GLASS, fOR LIfE… As I write this, at the end of Portland’s 2008 “summer of glass,” I find myself wondering where my own life has gone. A year of preparations for the Glass Art Society conference; over two years in planning for the Klaus Moje retrospective at the Portland Art Museum; visits in June from over two thousand artists, students, teachers, dealers, collectors and museum staff; and tours for scores of national and international collectors haven’t left much breathing room. now that we’re moving into fall, I’m finding myself equally breathless. In november (2008) the Bullseye Gallery will pick up where our Resource Center Gallery left off—by bringing a lineup of e-merge artists to SOFA Chicago. There, alongside the acknowledged masters in our field, we’ll present a selection of e-merge artists from the past five years. One of those e-merge finalists is this catalog’s cover artist. Shane Caryl’s cast figure of “Bernini’s Batman” amazed me the moment I first saw it during the preliminary jurying. The quality of the casting combined with the novelty and personality of the message stopped me in my tracks. The foresight, planning, and technical savvy that it takes to work successfully in this particular glass discipline is nothing less than inspiring. And inspirational is what I expect our next Bullseye conference to be. BECon 2009 will focus on the technical and aesthetic challenges of kilncasting.
