The Bridge Builder 

An old man, going a lone highway, 

Came, at the evening, cold and gray, 

to a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide, 

Though which was flowing a sullen tide. 

The old man crossed in the twilight dim; 

The sullen stream had no fears for him; 

But he turned, when safe on the other side, 

And built a bridge to span the tide. 

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim, near, 

“You are wasting strength with building here; 

Your journey will end with the ending day; 

You never again must pass this way; 

You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide – 

Why build you a bridge at the eventide?” 

The builder lifted his old gray head: 

“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, 

“There followeth after me today, 

A youth whose feet must pass this way. 

This chasm, that has been naught to me, 

To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. 

He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; 

Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.”

Message froM the President 

Dear Eastside Catholic Community, 

In the seven years since our family moved to Washington to join the Eastside Catholic community, I’ve often 

told the story about what I said to Amy after being interviewed for the position I now hold. I told her I had 

just met a group of people that I would be comfortable leaving our children with if the need ever arose. 

What I didn’t realize then was the many other ways in which I would come to rely on the Eastside Catholic 

community. 

When John McMullan read the poem “The Bridge Builder” by Will 

Allen Dromgoole at a student assembly in August, I thought about 

all the ways in which we, as a community, have acted as bridge 

builders for each other. One of the lines in the poem says, “You 

are wasting your strength with building here; your journey will end 

with the ending day … ” As we have moved ever forward on the 

building of our own home, there have been times when it might 

have been tempting to become discouraged; when a particular 

challenge seemed insurmountable. Yet when those moments have 

come our way, someone within the Eastside Catholic community 

has been there to “build a bridge” – an encouraging word, a stretch 

gift or a willingness to lend a helping hand -- that has gotten us over 

that particular hurdle and toward that school on the hill we have 

envisioned for so long. Every time a student stops by to ask my help 

with an essay for a college application, I am reminded again of the 

reason we are here, and the amazing and talented servant leaders 

we are sending out into the world. This is the reason I came to 

Eastside Catholic, and this is the reason we are building a home for 

these and future students. 

We have built tremendous momentum during this race to the finish 

line. Now, through the generosity of an anonymous donor, we have 

the opportunity to take our Campaign over the top, enabling us to 

achieve even more than we had anticipated. I would like to ask each 

of you to come together as a community to give 100% to this 

amazing effort. Let’s decide not just to “reach” our goal, but to 

surpass it, because that is, and always has been, what we do as a 

family. My heartfelt thanks to each of you: our families, our friends, our Board of Trustees, our faculty and staff 

and most assuredly our amazing students – for being our bridges to a bright future – one that God has 

blessed at every step of our journey.

Message from the President 

of the Board of Trustees 

This year will mark a new chapter in our history. We are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of a new “state of the art” 

campus in the fall of 2008. In addition, we will add a middle school as an integral component of Eastside Catholic 

School. As we count our blessings, we are comforted by the fact that when we need help, it is there – in the form of a 

helpful teacher, a dedicated parent, a committed staff member or a friend who will simply listen (usually in answer to 

our prayers). These are some subtle, yet profound signs of the culture of our community. 

This care and feeling of family is part of the context of our school, regardless of the building in which it is housed. I 

understand this sense of community as a proud parent of Madeline ‘10 and Olivia ‘08. The caring in our community 

also can be seen as tangible financial assistance to families, based on their needs. Twenty six percent of our families 

received financial aid this year, with a majority of this funded through The NOW Fund, our annual fund. Another 

example is our Options Program, which operates on the belief that high school students with special needs deserve the 

opportunity, like their college prep peers, to maximize their academic, social and spiritual potential. 

