EMBO actions 2006
EMBO Council Strategic Meeting
A special meeting of the EMBO Council, EMBO
Committee Chairs and the EMBO Managers was
held from 14 –16 March 2006 in Küssnacht, Switzerland.
The focus of the meeting was the EMBO
strategy for the period 2006 – 2015. The Council
accepted a number of proposals by EMBO:
➔ EMBO will increase its engagement in molecular
medicine. Proposed activities in this
area are the launch of a new journal (endorsed
in a survey of the EMBO Members) and EMBO
Short-Term Fellowships for clinicians. EMBO
will also continue to fund a Molecular Medicine
Workshop as part of its Courses & Workshops
Programme.
➔ The EMBO Membership Committee will review
the changing focus of research (for example,
the increased focus on molecular medicine
or systems biology) and the associated consequences
for the composition of EMBO’s membership.
➔ EMBO will explore the possibility of a partnership
with the European Life Sciences Organisation
(ELSO).
➔ EMBO will continue to be engaged in debates
on life sciences policy in Europe and will make
an annual statement on scientifi c and demographic
changes in European life sciences.

➔ EMBO will maintain its Science & Society
Programme and Women in Science Activities,
collaborating with other organisations where
appropriate.
➔ EMBO will start discussions with EMBL on developing
joint EMBO/EMBL Symposia to be held
in the new EMBL Advanced Training Centre after
its opening in 2009.
➔ EMBO will consolidate its activities in the
area of professional training. Actions such as
the EMBO Media Workshops and Laboratory
Management Courses will be merged into a cohesive
training programme during a pilot phase
in 2007.
➔ EMBO will start a travel grants programme
to support young scientists attending scientifi c
meetings.
➔ EMBO activities in the area of policy advice
were recognised as an important and relatively
new role for the organisation.
➔
The importance of EMBO’s journals was reiterated,
particularly as a means of promoting
high standards in research, maintaining a strong
European and science-driven presence in scientifi
c publishing, and as a source of income for
current and future EMBO activities.
