1940] When Columbia Records released the Minneapolis’ after hours recordings of Charlie Christian, the listener
was warned, ‘The technical quality of these selections is admittedly inferior to the commercial recordings.’ Not
anymore. New digital transfers from the original acetates restore the sound quality. Dating from 1939-40, Christian
leaps into the room with his driving rhythm guitar and ultra-modern solos. [Item Code: 66962 CD: $16.00]
Records Party) [1957-1961] Alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce’s last ensemble was an outstanding sextet called the
‘Orchtette’ that featured trumpeter Richard Williams, vibraphonist Eddie Costa and pianist Richard Wyands. Active
during 1960-61, the band has only been documented up to now on five tracks of of an LP for the Mercury label. This
new Uptown CD provides further fascinating examples of the ‘Orch-tette’ recorded in performance at Birdland and
in two studio sessions from which nothing was ever released. Within a year, he had left the jazz world never to be
seen again. These recordings not only provide high quality music in the hard-bop genre but also serve as important
and revealing additions to Gryce’s legacy. [Item Code: 66963 CD: $16.00]
[1974-1975] The East Bay City Jazz Band was formed in 1970 by Robin Verdier, pianist, and Walter Schwab,
at a time when the New England area was realizing a significant growing interest in Trad Jazz. The leadoff tune,
‘London Blues’ is a seldom heard tune, in spite of the fact that documents show 59 recordings since it was written
in 1923. The second and third tunes showcase the excellent vocal style of Jane Campedelli. From the hard driving
arrangement of ‘Black Bottom Stomp’ to the superb rendition of the blues ‘Skit Dat De Dat’ this is traditional jazz
at its best. [Item Code: 66942 CD: $14.00]
tribute to Frank King in the only way that musicians can pay tribute - by making and listening to good music. The
second LP, ‘Repercussion’, has two of the greatest showman drummers of this day and age: America’s Louie Bellson
and Britain’s Eric Delaney. From their friendship sprung this remarkable album, which must surely be acclaimed
as a landmark in drumming, and which will be regarded as a classic in jazz recording. [Item Code: 67156 2-CD:
Condon, Keith Christie, Stan Tracey, Lennie Bush, Ronnie Stephenson, Eddie Blair, Ian Hamer, Don Lusher, Maurice
Platt, Jackie Armstrong, Bob Efford, Duncan Lamont, Ronnie Ross, Arthur Watts, More) The first LP, ‘Just Friends’,
with Paul Gonsalves and Tubby Hayes, is a recording session that was brought about mainly by mutual admiration
- mutual admiration of two top tenor saxophonists, each for the other. The scores are, except for one tune, original
manuscripts by British musicians - so too are all the arrangements. The second LP, ‘London Swings’, by the Johnny
Scott Orchestra, is a London musical collection, which leans heavily on the music hall tradition, but the programme
is spiced with a few more recent songs and also some themes are composed by Johnny Scott himself for the occasion.
