Albert Bartee) [1955-1956] In 1956, when Toni Harper was just eighteen years old, she made her first album for
Norman Granz’s Verve, the label he had started earlier that year. For her debut Harper, who had already made an
impact as an almost-baby singer, was backed by none other than Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Alvin
Stoller. On display were all the traits that had made her a success: a good voice, a knack for swing, and brilliant
intonation. This fine release also includes two recordings she did with Dizzy Gillespie, four tunes issued on two
singles with an orchestra under the direction of Buddy Bregman; two tracks from her appearance on the TV show
Stars of Jazz, and one last song arranged and conducted by Marty Paich. [Item Code: 67022 CD: $17.00]
[1959] Having this CD in your hands, you must be ready to listen two of the best albums pianist Oscar Peterson
recorded. On ‘Swinging Brass’ with Oscar Peterson a fresh setting is added to the vitality of the trio work by the
imaginative writing of versatile arranger Russ Garcia. In his work with Peterson, he managed to integrate the trio
and the brass seamlessly at the highest level of playing. Given material like this, and backed by Ray Brown and
Ed Thigpen, Peterson is bound to come up with something startling, which is exactly what he does. [Item Code:
engaging collection of performances from three albums the Oscar Peterson Trio devoted to three well-known Broadway
shows. ‘My Fair Lady’ was recorded in 1958, in the interval between the departure of guitarist Herb Ellis and
the arrival of drummer Ed Thigpen. Occupying the drum chair for this date is Gene Gammage, who fits in seamlessly
with the peerless Ray Brown. Thigpen comes in for the remaining albums, ‘Porgy and Bess’ (1959) and ‘Fiorello’
(1960) and locks into place one of the greatest of all the Peterson trios. [Item Code: 67024 2-CD: $26.00]
Taylor, Lex Humphries) [1959] Columbus Calvin Pearson Jr., better known as Duke Pearson, set great store by lyricism
and flowing, effortless swing every time he played. He was equally adept when scoring his own compositions
or setting the work of others. This brilliant pianist was not afraid of unabashed romanticism, a quality very much in
evidence throughout his improvisations on these trio performances and expressed through his gentle, warm, almost
sensuous touch. Alongside him, bassist Gene Taylor’s work is unfailingly impeccable, and Lex Humphries provides
ample confirmation of his reputation as a sensitive, thoroughly reliable drummer. The interaction within the group is
at all times of the highest level in a virtually flawless demonstration of the art of reflective, many-faceted jazz piano
trio playing. [Item Code: 67025 CD: $17.00]
639 BARBARA CARROLL TRIO PLAYS STANDARDS PLUS ‘FUNNY FACE’ AND OTHER GERSHWIN TUNES
The Trolley Song • I’ve Grown Accustomed To His Face • Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries • It Might As Well Be
Spring • Will You Still Be Mine? • Love Is Just Around The Corner • Easy Living • Happy To Make Your Acquaintance
• Blues For Blue Eyes • Let’s Kiss And Make Up • Funny Face • He Loves And She Loves • ‘S Wonderful • How
Long Has This Been Going On? • Clap Yo’ Hands • Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off • Someone To Watch Over Me
• Who Cares? • They Can’t Take That Away From Me • Love Is Here To Stay • They All Laughed (Personnel: Joe
Shulman, Bill Faite, Joe Petti) [1957] This CD presents the two albums The Barbara Carroll Trio recorded for the
Verve label in 1957. On the first, ‘Barbara,’ she confines herself to piano on a selection of familiar standards, with
a strong leaning towards slow ballads. Relaxed and refreshingly at ease, she leisurely explores the tonal colours
suggested by the material in a reflective approach to trio playing. The second album presents six songs from ‘Funny
Face,’ along with six from several Gershwin shows. With Joe Shulman on bass, and Joe Petti on drums, the trio’s
approach displays a blend of imagination, taste, touch, and swing. And though Barbara Carroll was by no means
an innovator or trailblazer, she was a talented performer with a distinctive musical personality that enabled her to
do justice to her repertoire and communicate musically with the listeners - attractive and hardly minor gifts at any
level of music. [Item Code: 67026 CD: $17.00]