I believe it is almost impossible to be unhappy if you are grateful. As Trustees, we are grateful for the courage and 

foresight of our founding families and the significant steps they took more than 27 years ago. We are grateful for those 

who have led our school throughout the years. They have created the institutional infrastructure for our benefit and for 

those they will never meet. We appreciate our faculty, administration, parents and our incredible young women and 

men who enable Eastside Catholic School to be the resonant community it is. It will be an exciting day when students 

begin attending school in a facility that befits their spirit and potential. 

I heard a statement recently that was both humbling and frightening at the 

same time: “Our fiduciary duty as a parent is to pave the way for our children 

to enter heaven.” I was expecting the last word in that sentence to be “college” 

or something else. As parents, spouses, significant others, alumni and friends, 

we have the ability to challenge ourselves to be the best we can be whether in 

thoughts, words or deeds. Whether we succeed or fall short, we grow, hopefully 

becoming something greater in the process. Indeed, we are works in progress all 

our lives. 

This also relates to our role as Trustees. How do we learn from the past, avoid 

complacency, and reach for higher goals? I believe the answer is to accept humbly 

and compassionately the responsibility we have – to ensure that Eastside Catholic 

School is the best that it can be. I witness this mindset in every board meeting as 

we look for “right answers” while respectfully debating an issue or communication. 

We are already well into 2008 and are diligently working to finish the school year 

on a high note and prepare for the exciting move in the fall. On behalf of the Board 

of Trustees, I would like to thank you for your passion and perseverance for the 

benefit of this wonderful community. I think Voltaire summed it up quite well when 

he said, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in others 

belong to us as well.”

Takes The Crusader Challenge! 

In November of 2007, an anonymous donor stepped 

forward with a $5 million challenge to the Eastside 

Catholic community called The Crusader Challenge. 

This generous donor is a strong supporter of Catholic 

education, and The Crusader Challenge is designed to 

increase every pledge or gift given by December 31, 2008 

by 50 percent. What an amazing opportunity this is for our 

community! 

How does The Crusader 

Challenge help reach 

or surpass our $40 

million goal? It’s very 

simple. Every pledge 

or gift to the Campaign 

will be increased by 50 

percent. For example, 

a $5,000 pledge or gift 

would be increased by 

$2,500, bringing the 

total gift to $7,500. In 

addition to moving us 

more quickly toward our 

$40 million goal, the 

donor will also be given 

credit in donor reports 

at the new increased 

level.* 

If you have not yet 

made a gift or pledge 

to The Campaign for 

Eastside Catholic, or if you are considering an additional 

gift, now is the time to take advantage of The Crusader 

Challenge. As might be expected on a project of this 

scale, we did not expect to have everything we wanted 

when the doors open in fall 2008, so exceeding our 

$40 million goal will enable us to include amenities that 

were on hold, waiting for additional funding. If our entire 

community participates, we will reach – or even surpass 

– this ambitious and worthwhile goal. 

The aerial photo on this page was taken in mid-March. 

As we approach move-in day this summer, the progress 

on our beautiful new campus continues to amaze all 

who see it. At the end of March and going into April, the 

construction crew was working on landscaping, fencing, 

trim and equipment installation, as well as beginning work 

on the grandstand foundation at the athletic field.

Emmet Hogan 

—Still Believing 

still Believe that studying history Can Change the world,” says eMMet 

hogan as he refleCts on his Beliefs aBout teaChing. hogan has Been 

teaChing history at eastside CatholiC for 16 years; he is ConvinCed of 

the iMPortanCe of studying history and he enCourages his students to 

see the relevanCe that learning aBout the Past has to their lives. 

He says that in the world today, it is easy to become 

cynical and to think that oppression and violence will 

always win out. “The longer I teach and the more I work 

with students the more hopeful I am that we can solve 

our problems and create a better future.” 

This importance of acquiring the skills of a good historian 

was reaffirmed for him this past summer when Hogan 

joined a select group of teachers at Cambridge University 

in England for a seminar on the American civil rights 

movement. “Being taught by some of the top historians 

in England reminded me of the power that comes from 

being able to ask insightful questions, make a convincing 

argument and critique what other people are telling you 

to believe about the world.” 

