Haines was a solid big-band girl singer, her sweet, clear voice carrying most of these songs, including highlights like “What Is This Thing Called Love?,” “Little Brown Jug,” “Rhumboogie,” and “There’ll Be Some Changes Made.” [Item Code: 32665 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 242 THE KING SISTERS SWINGIN’ ON A STAR [1944-1945] The majority of the contents of this CD are unique live performances from 1944-45, extracted from such AFRS programs as Command Performance, Mail Call and At Ease, the last with the Alvino Rey Service Orchestra. [Item Code: 32666 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 243 SAM DONAHUE DANCE DATE [1955] Dance Date reissues 20 tracks from Sam Donahue, a sweet bandleader and tenor saxophonist from the ‘50s. Somewhat similar to a Lawrence Welk version of Stan Getz, the tenor had the bright tone of Lester Young and the low-throated swing of Coleman Hawkins, but very little to say besides sounding sweet. There are a few highlights, though, including Dorothy Dunn’s impressive vocal on “He’s Funny That Way.” [Item Code: 32667 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 305 ALAN DALE SWEET AND GENTLE CROONER [1940s - 1950s] Sweet & Gentle Crooner is an Alan Dale CD that nicely complements the album entitled Alan Dale Sings. We get a few of his earlier radio recordings on this CD; and so it has value for people who love this crooner--and for people just discovering Alan as well. The quality of the sound is really pretty good considering that the first eight of these songs were recorded in the 1940s. Accompaniment by George Paxton and Ray Bloch orchestras. [Item Code: 37687 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 306 ELLA MAE MORSE THE DYNAMITE TEXAS DIVA [1942-1945] This disc collects 19 live performances, most with the AFRS Orchestra, of Morse’s hits and a few rarities (including a few she never recorded commercially). Her biggest hit, “Cow Cow Boogie,” appears twice, first in 1942 backed by the Freddie Slack Orchestra (with whom she recorded the hit), the second two years later (after she began a solo career) with an AFRS group led by Meredith Willson. Also appearing with great performances are Morse favorites “Mister Five by Five” and “Milkman, Keep Those Bottles Quiet,” the latter from a Johnny Mercer radio show with Paul Weston & His Orchestra. [Item Code: 37692 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 307 VARIOUS ARTISTS 40 #1 HITS OF THE ‘40’S [1940-1949] The ‘Fabulous Forties’ was a wonderful period in American popular music as this compilation will attest. Wonderful melodies with story telling lyrics were crafted by some of the very best songsmiths this country has ever produced. An ‘On-The-Air’ career retrospective. [Item Code: 50333 2-CD: $15.50] was $26.00 440 FOY WILLING SAGEBRUSH SWING [1940s] The actual title of this 20-song collection is Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage (2004) and it highlights some rare sides. Although no precise annotations are given, probable sources for the contents of this nearly three-quarter-hour CD are the Armed Forces Radio Service programs Command Performance, Melody Roundup, or, perhaps the stateside broadcast All-Star Western Theater. This is an excellent compendium, capturing them at their peak and sporting some of their best-loved material. Among the more familiar tunes are “Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds,” “Red River Valley,” “Carry Me Back to the Lone Prairie,” and “You Are My Sunshine.” Their unique up-tempo Western swing style features airtight vocal harmony blends. [Item Code: 51036 CD: $12.50] was $17.00 441 AL JOLSON AN EVENING WITH AL JOLSON [late 1940s] Material from a performance from Jolson’s late-’40s comeback tour.
