Message fr om the President
While we educate our young men and women well,
we also take a broader view of what it means
to be a person in the Catholic tradition.
We develop strong minds and strong
bodies but it is the development
of the heart and faith
that completes us.
The Heart of Eastside Catholic
Dear Families and Friends of Eastside Catholic High School,
I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the optimism that a
new spring brings. As I look back on our past school year, I am more
optimistic than ever.
Under Greg Marsh’s established and vibrant leadership, Fr. Heric’s
spiritual guidance and through the gifts of our remarkable faculty, I
know our students are receiving a wonderful education of the mind,
heart and spirit.
Our students energize us with their vigor, compassion and service
to each other and to others. They reflect the same values their parents
share with Eastside Catholic. As a community of faith and compassion,
we came together in support of the Hill family last fall when they lost
their son Brian, a sophomore at Eastside Catholic, in a car accident.
It is often said that moments of adversity reveal true character. Our
students, the adults in the schoolhouse and our parents responded with
such a natural sense of caring and love that we were all proud to be
Eastside Catholic Crusaders and blessed that we could provide some
small comfort to the Hill family in their time of profound loss.
While we educate our young men and women well, we also take a
broader view of what it means to be a person in the Catholic tradition.
Our goal is to act and teach as Jesus did, so our students will become
beacons of light in a world that needs illumination. We develop strong
minds and strong bodies but it is the development of the heart and faith
that completes us. That is the Eastside Catholic difference.
What I’ve witnessed with each passing year at Eastside Catholic
is many people willingly and graciously giving of themselves to make
a difference in our students’ lives. The adage, “It takes a village to raise
a child,” rings true when you spend time in the Eastside Catholic
community. You have made a difference in the lives of our students
through your energy and support of our mission.
On behalf of our students and our faculty and staff, thank you for
believing in and supporting Eastside Catholic. As we march toward a
bright future, your support ensures that we can provide our students
with the tools and the values to truly make our world a better place.
God bless you.
Sincerely,
Jim Kubacki
Message from the President of the Board of Trustees Capital Campaign Report
Dear Family and Friends of Eastside Catholic,
I am often asked why our family chose to get involved with Eastside Catholic. The
answer is simple. All three of our children were successful students in public schools on
the Sammamish Plateau and received a good education there, but we felt something was
missing. We wanted a high school environment that was more conducive to individual
growth relationships with teachers and staff.
We attended our first Eastside Catholic High School open house in the fall of 1999.
Immediately upon walking onto the campus we felt an energy that we had not
experienced before. Students dressed in orange and blue greeted us and entered into
meaningful conversation with us. We were amazed at how articulate and self-assured they
all were. My husband and I looked at each other and asked, “Can this be real?”
It was and it continues to be.
Eastside Catholic is a special place. It is a faith-centered educational community that
develops the whole individual. Class sizes are small so teachers have time to work one-onone
with their students. The educational emphasis is to develop each student’s ability to
examine and decipher meaning and relevance in written passages, scientific experiments,
artwork, etc. When our oldest daughter was a freshman at Santa Clara University, she
wrote an English paper on the integrated social science and humanities course offered at
Eastside Catholic through a partnership with Seattle University. She wrote that the course
helped her to be a critical thinker. It helped her to “delve into the prose in order to find an
answer.” Her professor at Santa Clara read her paper aloud to the class and commented
that she wished she had an opportunity to attend such a class when
she was in high school.
Besides academics, relationships are a significant part of Eastside Catholic. Students
bond with their classmates but they also form special relationships with faculty and staff
that last a lifetime. Recent graduates routinely correspond with past teachers and visit
the school when home on breaks. In the same manner, current students are creating and
experiencing similar relationships.
Above all, faith is an integral part of Eastside Catholic. Fr. Heric provides a wonderful
spiritual influence. People of all faiths attend our school and they are welcomed lovingly
into our community. Liturgies celebrate the uniqueness of us as individuals and the
strength that comes from our partnership together. Our culminating student retreat,
Destiny, helps our students explore who they are in relation to themselves, others and
God. It is powerful and moving and is characterized by all as a life-altering experience.
Our family is deeply committed to Eastside Catholic and I thank each and every one of
you for your commitment. This school is a labor of faith and love that extends beyond the
school grounds. We can all be proud of its accomplishments and be proud to say that we
take part in it. Thank you for your continued support of Eastside Catholic.
Building Excellence . . . Together
For the first time in its 25-year history, Eastside Catholic High School now owns the property on which
its future will be built. In December 2004, a deed was filed on the final portion of a 50-acre property in the
city of Sammamish, signaling an important milestone in the school’s history.
Since it was founded by a group of parents in 1980, Eastside Catholic has leased a campus from the
Bellevue School District. On September 26, 2001, the Eastside Catholic Board of Trustees voted to
purchase the first plat of land. Since then, the Board has worked diligently to acquire the property necessary
to build a campus that reflects Eastside Catholic’s tradition of excellence.