He argues though, that just being good at history or any 

subject isn’t enough. “The world is filled with educated 

people who do cruel things to other human beings,” 

he says. “Reflecting on and improving our thinking is a 

key to overcoming the prejudices that we all have.”

In Hogan’s history class, students grapple with 

the course’s guiding question, ‘What does it mean 

to have liberty and justice for all?’ As students 

study historical events, they also are challenged 

to become fair-minded, self-reflective critical 

thinkers. He believes this is what sets Eastside 

Catholic apart from other schools. 

Hogan believes that the role of teachers at EC is 

to prepare students for life, not just college. “The 

goal is life prep – not just college prep,” Hogan 

says. “We don’t just care about you as a test taker 

or an AP student. It’s not good enough to be a 

good student. Acting ethically and examining 

your own prejudices and the limits of your own 

knowledge – and how you treat other people – are 

key components of our concept of academic 

excellence. That’s why I went into teaching.” 

In Eastside Catholic’s senior Block class, Hogan 

teams up with English teacher Jen Dotsey and 

Theology teacher Tom Kittridge to teach students 

about social justice from the perspective of each 

of their respective disciplines. Students spend 

two class periods a day examining what it means 

to be a responsible person in today’s complex 

world, and receive 10 college credits from Seattle 

University. 

When he’s not in room 311 teaching students, 

Hogan might be out on the track coaching 

Eastside Catholic’s track teams or on Cougar 

Mountain with the cross country team. He sees 

his coaching role as more than just winning 

cross country or track meets. “Running requires 

hard work and perseverance,” he says. “I want 

to create a supportive team atmosphere where 

everyone feels valued and supported.” A runner in 

his own right, Hogan recently began competitive 

running again and last spring ran 14:59 for 5km, 

his fastest time since college. 

As the Eastside Catholic family prepares to move to its 

first permanent home in Sammamish in fall 2008, our 

students are blessed to have the dedication of teachers 

like Emmet Hogan who believe in giving students the 

tools they need to make the world – and themselves 

- better.

What is your legacy to the students 

who will come after you? 

George: The underclassmen will have to 

learn some things for themselves. What 

is important are the simple things we do 

like putting snowmen and jingle bells in 

the cafeteria with students’ names on 

them. I believe that we will leave a sense 

of community that encourages everyone 

to get involved, and this is something our 

class has developed over the four years 

we’ve been together.” 

Brianna: “Our class has a lot of EC pride, 

and that common ground of school 

spirit really brings our class together, 

and brings the entire school together. 

We treat one another with a tremendous 

amount of compassion, so we aren’t just 

leaving a legacy of school spirit, but we 

are really passing down the value we 

place on community.” 

Kyle: “I believe our legacy will be through

For the Homecoming dance in the fall, 

I helped choreograph a dance for Gino 

Alia and Megan Boss, two seniors in

began working with them to perfect their 

dance, which they performed at the 

Homecoming Pep Assembly. It was great 

to watch them having so much fun and 

seeing the way the entire student body

Ian: “I hope I have encouraged other 

students by setting an example in 

academics, by showing them that 

academic success is possible for 

everyone. Success in academics is 

not just for people with no other life;

athletics and social events and still

useful than just getting good grades.” 

John: “Eastside Catholic is truly 

a miracle. It has evolved into a 

community that thousands of people 

are a part of. We have had to endure 

not having a home of our own, but that 

is what has made us special. We have 

learned to adapt and be thankful for 

what we have. I hope that our legacy is 

that every student who enters Eastside 

Catholic is thankful for all that they 

have been fortunate enough to receive, 

and that those who came before them 

created an opportunity for them to 

succeed, just as the ones before us 

did.” 

Trish:”I believe that my class genuinely 

cares about our community and the 

students who are a part of it. Through

that appreciation we teach others how to 

respect everyone. Our school spirit, concern for 

others and friendly personalities set an example 

that the underclassmen want to follow.” 

