AAA suggests
alcohol-free alternatives
MADISON — As a way to help prevent
drunk-driving deaths and injuries during the
holiday season, AAA Wisconsin is offering the
public a free booklet of nonalcoholic drink
recipes.
The 2007 edition of AAA Wisconsin’s Great
Pretenders Party Guide features some of the
best nonalcoholic drink recipes gathered from
AAA’s Diamond Award-winning restaurants
throughout the Midwest.
According to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, in 2006 more than
17,600 people in the United States died as a
result of alcohol-related traffic crashes.
In Wisconsin in 2005, alcohol was a factor in
more than 40 percent of all traffic fatalities.
According to the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, of the 801 traffic-crash fatalities
in Wisconsin during
2005, 330 were
alcohol-related.
“The holiday season
should be a time of
joy and celebration,
but tragically each
year it becomes a
time of grief for the
loved ones of those
killed and injured in
alcohol-related traffic
crashes,” AAA
Wisconsin Regional
President Tom
Frymark said in a
news release. “These
tragedies are preventable
if we will all
choose positive alternatives
to drinking
and driving.”
To emphasize the
drunk-driving problem,
the Great
Pretenders Guide
includes charts and
information about
how alcohol affects
drivers. There also
are tips for helping
party hosts monitor
alcohol consumption
and deal with guests
who drink too much.
In addition to alternative
beverage ideas,
the guide also has
information for party
hosts on trendy new
food items.
To obtain free
copies of the Great
Pretenders Party
Guide, visit any AAA
