Corporate Social Responsibility K E G A L L E P L A N T A T I O N S P L C 2 0 0 9 We believe that Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept that changes and evolves continuously. We also have come to believe that within our development programme our first obligation is to focus social responsibility policy and practice on the people that we deal directly – mainly employees, shareholders, customers and communities in which we operate. This does not mean that we have set boundaries in our areas of operation. It is simply a matter of establishing and adhering to priorities. Estate Skill Development - Employees Training of Tappers and Pluckers is being carried out to improve the production and quality. Social Welfare programmes are held on Drug awareness, Child abuse and Cash Management on all estates. Community Development Several extents of land were released from our estates to Water Supply and Drainage Board for water supply schemes to provide water, for temples, cemeteries, villagers etc. Clearing of surroundings and renovation of wards are undertaken annually at the Government Hospitals. The Company provided in-house training on Information Technology to undergraduate students of University of Colombo. Health and Welfare The assistance we give the workers/staff towards medical facilities, welfare activities, cultural and religious functions, sports etc. include providing necessary goods/materials and technical inputs. Many programmes are being conducted on worker housing, medical care, welfare and crèche activities. The Plantations Human Development Trust together with the staff attached to the Health and Welfare Division of our estates conduct these programmes with a view to uplift health and sanitation levels in our estates. Beneficiaries under these programmes are the workers and staff of the estates, their dependents and the villagers. Health camps are organised on estates in collaboration with the PHI, Health Department, MOH officials and various other organisations paying much attention to health of the workers, specially mothers and children. The Health Development Staff in the estates with the assistance of Plantation Human Development Trust make concerted effort in conducting these camps to be of use to all concerned. 12 Some of these Health camps conducted are on the following subjects:- Awareness Programmes on HIV, AIDS Diabetic Oral Cancer Dental Clinic Blood Donations Eye Clinics providing spectacles Anti Natal/Poly clinics to advise pregnant mothers During the year two medical camps were conducted in Yataderiya and Parambe estates with the assistance of Plantations Human Development Trust. In collaboration with the Plantation Human Development Trust the estates undertake re-roofing of lines, supply of equipment to maternity wards, upgrading staff quarters and constructions of new staff quarters. Child Development and Welfare With the assistance of Plantation Human Development Trust, Crèches are upgraded in all the estates to provide better shelter for workers’ children. In some crèches children are provided with mid day meals. The staff welfare societies of the estates conduct various programmes for the children of the resident workers and in some instances children of the villagers too participate. Some estates organized programmes on Children’s Day and distributed exercise books, stationery etc. To educate the workers and employees on child rights and the parents’ responsibility, estates conduct programmes with the assistance of the Divisional Secretary. Community Service The staff and workers of the estates participate in ‘shramadana’ campaigns-cleaning and repairing village roads, cleaning adjoining town areas, cleaning of wards of the government hospitals, donating funds, goods etc. With the funds provided by the Asian Development Bank and the Plantation Development Project, estates completed first phase of the tarring and concreting of estates roads leading to villages and worker houses.
With the assistance of Gramasewaka’s, Mobile Identity Card Services are conducted to help the estate workers to obtain their National Identity Cards. Employee Safety All the factories in the estates and other work places are equipped with necessary implements to maintain the safety standards required. Educational programmes are conducted to enlighten the employees of the need to take precautionary measures and to become aware of the various issues relating to work place safety. Forestry Management Forestry Management is an ongoing programme that would help the estates in attaining self sufficiency in fuel wood and also provide the country with the forest cover. Environment protection In the estates which we have rubber factories, a well managed effluent treatment plant is constructed in order to mitigate pollution from rubber effluent. Employment Opportunities Employment opportunities are offered to staff / workers’ children. Corporate Social Responsibilities Contd.... K E G A L L E P L A N T A T I O N S P L C 2 0 0 9 13 Sports Activities Inter estates Volley Ball and Cricket tournaments are conducted every year with the assistance of the Head office. Co-operative movements All the estates have the Estate Workers Co-operative Societies functioning. With the advice of the Superintendent most of the workers enroll themselves in this society. Through this society various types of financial assistance including short term loans are given with minimum security requirement as distress / housing loan etc. Goods and equipment are given on easy payment scheme through this society. In some estates Computer Training Centres are set up to assist the children of the workers to gain computer knowledge. Assistance for Higher Studies The Commpany assist children of the employees who pursue higher education in the national universities. The assistance is worth Rs. 1,500/- per month and it is payable during the period of study. So far several children have been benefited by this scheme and among them few have completed their studies and are gainfully employed.
