ief history History The origins of EMBO date back to 1963, when a group of leading European biologists gathered in Ravello, Italy to discuss proposals by John Kendrew and Conrad Waddington to establish an organisation and laboratory for co-operation in molecular biology. Both proposals were endorsed and later, in July 1964, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) was offi cially born. The Ravello meeting laid down two initial goals for EMBO – the creation of a central laboratory and the establishment of networking activities to enhance interactions between scientists across Europe. To pursue these goals, two committees were set up. The efforts of the Laboratory Committee led to the establishment of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The Federal Organisation Committee became the motor for the EMBO Fellowship Programme and Courses & Workshops Programme. The Ravello meeting also saw the election of Max Perutz as the fi rst EMBO Chairman and John Kendrew as Secretary General. Thanks to the efforts of another of EMBO’s founding members, Eduard Kellenberger, EMBO was awarded offi cial legal status on 12 July 1964. The Volkswagen Foundation provided start-up funding for the organisation and EMBO initiated its fi rst networking activities including fellowships, practical courses and the election of 200 biologists as the fi rst EMBO Members. www.embo.org/about_embo/history.html The EMBO Council worked hard to secure long-term funding for EMBO and in 1969 the governments of 14 member states established the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC). Formal ratifi cation followed in 1970. EMBC adopted the activities started with the Volkswagen funding and these became known as the EMBC General Programme. Soon after its foundation, EMBC also accepted a proposal by EMBO to establish a European laboratory. As a result, 10 EMBC Member States came together in 1974 to form EMBL as an independent intergovernmental organisation. Today EMBC has grown to 25 member states including most of the European Union (EU) and some neighbouring countries. Thanks to EMBC funding and the success of The EMBO Journal, EMBO has been able to expand its scope dramatically over the years, particularly in the past decade (see timeline opposite). Every year thousands of scientists benefi t from EMBO training, career development and networking activities. The organisation also plays an increasing role in European science policy. With a current membership of over 1,200 of Europe’s leading life scientists and 70 associate members worldwide, EMBO has become the focal point of the European life sciences community and a major catalyst for high-quality research. ➔ 11