What makes Eastside Catholic unique? 

George: “In other schools, the outgoing 

students get noticed, but the shy students 

may be overlooked. Here at Eastside Catholic, 

even the quiet kids are noticed and spoken 

to by everyone. Our teachers do this too. For 

example, Mr. Severson and Fr. Heric greet 

everyone as they walk around the campus. It 

makes everyone feel like they are an important 

part of the community.” 

Brianna: “It’s really hard to explain, but I 

have a lot of friends who attend other schools, 

including other private schools, and our 

experiences of school just do not compare. 

I think the best way to explain it is that at EC 

everyone wants to be there, the teachers love 

to teach, and the students want to get the most 

out of what these major role models in their life 

want to teach them.” 

Kyle: “It may sound corny and overused, but 

the community. People are nice to each other. 

When we went to Leadership Camp, other kids 

were saying, ‘Is everyone at Eastside Catholic 

like this? We wish we could go to Eastside 

Catholic!’ We have lots of school spirit, and it’s 

a fun place to be.” 

Ian: “EC is both a high-caliber academic school 

and a close-knit community. Teachers, staff and 

students genuinely care for each other here. 

Not many people can spend their time in a 

small community of friends and still get a firstrate 

education out of the deal.” 

John: “Eastside Catholic is unique because we 

are not just a school, we are a community. We 

have created a place where everyone is here for 

each other. We are a true success story; from a 

rented building to a 50-acre dream campus.” 

Trish: “Eastside Catholic is extremely unique. 

It is a place where people want to be by choice, 

not force. The teachers show that they want to 

wake up every morning and of all the places they 

could be, Eastside Catholic is the place they 

chose. I have never met a group of teachers who are so dedicated 

and enthusiastic about their job. Students and faculty build close 

friendships of respect and equality unlike any other school. Our 

school also has the most spirit I have ever seen. I think that is what 

brings our community together.” 

As a future Eastside Catholic alum, how do you think you’ll feel 

when you visit the new campus? 

George: “Of course, we will always have so many great memories of 

our current campus, but it will be cool to see the new things that 

kids are doing to be part of Eastside Catholic at the new campus. 

Hopefully, if teachers remember me, I’ll feel welcome.” 

Brianna: “I think it will be a really amazing feeling to see how the 

community we led has taken shape in a new setting. I will feel very 

proud of everything EC accomplished in getting to the new campus 

and how my class played a major role in it. Not to sound like a 

commercial, but that is priceless!” 

Kyle: “I’m going to still come back and watch the games. It’s going 

to be cool to watch the progress of the new campus.” 

Ian: “Most alumni will feel a strange mixture of happiness for the 

people they know who will be able to go there and jealousy that 

they themselves did not get the chance. Such an amazing facility 

cannot help but cause jealousy for the class who missed it by only 

a year. But at the same time, I’m glad that EC now has a campus to 

match the quality of the school itself.” 

John: “I picture myself years from now coming to Homecoming, 

assemblies and coming back to visit with a sense of pride. People 

will not know who I am or what I have accomplished at Eastside 

Catholic, but I will be proud to see students getting an education 

from the best teachers; students who are part of a tight community 

and now a part of history; a place in which I did not get to spend 

my high school career, but a place I know I had an effect on. 

I hope that future students do not forget who came before them, 

and where they came from. I know that I will never forget that we 

were a key element in creating such a great school.” 

Trish: ”Honestly, I will

Burnham Family 

Betting on a Sure Thing 

hen Karen and Terry Burnham’s oldest son Nick was in the 

eighth grade, they were not enthusiastic about the experience 

he was having in junior high school, so they struck a deal 

with him. “Attend one year of school at Eastside Catholic,” 

they told him, “and if you don’t like it, you can go back to 

public school.” Nick agreed to the deal, and then stayed at 

Eastside Catholic. By the time Todd and Lexie began high 

school, the Burnhams had moved closer to campus, and all 

three children graduated from Eastside Catholic. 

