September 2007. Why did you start this business? I started this business after speaking with friends who own and manage businesses in the area about their human resourcesrelated challenges. I realized that I could be a strategic resource and business partner for them and other local businesses. Additionally, I have worked for large organizations in the Chicago area, and I am excited to focus my efforts and use my expertise locally. How did you get into this line of work? I started working in hospitality management, which developed my love for people and managing the challenges they can present. This translated into a successful management career working in Over the next few weeks, retail activity will be at its highest level of the year. Though it may be hard to believe, many merchants will experience as much as 50 percent of their sales and more than 25 percent of profits during this period. It’s quite ironic, then, that in the midst of all the good cheer, some turn to trouble. At this time of year, in an effort to be helpful to all, we should look at the problem of shoplifting. I hope to help merchants by raising awareness of this problem, and I hope to spare potential shoplifters the pain of possibly ruining their lives through a senseless act during a senseless moment. According to the FBI, shoplifting is one of the nation’s fastest-growing crimes, increasing at the alarming rate of 20 percent a year. As one might suspect, the majority occurs during the holiday season. The National Retail Merchants Association estimates that annual shoplifting losses and employee theft — in other words, internal shoplifting — amounts to nearly $25 billion a year. About half of the losses occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which means December is prime time for shoplifters. Employee theft and shoplifting account for the largest source of property crime committed annually in our country. The remainder of annual retail losses are attributed to paperwork errors and vendor theft. The highest losses are suffered on Saturdays, while Sundays show the least losses. The hardest-hit retailers are auto-parts shops, book stores, consumer electronics retailers, department stores and discount stores. Store officials say they catch shoplifters who come from all walks of life. They say they have caught doctors, lawyers, teachers, members of the cler- human resources, and assisting employers and employees navigate employment challenges and the ever-changing laws. Here are some other statistics that may surprise you: Most shoplifters (99 percent) that are apprehended have enough money on them when caught to pay for the stolen merchandise. 55 percent of all thefts are committed by middle-income people; another 20 percent by so-called high-income people. The primary shoplifting demographic is teenagers; teenage girls out-shoplift teenage boys by a margin of 4-to-1. 58 percent of all shoplifters are female; 25 percent of all shoplifting crimes committed by housewives. 80 percent of all shoplifters are caught in suburban stores, rather than in urban locations. It is estimated that one in every 10 customers shoplifts, causing each American family to spend $300 per year to subsidize what shoplifters steal. Onethird of all new businesses fail due to theft. Store-security costs add over 10 percent to the prices we pay for goods and services. Therefore, shoplifters are not stealing from brick-and-mortar stores — they are stealing from us all.
