Degree & Certificate Courses Degree BAS / The & Certificate Learning Courses Center Continuing Education BTC Info 14 BASIC ACADEMIC SKILLS What is offered in Basic Academic Skills? • Learning Center classes in basic reading, writing, and math, GED preparation, Accuplacer preparation, computer literacy, and ESL. Instructional methods include individual, group, and computer-aided instruction. • English as a Second Language classes at all levels. • I-BEST programs that allow students to start preparing for their career while still working on their GED, basic skills, or ESL. Who can enroll in Basic Academic Skills? Anyone who is 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in high school who needs instruction in reading, writing, math, or ESL below the level of high school competition is eligible to enroll. What is the cost? Tuition of $25.00 per quarter is required for ALL ABE, GED, and ESL classes. How do I enroll in The Learning Center? Step 1 ORIENTATION Orientation includes program expectations, goal setting, and college awareness. Allow 3 hours for each orientation session. Call the Learning Center 360-752-8341, to sign up for orientation. Step 2 CASAS ASSESSMENT This test provides information about your reading and math or listening skills that will help the instructor meet your needs. Call 360-752-8341 to schedule. Step 3 CLASS ATTENDANCE Regular attendance and progress toward your goals are expected. Required Orientation/Testing/Registration for Essential Math, Essential Reading & Essential Writing June 8 12:00p-3:00p B-7D Essential Math ABE 050 A math course designed for students who need better math skills to pass the GED math test or Accuplacer arithmetic test or to progress to Pre-Algebra. This course is intended to reinforce and extend students’ knowledge of basic mathematics and to build the foundation for success in beginning algebra. Topics covered include basic operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions; understanding and application of ratio, proportion and percent; elements of geometry, problem solving, and signed numbers; and solving simple equations. The course is designed to use interactive software and a variety of classroom strategies. Prerequisite: CASAS Math score of 211. $25.00 Item#:2583 MTWTh 7/2-8/9 Brannon Location:B 7D 12:00p-3:00p 6 Vocabulary Development I ABE 061 This course will help students improve their reading comprehension for academic purposes by offering lessons and exercises using the Academic Word List, a list of the most frequently used academic words in the English language. Students will analyze words and their usage and generate writing using the vocabulary words. A goal of understanding academic vocabulary with low amout of context is the focus of this course. Included are navigating Microsoft Windows, word processing with Microsoft Word, and use of common software for spreadsheets and multimedia presentations. Emphasis is on functioning in situations related to immediate needs and tasks in which basic reading, writing and oral communication skills are necessary. Summer 2012 GED PREPARATION & TESTING GED Testing BTC offers GED testing to those who are eligible from our community. Note: The Assessment Center has temporarily relocated to Morse Center 212. Individuals arriving for testing are to park in the visitor lot in front of the College Services Building, sign in for parking and then walk over to Morse Center. Maps are available. GED candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those less than 19 years of age must bring a completed Request for Approval to Test form (available at high schools) signed by the designated employee at their former high school, usually the principal or assistant principal. Candidates must also present government issued photo identification before testing. There is a $75 fee for the five tests, payable to the BTC Cashier, College Services Building. There is a $10 fee per exam for retesting if required. You must submit a written cancellation request prior to taking 1st test for a 100% refund. No refunds after one or more tests have been taken. Contact Admissions & Advising at 360-752-8345 for more information, or to sign up for each test at least one day in advance of testing. Four or five appointments are usually needed to complete testing. (Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Writing). Reading and Social Studies may be taken during the same test session. Math cannot be the first test taken. Note: You will need to arrive 30 minutes early on the day of the first test session to complete additional paperwork. Tuition for ABE, GED & ESL Classes Tuition of $25.00 per quarter is required for ALL BAS, ABE, GED, and ESL classes. GED Testing Schedule Mondays 1:00 pm 2 nd Tuesday of each month 5:30 pm Wednesdays 1:00 pm Thursdays 9:00 am Those who need testing accommodations should meet with the BTC Disability Support Services Coordinator in advance.
