered with the aim of
improving the overall maternal and child health status. It had been targeted its interventions
at three critical stages of pregnancy, childhood and adolescent health. In this context the
community participation had been ensured through Village Health Committees and 109
Sahiyya who worked as change agents. During this reporting year, health camps had been
organized to identify the high risk mothers in six sub-centers. Pathological tests had also
been done for them. Training on RTI / STI, HIV / AIDS and on adolescent health had been
done. Under this project adolescent groups had been formed. Awareness had been spread
to reduce the high rate of Anemia among the women in the project target area. Other
than these, regular convergence had been ensured with different state endeavour towards
achieving the same objectives.
During the year, another RCH programme has also been implemented with the support
from CCF India. The main thrust area of this project was on nutrition, adolescent health and
reproductive hygiene, safe abortion, family planning, RTI / STI, infertility, menopause, and
community participation in this health initiative. As this project started in this year only, the
project team members had given training for addressing these issues effi ciently and on P D
Hearth, and detailed survey of ten villages had been done. Meetings of DLAC, BLAC, ANMs
and AWWs had also been organized to streamline the community health services. During
this year four hundred ninety-fi ve children had been given deworming medication.
A major reason for anemia, ill health and mortality in women is due to unsafe means of abortion
practices, which are still prevalent in rural areas. This project Kalyani had been implemented
with the support from IPAS. Its objective is to promote awareness on safe abortion services
with special focus on early and legal aspects of seeking abortion services through behavior
change communication. This project is in the starting phase of implementation. Till date
sensitization at block level, ANMs, AWWs and Sahhiyas were conducted. In the district level
sensitization meeting, participation of civil surgeon and medical offi cers of all the 5 blocks
participated. The block level sensitization meetings are also getting good support from the
medical offi cers and CDPOs. Home visits and group meetings are regularly carried out in the
villages for awareness generation regarding safe abortion practices. To advocate district and
block level health functionaries to provide comprehensive abortion care services and involve
community health worker on the issue. We are getting support of district administration for
EDUCATION
In LGSS we believe that this backward community should be provided with proper and
quality education to ensure the overall sustainable development. With the main objective
to mainstream the dropout children previously we had implemented educational project
in Lohardaga district. There were 2058 children in these centres and during the year, 1139
children had been mainstreamed in different schools. To ensure the participation of the
community, Village Education Committees were formed. It was supported by NBJK and
Reach India. Presently 1 Bapu Bal Niketan is running by the community itself, at village
Chandu Ban Dahar in Kuru block. 43 students are enrolled here including drop outs
children.
NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Natural resource management is one of the major thrust areas of LGSS. We believe that
sustainable development is not possible without proper management of the available
natural resources, because majority of the population in our operational area are dependent
on the available natural resources to a great extent. Towards achieving this developmental
goal, we had been implementing different projects during this reporting year.
Watershed Development
Three watershed projects named Hariyali had been implemented during the reporting year,
with the support from DRDA, Lohardaga under IWDP in Bhasko, Khakparta and Bagha
village of Lohardaga district. The main objectives of these projects are to improve the
existing condition of village land and water resources, and to improve their livelihood status
through proper land treatment, agricultural development and formation of SHGs. These
projects cover 1500 hectares, 500 hectares of each village for the development work. During
the year, 1 farm pond and 1 rainwater harvesting tank had been constructed; 5 hectares
of land brought under social forestry; crop demonstration had been done in 4.5 hectares.
In these three watershed areas, 15 SHGs had also been remained functioning. Community
development and trainings on Book Keeping and Account Management, and Soil Testing
were organized for the members of these SHGs. An Exposure Visit had also been organized
to Ramkrishna Mission and Demotand, Hazaribagh.
2008-2009

AGRICULTURE
2008-2009
LGSS
LOHARDAGA
Agriculture is the primary occupation of rural Lohardaga. Agriculture here is dependent
on monsoon for yield. In absence of adequate rain, agriculture production suffers and the
cultivators do not get return of their investment and hard work. Migration of rural mass also
occurs due to lack of adequate food production through out the year. Keeping in view the
ground realities, LGSS with the support of SPWD is promoting the technique of SRI (System
of Rice Intensifi cation). In this method the production increases 2 to 3 times for the same
amount of land and investment. It was implemented in 14 Villages of Lohardaga out of
which 10 are from Bhandra block and 4 from Sadar block. Awareness building was carried
out through wall writings, video shows, and Pamphlet/Booklet distribution. After meetings
with the villagers in the targeted villages, 10 numbers of Lead farmers and 154 numbers of
farmers selected for SRI cultivation. Trainings of farmers on SRI conducted and input like
fertilizers, and pesticides supplied for the purpose. Apart from these a weeder each in the
14 target villages was given. Good response and support provided from District agriculture
offi cer of Lohardaga district as well as BAO of Bhandra. For the purpose of bank linkage &
formation of Kisan clubs, support provided from LDM and Manager, BoI Lohardaga. Results
were fascinating as benefi t of Rs.3340/- per acre earned, as compared to traditional method
of farming. Kisan Mela was also organized in Bhanda Block campus.