Although Nick ‘02 (a UW alum, currently in a sales management training program), Todd ‘04 (a senior at UW) and 

Lexie ‘05 (a junior at Loyola Marymount), are now young adults, Karen and Terry Burnham are both still involved 

with Eastside Catholic and strong supporters of The Campaign for Eastside Catholic – Eastside Catholic’s quest 

for a permanent home. As they talk about their experiences here, the thread that runs throughout their comments 

is the support and friendships they experienced as they were raising their family. “The reason that we are 

participating in the Campaign is that it’s a way 

for us to thank Eastside Catholic for helping us 

raise our kids,” says Terry. “Eastside Catholic 

reinforced the things that Karen and I believe 

are important. The kids who graduate from 

Eastside Catholic are going to be our future 

leaders, and the values that they learn there 

will help our country and the world.” Eastside 

Catholic also stresses the importance in 

building community. Karen and Terry are 

thankful for the many friendships built when 

their children were students at EC and that 

continue today. 

To illustrate the way they were welcomed 

into the EC community, Karen talks about 

her first experience at an Eastside Catholic 

basketball game. “When Nick was a freshman, 

he made the junior varsity basketball team,” 

she explains. “We walked into that first game

believe are important. The kids who graduate from Eastside 

Catholic are going to be our future leaders, and the values 

that they learn there will help our country and the world.” 

and felt overwhelmed because we didn’t 

know anyone. One mom – Pat Dana (alumni 

parent of Donny ’01) – waved to us from 

across the gym. She had saved a spot for us! 

That meant everything to me.” After that first 

game, Pat saved a spot for the Burnhams at 

each game, and introduced them to other 

parents. They immediately felt part of the 

community. While Terry and Karen were 

making friends within the EC community, 

Nick, Todd and Lexie were having worthwhile 

experiences as students. 

For Nick, being pushed academically at 

Eastside Catholic was useful when he got 

to the University of Washington. “Taking AP 

and other [college prep] classes made us 

practice good study habits, which really paid 

off in college when we didn’t have someone 

standing over us, making us study. Laurie 

Matthews was a teacher who gave me an 

opportunity to succeed and propelled me to 

push myself in other classes,” he says. 

Todd remembers the first English class that 

he took at Eastside Catholic, from English 

teacher Holly Stein. “She didn’t just have 

you read a book and write an essay. She 

taught us to emphasize our own ideas. She 

encouraged us to analyze the point the 

author was trying to make.” 

Lexie talks about having the opportunity to 

take English from Dr. Gary “Doc” Culbert 

for two years (instead of senior year only, 

as most students do). “Doc really pushed us to do a lot of 

reading,” Lexie says. “He made me more able to understand 

and to see different viewpoints.” Karen believes that Lexie’s 

ability to advocate for herself in college is a direct result 

of her academic experiences at Eastside Catholic, where 

teachers encouraged her to ask questions and think for 

herself. 

The “deal” that Karen and Terry Burnham struck with Nick 

back in 1999 has paid great dividends – for the Burnham 

family and for Eastside Catholic. Our community is truly 

fortunate to have Lexie, Todd and Nick as gifted alumni, 

and Karen and Terry as loyal and steadfast volunteers, 

benefactors, alumni parents and friends.

At Eastside Catholic School, we honor and recognize students who are top scholars, 

active in their faith and exhibit the qualities of an Eastside Catholic Crusader: character, 

honor, integrity and generosity of spirit. The Pastor Scholar Program honors incoming 

freshmen who are committed to academic excellence with up to four $5,000 merit 

scholarships that are renewable for each year of their high school careers. Additional 

one-time $2,500 awards are granted to runners-up. Students must be accepted, choose
