Dr. Hoyt has been active in health policy has received numerous honors/awards, some <strong>of</strong><br />
which include: Special Recognition Award for passage <strong>of</strong> SB 800 - The National 9-1-1 Bill;<br />
ENA - Kelleher & Lifetime Achievement Award; AANP - State Award for Excellence; CANP -<br />
NP <strong>of</strong> Distinction Award in California; and, Sigma Theta Tau Award for Excellence in<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Clinical Practice.<br />

Kathy Shadle James is an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> at the Hahn School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> and<br />
Health Sciences at University <strong>of</strong> San Diego.<br />
Dr. James is a nurse scholar recognized <strong>international</strong>ly for her work in childhood obesity.<br />
Her expertise has advanced the care <strong>of</strong> families in obesity prevention/intervention through<br />
workshops for hundreds <strong>of</strong> nurses, physicians, and allied health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals globally. She<br />
is dedicated to improving the quality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> underserved families facing the challenges <strong>of</strong><br />
childhood obesity and has demonstrated this with her research, presentations, and publications.<br />
Through community and interdisciplinary partnerships, her work has led to the implementation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a nationally recognized program “Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition”<br />
(WECAN) in an underserved, ethnically diverse population in San Diego, CA. This project<br />
dramatically decreases health disparities by improving access to weight management strategies,<br />
demonstrating long term effectiveness in preventing childhood obesity in minority and low<br />
income families; and provides empirical evidence for promotion <strong>of</strong> this program globally.<br />
Dr. James’ recognition as a childhood obesity expert also includes over 25 presentations on<br />
the topic with annual invitations to present key treatment approaches based on evidence based<br />
practice at national and <strong>international</strong> conferences. She participates on statewide task forces<br />
which develop treatment guidelines for health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and serves as an obesity content<br />
expert for the California Medical Association Foundation and California Association <strong>of</strong> Health<br />
Plans. Her scholarship provides empirically derived knowledge to inform practice and health<br />
policy related to childhood obesity and is foundational for childhood obesity prevention.<br />
Dr. James received her Doctor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Science from the University <strong>of</strong> San Diego.<br />
aUDREY lYnDOn, pHD, RnC, Cns-bC<br />
Audrey Lyndon is an Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the University <strong>of</strong> California, San Francisco School <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> and a Clinical Research Scholar in the UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.<br />
Dr. Lyndon’s research focus is on patient safety in maternity and neonatal care. She is<br />
particularly interested in determining the causes <strong>of</strong> variation in clinicians’ ability to effectively<br />
communicate safety concerns, and in documenting nursing’s contributions to maintaining patient<br />
safety. Dr. Lyndon is the lead editor for a widely used textbook on Fetal Heart Monitoring,<br />
and the co-chair and lead editor for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative<br />
Obstetric Hemorrhage Toolkit, which has been cited nationally and <strong>international</strong>ly as a model<br />
for interdisciplinary quality improvement efforts. She is a volunteer leader with the Association<br />
<strong>of</strong> Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses-California Section and serves on several<br />
national Association work groups. She is also a member <strong>of</strong> the Executive Committee for the<br />
California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative.<br />
Dr. Lyndon holds a PhD and an MS in <strong>Nursing</strong> from University <strong>of</strong> California, San Francisco,<br />
and a BA in Biology and Women’s Studies from University <strong>of</strong> California, Santa Cruz. She has<br />
practiced as a staff nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and faculty in community and academic<br />
labor & delivery units in the Washington-Baltimore region and in San Francisco.<br />

Kris McLoughlin is the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Education, Performance Improvement and Research<br />
at the University <strong>of</strong> California Los Angeles, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and an Adjunct<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the UCLA School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>. She is board certified by the ANCC as<br />
a Clinical Nurse Specialist in both Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>. Additionally she is a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. Dr. McLoughlin is also<br />
self-employed as a Mental Health Clinical and Systems Consultant.<br />
