CRACOW FACT SHEET 

Cracow: city in the south-eastern portion of Poland 

Location: Krakow lies in the southern part of Poland on the Vistula River in a valley 

at the foot of the Carpathian Plateau, 219 meters above sea level. Approximately 

300 km (190 miles) north is Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and 100 km (60 miles) 

south are the Tatra Mountains, forming the southern border of the country. The city 

covers an area of 327 sq. km, equal to 0.1% of the country's surface area. 

Population: 757,500 people. 

Language: Polish 

Religion: more than 90% profess to be Roman Catholic 

Local time: Central European Time Zone (GMT+1) 

Climate: Krakow lies in a region of temperate climate. Weather changes are 

frequent due to the friction of humid air masses arriving from the Atlantic Ocean and 

dry, continental air masses coming in from the east. The average annual 

temperature fluctuates between 6° to 10° C. July is the warmest month and January 

the coldest. Western winds, conducive to rainfall, blow in summer, whereas in winter 

there are predominantly eastern winds, decreasing the amount of precipitation

Credit cards: major credit cards are accepted. There is a well developed network 

of cash machines and the instructions are provides as well in English 

Opening hours: Banking hours Monday-Friday between 8 am and 5 pm, 

on Saturdays only some banks work and those are open between 9 am and 1 pm. 

Shops are open Monday-Friday 10 am till 7 pm. A lot of supermarkets are open 

around the clock

Mobile phones operate in GSM and DCS networks. The area code for Poland 

is 0048, for Cracow 012. 

Photo service: 1 hour photo service widely available 

Electricity: 220V/50 Hz current, European-style two-pin plugs in use 

Taxi: taxis charge according to the meter. Radio-taxi can be ordered by phone from 

any place 

Visa: Members of EU and citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and US can 

enter Poland with out a visa and stay for period of 3 months. Other nationalities may 

need to obtain visa to enter Poland in Polish consulates. Visas are not available 

at airports, or land or sea borders. 

Tax free: Tax free purchase is available in the airport upon departure 

Airport: Cracow has one international Airport, John Paul II International Airport 

Krakow-Balice, located just 11 km away from the city. It is the second largest 

international airport after Warsaw.

Cracow National Museum was first housed at the 

upper floor of the Sukiennice building, now the 

home of one of its divisions. The construction of 

the Museum's New Building at 3 Maja Street 

started in 1934, but was interrupted by World War II. It was completed only in 1992. 

The Museum collections - consisting of several hundred thousand items - are kept in 

big part in the Main Building but also in the nine of its divisions around the city. 

Currently the management of the museum rents out some of their elegant interiors

The Palace of Bishop Erazm Ciołek (1474– 

1522), a great diplomat, humanist and patron 

of the arts, was build in the Gothic and 

Renaissance style in the early years of the 16th century as one of the most superb 

residences in Cracow. In the 19th century it was taken over by the authorities of the 

Austrian occupant and turned into a dilapidating seat of government offices. The 

history of the building, its architectural values and the proximity of the Archdiocesan 

Museum rendered it the best candidate to install the National Museum’s collection of 

Polish art from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. Re-opened in 2007 

after the restoration is a great place for events. Its courtyard is available for concerts.

The house of the Szołayski family was built in Cracow in 

the 14th century and extended in the 19th and 20th 

centuries. It was willed to the National Museum in 

Cracow by Włodzimiera and Adam Szołayski in 1904, 

and made available for use in 1928. In 2003, following a 

long-drawn-out renovation project financed by the Public 

Committee for the Renovation of the Monuments of 

Cracow, the building became the seat of the Stanisław 

Wyspiański Museum, which has been in existence since 1983.The Museum is 

devoted to Stanisław Wyspiański and Feliks ‘Manggha’ Jasieński. Some of the

The Sukiennice, a huge market hall built in the 13th century in the middle of Rynek 

Główny (Main Square), enlarged in the 14th century in the Gothic style and 

remodelled in the mid-16th century after Renaissance fashion, was restored in 

1875–1879 and became the city’s showpiece facility hosting grand balls and patriotic 

celebrations. Its location and character made the rooms on the first floor of the 

Sukiennice a perfect place for the National Museum in Cracow. The arrangement 

and graphic layout of the Gallery harks back to the atmosphere of 19th-century 

showrooms. The exhibition occupies four rooms. Currently under renovation, will be 

available for organizing events again in 2009.

which houses the Exhibition and 

Conference Centre at Wawel Royal 

Castle, was erected in the second half of 

the 19th century following a design by 

the Cracovian architect Feliks 

KsięŜarski. From World War II until 1991 it housed formal apartments of the Cabinet 

Offices and then of the President of Poland.

The theatre Slowacki was inspired by one of Paris's grandest and now most 

commonly photographed buildings, Charles Garnier's Opera. The theatre was built in 

1892 by the Polish architect Jan Zawiejski. Whilst the size of the theatre may be 

modest compared to the Parisian opera house, the interior is no less exquisite. The 

stage curtain alone is a work of art, and this was painted by Henryk Siermiradzki. 

Currently the theatre can be rented for conferences, congresses and banquets. 

Banquets and galas can be organised in the foyer but as well in the audience hall 

where the chairs can be dismantled for the purpose of a gala dinner. The theatre is 

perceived as an “exclusive hall of Cracow” and the place for elite meetings.

Villa Decius is not only a beautiful Renaissance 

palace surrounded by an extensive park. Two

outbuildings, Łaski House, named after one of the friends of Justus Decius, was

The beautiful manor house on Bialy Pradnik is today a place where the Culture 

Centre “Dworek Bialopradnicki” is located. The cultural tradition of this place has its

The Conference Centre and the 16 th 

century Royal Castle in Niepołomice are 

located 25 km from Krakow city centre. 

