Acknowledgements
This publication was produced under the leadership of the senior management of two WHO regional
offices, Dr Richard Nesbit, Director Programme Management of the Regional Office for the Western
Pacific and Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Deputy Regional Director of the Regional Office for
South-East Asia. It is the final result of the contributions and comments of the many individuals
mentioned below and in the succeeding page.
Much valuable advice and support was received from Dr Myint Htwe, Director, Programme
Management, Regional Office for South-East Asia and the respective technical directors of both
regional offices. From the Regional Office for the Western Pacific, Dr Henk Bekedam (incumbent)
and Dr Soe Nyunt-U (former) directors of the Health Sector Development Department, Dato' Dr Tee
Ah Sian of the Combating Communicable Diseases Department and Dr Linda Milan of the Building
Healthy Communities and Populations Department provided their support. Similarly, from the Regional
Office for South-East Asia, input was provided by Dr N. Kumara Rai (acting) and Dr Sultana Khanum
(former) directors of the Health System Development Department, Dr Than Sein (former director) of
the Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Department, Dr Jai P. Narain of the Communicable
Diseases Department, Dr Dini Latief of the Family and Community Health Department, and Dr A.
Sattar Yoosuf of the Sustainable Development and Healthy Environment Department.
Drafting, revision, reviewing and finalization of the chapters was coordinated by Dr Yok-Ching Chong,
Ms Rosebelle Azcuna, Dr Ophelia Mendoza and Dr Reijo Salmela of the Regional Office for the
Western Pacific, and Dr Sunil Senanayake, Dr Anton Fric, Dr Nihal Singh and Dr Nirmal Kandel of
the Regional Office for South-East Asia.
Technical editors were Dr Lalit Nath, Dr Abhaya Indrayan, Dr Srinivas Venkatesh and
Dr Steve Fabricant. Data was validated by staff of the Health Information Unit in the Regional Office for
the Western Pacific and the Health Situation and Trend Assessment Unit in the Regional Office for South-
East Asia. Final editing was done by Mr Marc Lerner, Mr Jim Hutchison and Ms Roslyn Stirling, and
publication was coordinated by Mr Bruce Murphy and Mr J. Tuli of the Regional Office for South-East
