Dr. Maklic is focused on nursing driven interventions that optimize outcomes <strong>of</strong> critically and<br />

acutely ill patients. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist she is recognized as a leader in critical care<br />

nursing practice that challenges practice to be based on current best evidence. She has been<br />

successful in supporting bedside nurses as they implement evidence-based practice initiatives<br />

to improve patient outcomes. Her practice expertise focuses on care <strong>of</strong> trauma and burn-injured<br />

patients; acute wound healing; prevention <strong>of</strong> pressure ulcers and hospital-acquired infections;<br />

and translation <strong>of</strong> evidence into practice.<br />

Dr. Makic’s passion and commitment focus on ensuring nursing assessment and interventions are<br />

optimized based on current evidence and research to maximize patient comfort and outcomes.<br />

Her areas <strong>of</strong> research interest and practice improvement have focused on a diverse array <strong>of</strong><br />

nursing specific interventions with a vast amount <strong>of</strong> work in the field <strong>of</strong> pressure ulcer and skin<br />

prevention interventions. She has several active studies and quality projects in the acute care<br />

nursing practice environment.<br />

Dr. Makic graduated from the University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin, Madison with her bachelor <strong>of</strong> science<br />

in nursing in 1985, obtained her Master <strong>of</strong> Science from the University <strong>of</strong> Maryland at<br />

Baltimore in 1992, and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy, <strong>Nursing</strong>, from the University <strong>of</strong> Colorado,<br />

College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> in 2007.<br />

Connecticut<br />

baRbaRa mOYniHan, pHD, apRn, bC, aFn<br />

Barbara Moynihan is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.<br />

Dr. Moynihan is one <strong>of</strong> the pioneers <strong>of</strong> forensic nursing. She collaborated with a core group <strong>of</strong><br />

expert nurses to develop the domains and performance measures that led to the designation <strong>of</strong><br />

forensic nursing as a stand-alone area <strong>of</strong> specialization. Through her efforts over the past several<br />

decades, Dr. Moynihan has solidified the nurse’s critical role in identifying and addressing<br />

significant gaps in services and resources available to victims <strong>of</strong> Interpersonal Violence (IPV).<br />

While working as the <strong>Nursing</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> the Emergency Department at Yale New Haven<br />

Hospital, Dr. Moynihan developed the first hospital-based rape counseling unit in Connecticut.<br />

She also served on the task force that drafted the Connecticut Technical Guidelines for Health<br />

Care Response to Victims <strong>of</strong> Sexual Assault. This document remains the “gold standard” for<br />

interventions with sexual assault victims in Connecticut.<br />

Dr. Moynihan co-authored Forensic <strong>Nursing</strong>: A Handbook for Practice, now in its second printing<br />

and endorsed by Vice President Joseph Biden. Most recently, she has partnered with health<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficials in Nicaragua and Barbados to expand services to victims <strong>of</strong> Interpersonal Violence and<br />

human trafficking. Dr. Moynihan is also working with a multidisciplinary group <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

from the U.S. and abroad to centralize resources on human trafficking.<br />

Dr. Moynihan received her RN, BS and MSN degrees from Southern Connecticut State<br />

University and her PhD from the University <strong>of</strong> Connecticut.<br />

District <strong>of</strong> Columbia<br />

maRY JEan sCHUmann, Dnp, mba, Cpnp<br />

Mary Jean Schumann is the Executive Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nursing</strong> Alliance for Quality Care (NAQC)<br />

and Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at The George Washington University School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>. She also<br />

provides consultation on issues relative to nursing and health care policy, APRNs, quality,<br />

pediatric nursing and pain management.<br />

Dr. Schumann previously served at the <strong>American</strong> Nurses Association, as the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><br />

Practice and Policy and more recently as the Chief Programs Officer. She has also served as<br />

the Executive Director <strong>of</strong> the National Pediatric Nurses Certification Board and the National<br />

Organization for Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention. During that time she also<br />

provided triage and nursing visits to patients on behalf <strong>of</strong> Montgomery Hospice.
