Port Royal
Port Royal is a relatively new development on the eastern tip of
Queensborough that is an example of the direction communities will
be planned and built in the future.
The main theme of Port Royal is a community with various housing
types and a riverfront atmosphere. There exists a mixture of low-rise
apartments, townhouses, and single-family homes. The next phase of
this development will feature row housing and cluster homes, one of
the first of its kind in the Lower Mainland.. These forms of singlefamily
dwellings are very land efficient and are found extensively in
Eastern North America, but new to the Lower Mainland.
To compensate for small or absent garden space the Queensborough
community has established a community garden in Port Royal. The
community garden has individual plots that can be rented by
residents who wish to grow fruits or vegetables but are unable to on
their own property (see Port Royal Community Garden, page 62).
Extensive walking and bike paths promote non-motorized transport.
A community green, extensive viewpoints, and access to the Fraser
River help this development remain as environmentally friendly as
possible.
