Astrophysical Consequ of ISCO
• The surface of a neutron star is around the
ISCO, probably inside for M > 1.3 M S .
• Accretion disks can only exist downto the ISCO,
since motion in the disk is essentially Keplerian
(circular orbits).
• Binding energy of ISCO determines the
accretion efficiency η = 1 – E ISCO = 6% (Schw.)
• Angular momentum L = (12) 1/2 GM/c at ISCO is
accreted onto the neutron star or Black Hole
Spinning up of NSs and BHs by accretion!
