dominated by low-density housing. Single-family houses and houses
converted to two units comprise 63% of the total housing units in the
area. Apartments and townhouses account for only 23% of the areas
housing units. As outlined in the Official Community Plan, future
development of this area will be focused towards a medium density,
pedestrian friendly neighbourhood taking advantage of the 22 nd St
SkyTrain station.
Health Care
As the “hub” of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, New
Westminster is an important centre for medical services to the region.
Currently there are two major hospitals and one care centre located
within New Westminster: Royal Columbian Hopsital and Saint Mary’s
Hospital, as well as the Queen’s Park Care Centre. However, the future
of St. Mary’s Hospital is uncertain due to recent plans by the Provincial
government to withdraw funding support. Hospitals provide a sense of
security and importance to the community as well as providing many
jobs. Royal Columbian Hospital is the largest employer in New
Westminster, with over 3000 employees. Both Saint Mary’s and Queen’s
Park Care Centre are also among the top ten employers in the City.
