Hen Or gOBBler?
Only bearded wild turkeys may
be taken during the spring
season. This regulation helps
protect female turkeys during
the nesting period. Yes, some
hens do have beards, but they
represent only 3–6% of the
female population.
Although few hens are
taken, their loss reduces the
reproductive potential of the
population.
That loss is avoidable, if you
remember these tips:
feature gOBBler Hen
Head red, blue and white colors blue-gray color
Body dark, brown-black light, rusty-brown
Beard long bristle-like beard usually no beard
Spurs usually ½-inch or longer spurs usually no spurs
Calls gobble, drum yelp, cluck, cut
Strut strut with tail fan and wing droop no strut
Size larger than hen ½ to ⅔ size of gobbler
