19 COLLARDS Collards (Hybrid) — Listed by Maturity 0976 Bulldog F1 Relative Variety Days Leaf Type / Color Characteristics 0976 Bulldog F1 71 Dark Green / Slightly Savoyed This hybrid is a fancier Georgia type. Yield potential is high, with very good uniformity. It has an upright plant habit. Bolt resistant. 0959 Top Bunch F1 71 Medium Green / Slightly Savoyed Generally earlier and more uniform than OP’s. Appearance in between Vates and Georgia. Tall, semi-erect plant. Leaves regrow quickly after harvest. 0957 Flash F1 73 Dark Green / Smooth Vates type. The slowest of our collards to bolt, it allows growers repeated heavy harvests. Good for stripping and bunching. 0956 Hi Crop F1 73 Blue, Green / Semi-Smooth Known for having large, heavy, and tasty (non-bitter) leaves. Plants are medium tall and upright, (18 - 26"). Tolerant to heat and cold and slow bolting. Very slow to bolt. 0955 Champion 75 Dark Green / Slightly Savoyed Longer standing, taller, and shorter stemmed than Vates. Uniform, vigorous, leaves have the same color as Vates but are somewhat thicker. 0963 Georgia Southern 75 Blue Green / Slightly Savoyed This old standard has erect, spreading 36 inch plants with large cabbage-like, juicy leaves that are blue-green and slightly crumpled. Tolerant to heat and poor soil, slow to bolt and very rapid growing. SWEET CORN Sweet Corn Types 1. Standard (SU) SU’s are the oldest type of sweet corn with rapid conversion of sugar to starch after peak maturity or harvest. 2. Sugary Enhanced (SE) and (SE-SE) SE varieties have a modifying gene which increases the original levels of sugars in the kernels and extends their flavor. Moisture loss is also slower than normal SU’s and tenderness is improved. The result is a sweeter, more tender kernel with good corn flavor that will retain its quality longer. These corns are best suited for local or one day shipments. These SE corns can be either “fully sugary enhanced” homozygous (both parents carry the SE gene) or SE “partially sugary enhanced” heterozygous (only one\parent carries the SE gene). 3. Synergistic (SE-SH2) These varieties are generally comprised of 25% SH2 kernel and 75% SE kernels on the cob. They are utilized primarily to increase sugar levels in the SU/SE types while maintaining the tender pericarp and creamy texture of SE types. 4. Super Sweet (Sh2) “Super sweets” or “Extra sweets” have a shrunken (sh) gene, a name that describes the light-weight, wrinkled seed of this group. This gene raises original levels of complex sugars even further, again extending their flavor by slowing conversion to simpler sugars and finally to starch. Moisture is also retained in this type and shelf life is remarkably long. They should be isolated from all other corn types to ensure sweetness, tenderness and flavor as well as to prevent tough, starchy kernels. Distances of about 250 ft. upwind, with at least a 14 day difference in maturity keep contamination to a minimum.