The excellent equipment of the Conference Centre makes possible the organization

Paszkowka Palace has been associated 

with the names of Polish noble houses 

for centuries. They have completed 

building it in 1860, and it remained in 

their estate until 1940. Fortunately, the Palace did not share the fate of hundreds 

of other architectural relics and weathered out World War II intact. The year 1997 

was a turning point in the life of the Palace – it was purchased by Jan and Anna 

Oleksy who have decided, like many other proprietors of similar structures in 

Europe, to transform the Palace into a luxurious hotel serving as a conference

City Tour Cracow – exploring hidden treasures of Cracow 

The guests explore Cracow in an interesting, unique and 

active way with elements of competition. We divide the 

group into smaller groups. Each group will have its 

Patron. (for example: Copernicus, Wawel Dragon, White 

Lady etc.) Each group receives maps, guides and a list 

of questions, which they have to answer during the tour 

in order to collect points for each well done assignment. 

Looking for the Dragon of the Wawel Hill 

Tracing the most famous legend of Cracow the participants 

have to find the places – land marks of the historical city. 

Pictures will be taken during the work of the participants. 

The winning group will be awarded. 

A popular version of Smok Wawelski's (the Dragon) tale 

takes place in Kraków during the reign of King Krak, the 

city's legendary founder. Each day the evil dragon would 

beat a path of destruction across the countryside, killing the 

civilians, pillaging their homes and devouring their livestock. 

In many versions of this story, the dragon especially enjoyed 

eating young girls, and could only be appeased if the town 

folk would leave a young girl in front of its cave once a 

month. The King certainly wanted to put a stop to the 

dragon, but his bravest knights fell to its fiery breath. In the versions involving the 

sacrifice of young girls, every girl in the city was eventually sacrificed except one, the 

King's daughter Wanda. In desperation, the King promised his beautiful daughter's 

hand in marriage to anybody who could defeat the dragon. Great warriors from near 

and far fought for the prize and failed. One day, a poor cobbler's apprentice named 

Skuba (in some versions: Dratewka) accepted the challenge. He stuffed a lamb with 

sulphur and set it outside the dragon's cave. The dragon ate it and soon became 

incredibly thirsty. No amount of drinking could quell his stomach ache, and after 

swelling up from drinking half of the Vistula river, he exploded. The apprentice 

married the King's daughter as promised and they lived happily ever after. This 

legend and the famous monument of the Wawel dragon you will look for during your 

tour.

strongly recommend flights over Lesser Poland and the 

picturesque region called Jura Krakowsko - 

Częstochowska. The teams prepare the flight, 

participate in inflating balloons, fly and after that get the 

diplomas for finishing the successful flight.

vodka are shrouded in the swirling mists and 

frozen winters of Eastern Europe, and are the

The 16 th century Royal Castel in Niepolomice as an ideal place for organising 

special events in the royal atmosphere. Great interiors, very good kitchen and

Cruise on the Vistula river and meeting with the monks in the Tyniec Abbey 

The event can start with a cruise on the 

Vistula River which flows through 

Krakow. The cruise starts at the 

Grunwaldzki Bridge, ship goes under 

several bridges towards the picturesque 

Tyniec Abbey. The comfortable ship has 

one open and one covered deck.

Krakow Valley is a full-blown recreational complex centred 

around an 18-hole Championship Course on one of the biggest golf complexes in

California, the Krakow Valley Course includes a top-class Driving Range, Academy

Krakow Valley Golf & Country Club is an ideal place for active recreation for 

organizing company meetings and integration events accompanied by golf lessons. 

It hosts parties, balls, formal banquets, trade fairs, conferences, business events 

and other events. We can organise a half day horse riding session (with beginner 

classes for those who need that) and golf classes or golf tournament for the golf 

players. We can as well spend the time in the Shooting Range, designed for sports 

and recreation shooting. The Shooting Range is meant for sports and recreation 

shooting, both for static and dynamic shooting techniques. The facility has five firing 

posts for handguns (25 m long) and five firing posts for rifles (50 m long). Guests are 

accompanied by the instructor who takes the full responsibility for the security. The 

indoor shooting range is open all-year round.

Knights duel in the Korzkiew Castle and the trip to Ojcowski National Park 

Korzkiew Castle can be a great place to organize a knights’ duel show followed by 

festive style dinner in the castle courtyard either in the ballrooms of this restored 

medieval stronghold or in summer in the castle's courtyard, as well as the terrain of 

the picturesque Korzkiew Park. The setting is ideally suited to open-air parties,

The visit to the salt mine in Wieliczka can be

there are a lot of other attractions which wait 

for you there starting with a salt carving 

show or competitions, meeting with 

legendary persons known from the legends 

about Cracow, boat transfer in the Jozef 

Pilsudski Chamber or rewarding the guests 

with diplomas and titles of the Honorary 

Guest of the mine, not mentioning of course organising a great gala dinner in one of 

the beautiful chambers. 

Trip to Polish Winter Capital-Zakopane 

Two-hour drive takes you to a completely different world. The further to the south the 

more hilly the landscape becomes until you get to Zakopane, located 1000 m above 

sea level and surrounded by Tatra Mountains. We will go with a Funicular to 

Gubałówka hill which gives a beautiful view over Polish and Czech Tatras. Over

there fun ride in the horse sledges and than back down to Krupówki Street. A bit 

time for shopping - friendly street vendors will follow you offering local goods /lambwool 

sweaters, walking sticks, wooden figures/ at incredibly low prices. Bargaining in 

Polish is a real fun. And you will soon learn how to count in Polish! After that, lunch 

in a typical highlanders restaurant “Karcma po Zboju”
