2009 Lincoln MKS: With its Town Car now primarily reserved for fleet<br />
duty, Lincoln is readying a brand new luxury sedan that’s scheduled<br />
for a summer 2008 launch. The MKS will, not unexpectedly, arrive with<br />
a full “suite” of standard and available content, including optional allwheel-drive.<br />
The sole powerplant will be a 270-horsepower 3.7-liter V6<br />
backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Pricing is expected to<br />
start south of $38,000.<br />
IT’S HISTORY<br />
★ Between 1956 and ’58, a number of manufacturers<br />
began adding newly developed items such as power door looks,<br />
remotely adjustable outside mirrors and day/night rearview mirrors to<br />
their optional equipment lists.<br />
★ Beware of termites! Until 1927, all cars produced at the Franklin<br />
factory in Syracuse, N.Y., featured a wooden chassis.<br />
W HAT’S UP, AUTO DOC?<br />
The Auto Doc recently shared some evidence indicating that brake<br />
fluid should be periodically changed for maximum consistent performance.<br />
This week, he has another observation, this time about ambient<br />
temperature. Braking from 60 m.p.h. to zero on a 70 F day<br />
took as long as 189 feet after five consecutive stops. On a<br />
36-degree day, 145 feet after seven stops. On both days,<br />
the braking baselines were about the same at 123-125<br />
feet. The consensus is that ambient air on the 36-degree<br />
day helped the brakes cool faster between the stops<br />
(about 35 seconds on average as the test computer was<br />
reset and the vehicle, a 2000 Ford Lightning SVT pickup, was brought<br />
back up to speed), reducing the effects of heat soak on the rotors and<br />
the brake fluid. Forty-four feet — as much as three car lengths — difference<br />
in distance due to a 35 F difference ambient temperature is<br />
astounding and should be taken into account<br />
