442 VARIOUS ARTISTS COWBOY CROONERS: SING SONGS OF THE WEST 2-CD set. Over an hour-and-a-half of 1940s vintage radio
transcriptions featuring a host of country and western crooners. Although the sweet vocal style was popularized
by the likes of the decidedly urbane Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, the rural sound of the American West also
boasted a fair number of honey-toned singers, as the 40 tracks on Cowboy Crooners Sing Songs of the West aptly
demonstrate. Many, if not all of these readings hail from Melody Roundup, a 15-minute program that aired daily
for American service men and women over the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). [Item Code: 51037 2-CD:
$15.50] was $26.00
1009 GENE AUTRY AT THE MELODY RANCH This album compiles excerpts of WLS’s National Barn Dance
shows on WLS radio during the ‘40s, including the premiere Gene Autry radio program of January 1, 1940, in
which he re-enacted his first memorable meeting with Will Rogers. [Item Code: 31670 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1031 JEANETTE MacDONALD THE DARLING DIVA [1944-1945] Jeanette MacDonald is so inextricably
linked with Nelson Eddy that people forget what a great singer she was in her own right. Features solo vocal work,
mostly taken from 1944 and 1945 “America Music Loves Best” broadcasts. [Item Code: 37700 CD: $8.50] was
$13.00
1032 SISTER ROSETTA THARPE SPIRITUALS IN RHYTHM Sister Rosetta Tharpe never recorded anything that wasn’t at the least joyous. For
the seasoned Tharpe fan this CD is a delightful surprise. Although she doesn’t really solo on guitar, she does play
on every track, and her voice is spirited. She uplifts some gospel standards, and sounds as preachy as ever backed
by a small choir, on several cuts. One guesses these sides were recored somewhere between 1959 or early 60’s.
[Item Code: 37694 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1034 THE HOOSIER HOT SHOTS HAVIN’ FUN WITH THE HOOSIER HOTSHOTS There’s no way you
can listen to the Hoosier Hotshots and not have fun—before Spike Jones, before Homer & Jethro, Otto Gabe Ward
and brothers Paul “Hezzie” and Ken “Rudy” Trietsch invented cornball musical humor with an astonishing array of
musical instruments and silly voices. [Item Code: 37695 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1035 LOUIS JORDAN JUMPIN’ AND JIVIN’ AT JUBILEE [1943-1944] The material on this collection was
culled from two live recordings made by Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 for the Armed Forces Radio Service in 1943
and 1944. It includes many of his most popular songs, some of which remain favorites on the novelty-nostalgia
circuit -- “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby” (presented here in two versions, one sung by the delightful Ida James)
and “Five Guys Named Moe” are among those. Because these are live recordings, they also feature charmingly hammy jive-talk exchanges between
Jordan and emcee Ernie “Bubbles” Whitman before each track. In case you think he and his band are lacking in the
chops department, listen to them rip through Dizzy Gillespie’s “Rebop” at the end of this program. [Item Code:
37701 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1036 VAUGHN MONROE RACING WITH THE MOON 13 tracks featuring Vaughn on valve trombone and
on vocals both solo and with the Moon Maids. [Item Code: 37699 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1037 HAL McINTYRE ‘S WONDERFUL [1946] From The Century Room at the Hotel Commodore in New
York City—Hal McIntyre! Hal was the first musician Glenn Miller hired for his band back in 1937, and four years
later, when McIntyre decided to go out on his own, Glenn bankrolled him, confident that his alto sax mastery would
translate into success. Which it sure did, and this May 8, 1946 captures the band at its peak, back from touring our
military bases in Europe. [Item Code: 37697 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1038 TOMMY TUCKER IT’S TOMMY TUCKER TIME Live from the Starlight Room at the Hotel Astor in New
York City. [Item Code: 37696 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1039 JOHNNY MERCER SONGSMITH FROM SAVANNAH Johnny Mercer’s Songsmith From Savannah features
12 of the master songsmith’s best compositions. It’s a brief collection of Mercer material, probably from the
‘50s and taken from transcriptions or perhaps even an original LP issue. Anyone with a strong interest in Mercer’s
playful, charming vocals, however, might like to check this one out: backed by a small, faithful combo, he lays
back on these cuts and provides innumerable tweaks on the songs his fans knew back and forth in their original
versions. Helen O’Connell guests on “Accentuate the Positive” (just before a nice, uncredited sax solo), then takes
“Moon River” and “Autumn Leaves” by herself. Bobby Troup stops by to duet on a rare Mercer penning, “Jamboree
Jones”. [Item Code: 37685 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1040 GENE AUSTIN SINGER AND SONGWRITER Collection features Gene both solo and fronting a band.
This Gene Austin collection consists of 11 undated recordings, possibly from the late ‘40s, considering that he includes
“Careless Hands” and “Sunflower”. Virtually all of the rest are his own songs, most in a vaguely country &
western style. His ‘30s persona was a mixture of urbane and folksy. Austin’s voice is as bemused and understated
as it was during his hitmaking era, and though he can’t hit all of the high notes, he does spend some time in the
upper register, halfway between a croon and a yodel. He also reprises two of his biggest hits of the ‘30s, “My Blue
Heaven” and “The Lonesome Road” (the latter also composed by him but based on a spiritual). [Item Code: 37693
CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1041 BEN BERNIE THE OLD MAESTRO [1942] This show hails from Ben Bernie’s last radio series, sponsored
by Wrigley’s Chewing Gum. [Item Code: 40222 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1042 JANET BLAIR LOVE IS THE THING Material from the Command Performance and Mail Call shows
on the Armed Forces Radio Service. Includes a bonus live performance of “I Hear Bluebirds” with the Hal Kemp
Orchestra from Sandusky, Ohio in 1940. [Item Code: 40254 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1043 BILLY BUTTERFIELD RECIPE FOR ROMANCE [1947] Live recording from Donahue’s Club in Mountain
View, New Jersey on Groundhog Day. [Item Code: 40239 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
1044 MINDY CARSON SINGS SONGS OF LOVE Sparkling radio transcriptions from one of the great, lost
big-band songbirds. Mindy sang for Johnny Messner and Paul Whiteman before hosting a radio show of her own
and recording for Musicraft and RCA Victor. [Item Code: 40249 CD: $8.50] was $13.00
