EMBO
The European Molecular Biology Organization
(EMBO) works with leading researchers to promote
excellence in the molecular life sciences
in Europe. The organisation supports transnational
training and exchange at all stages of the
scientifi c career, promoting collaboration across
Europe and internationally. EMBO activities are
funded predominantly by the European Molecular
Biology Conference (EMBC) as part of the
EMBC General Programme.
Through EMBC, EMBO supports over 600
research fellowships annually and more than
70 practical courses, workshops and conferences.
The EMBO Young Investigator Programme
promotes outstanding young group leaders
across Europe, while EMBO Installation Grants
strengthen scientifi c development in selected
EMBC Member States. EMBC also supports
EMBO’s Science & Society Programme, promoting
dialogue between scientists and other sectors
of society, and its Electronic Information
Programme, providing web-based services to
EMBO and its communities.
EMBO also funds initiatives independently.
These activities are developed based on careful
analysis of the needs of the European life
sciences community. Start-up funding comes
primarily from EMBO’s journals and occasionally
from European Union (EU) grants or collaborations
with international organisations. EMBO
pilots these activities to determine the potential
benefi t of adding them to the EMBC General
Programme.
Scientifi c publishing is another mainstay of
EMBO. The EMBO Journal and EMBO reports
are already well established in the scientifi c literature
with a reputation for quality and innovation.
EMBO’s newest journal, Molecular Systems
Biology, aims to set the same standards in
the emerging fi eld of molecular systems biology.
Published exclusively online, the open-access
journal is the fi rst electronic publication to be
dedicated to this fi eld.
EMBO takes its lead from the scientifi c community
and in particular the EMBO Members.
EMBO elects new members annually on the basis
of excellence in research. With over 1,200
EMBO Members in Europe and more than 70 associate
members worldwide, the organisation
provides a dedicated focal point for the European
life sciences community. EMBO Members
are some of the leading researchers in Europe,
amongst them over 40 Nobel laureates. The
membership provides valuable input to EMBO in
all of its activities, in particular through participation
in the EMBO committees.
The EMBO Council is also intensely engaged
in EMBO actions, contributing strategically to
the direction of the organisation. Comprising 15
EMBO Members, elected by the membership,
the Council meets annually with the EMBO management
to discuss and review EMBO activities.
A dedicated team of managers, administrators
and editors deliver these activities at the EMBO
headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany.
