What is new in Epidemiology? • ACCESS study (Baughman et al, AJRCCM 2001) (a case control etiologic study of sarcoidosis) -enrolled 736 patients within 6 months of diagnosis at 10 ctrs in the US -same number of age, sex, race matched controls -follow-up of first 240 patients <strong>for</strong> 2 years • Peak age 35-45 yr, one third >55 yr, women older • Blacks: more extrathoracic, more severe lung disease • Women: higher incidence <strong>for</strong> EN, ocular, neurological disease • Occupational and environmental exposure with increased risk: -musty odors, insecticides, air conditioning, raising birds -employment in agriculture, teaching, and others -smoking: strong negative predictor
