Gale Adcock, MSN, BSN, was elected in October 2007 to the 7 member Cary Town Council for a<br />

4-year term. Cary is one <strong>of</strong> the fastest growing municipalities in the state with a (current)<br />

population <strong>of</strong> 134,000. In February she moderated U.S. Representatives David Price’s Town Hall<br />

meeting held in Cary. Many <strong>of</strong> you know <strong>of</strong> Gale’s numerous contributions to NCNA and her<br />

tireless efforts related to nurse practitioner issues. She is a UNC-CH graduate <strong>of</strong> 1987 (a FNP),<br />

and since 1994 has been the Director <strong>of</strong> SAS Corporate Health Services. She holds an adjunct<br />

faculty appointment at ECU (2009) and at Duke in addition to UNC-CH.<br />

Awards in 2008<br />

Amy Coghill, RN, MSN, OCN, received national certification as a Clinical Nurse<br />

Leader (CNL) after successful completion <strong>of</strong> the CNL exam in January.<br />

Leslie Davis, MSN, RN, ANC-P, in December was named as a member <strong>of</strong> the Clinical Expert<br />

Review Panel <strong>of</strong> the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for Prevention Quality<br />

Indicators for Diabetes Mellitus, Acute Conditions and Chronic Conditions.<br />

• Leslie also received the President’s Award from the UNC-CH <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Alumni<br />

Association for Extraordinary Service towards Education and Fellowship in September,<br />

2008.<br />

• Leslie was the recipient <strong>of</strong> the Jane Smith Scholarship for Doctoral Study in<br />

Cardiovascular <strong>Nursing</strong> at UNC-CH SON for 2006-2007; 2007-2008; and 2008-2009.<br />

Sharron Docherty, PhD, CPNP and co-authors were awarded the 2008 Donna LK. Wong Writer’s<br />

Award from Pediatric <strong>Nursing</strong> for their manuscript: Docherty, S.L., & Miles, M.S., & Brandon, D.<br />

(2007). Searching for “the dying point”: Providers’ experiences with palliative care in pediatric<br />

acute care. Pediatric <strong>Nursing</strong>, 33 (4), 335-341.<br />

Lynn Farber, RN, MSN, CPNP-AC, PC, won a national award this year, entitled “The Founders<br />

Award”. The Founders Award recognizes nursing excellence among the membership <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association. The award recipient is selected based upon his<br />

or her significant contribution to the care <strong>of</strong> pediatric surgical patients.<br />

• Lynn was awarded the “James Emonson North Carolina Children’s Honour Award” this year<br />

for best representing the spirit and mission <strong>of</strong> the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