There has been extraordinary progress on a master plan in the last year, and we hope to complete
construction design, permitting and entitlements in 2005. A market study conducted last year indicated
a huge demand for a Catholic middle school on the Sammamish Plateau. The preferred master plan now
includes a 6-8 grade middle school to meet that need.
Eastside Catholic President Jim Kubacki is optimistic about the challenges that lie ahead and the future of
the school. “While we face obstacles, we are thrilled with our success to date and believe we have assembled
the right team of finance, education and construction experts to achieve our goals,” Kubacki said. “We are
excited about the opportunity to provide a strong Catholic education to a larger network of families and
become a community partner with the city of Sammamish.”
Clearly, the lifeblood of any school is the faculty and staff, students and parents who work together to
create the best educational environment. We have always focused on putting the best people, programs
and community in place that will enable our students to achieve excellence and become the people God
intends them to be. A permanent home will be icing on the cake. It will give us the stability we desire while
matching the excellence of our education with equally excellent facilities.
Fundraising has already begun and to date we have raised more than $21 million which includes a lead gift
of $10 million and a $2 million anonymous gift. We are grateful to have received $3 million in pledges from
foundations including the Norcliffe
Foundation, Paccar Foundation and
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Board of Trustees will set
a final campaign goal once we
complete this preliminary phase of
a capital campaign. Ultimately, the
campaign will include gifts from
individuals, foundations, gifts in
kind and financing.
Bob and Eugenia Murphy
Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future
Sitting on the committee that developed the mission statement
was . . . a great experience. It was worked on so
selflessly by so many people and it evolved
beautifully. It truly reflects selfless
involvement and commitment
to the whole person.
When her husband Bob was transferred from San Francisco to Seattle in 1980, Eugenia
Murphy got busy looking for the right school for their children. She wrote to the Seattle Archdiocese to
get information about schools and programs. At the time, son Joe was finishing eighth grade and daughter
Tiffany was finishing fourth grade, so Eugenia was looking for a high school that would work well for both.
“We wanted to look at schools before deciding where to build a home,” Eugenia recalled. “When
I received information from the Archdiocese, someone had handwritten ‘there is a new independent
Catholic high school on the eastside called Eastside Catholic. You might want to look into this.’ I
considered this handwritten note a personal reference, so I looked into it. Dick Ellis was the principal at
the time, and it was the first year Eastside Catholic was open, and everyone was so warm, friendly and
inviting.”
Bob and Eugenia were both educated in Catholic schools and appreciated Eastside Catholic’s focus
on Catholic values, strong curriculum and opportunities for personal growth.
“We figured that’s what really counts in life,” said Eugenia.
The Murphys, members of St. Louise parish, were active in Eastside Catholic activities while their
children were in school and enjoyed the community spirit so much they reconnected several years later.
“It’s a wonderful community, and it’s given our kids an excellent education which was the foundation
of everything they’ve done beyond that,” said Bob.
Eugenia helped found, and is still the driving force behind, Women’s League – an organization
dedicated to providing friendship and support to women in the Eastside Catholic community. Women’s
League includes mothers of current students, alumni mothers and friends of Eastside Catholic.
“After graduation, our children move on, but we women are not ready to leave our friendships.
They go beyond the school bell. We felt there needed to be some vehicle for women to continue their
emotional, intellectual and spiritual development after their children graduated,” she said. “Also, the
school was looking for a tradition. Women’s League seemed to be an appropriate vehicle for that.”
Additionally, Eugenia served two terms on the Board of Trustees after her children graduated. She
considers that a great learning experience and a tremendous opportunity to build relationships that still
benefit Eastside Catholic. Following the years on the Board, Eugenia and Bob continued their dedication
to Eastside Catholic by serving on the Foundation Board for six years.
“I still cannot believe the truly good people who give of their time and talent to sit on the board of a
high school. It’s hard work and it’s time consuming, but they give so generously,” said Eugenia. “I served
on the policy committee and had never worked in the area of policy before, so I learned a tremendous
amount and was exposed to true fairness in setting policy.
“Sitting on the committee that developed the mission statement was also a great experience. It was
worked on so selflessly by so many people and it evolved beautifully. It truly reflects selfless involvement
and commitment to the whole person.”
Last year, Bob and Eugenia eagerly agreed to serve on the Emeriti Advisory Committee that helped
establish the Emeriti group. The group is composed of former members of the Board of Trustees and the
Foundation Board. The Murphys also graciously hosted the Emeriti kickoff event at their home.
As part of the Emeriti group, Bob and Eugenia are now looking forward to the future of Eastside
Catholic and are committed to helping the school evolve and grow. They see tremendous opportunities to
build the community of Eastside Catholic and provide a top-notch education.
“Permanence has come into crystal clear vision,” said Eugenia. “It’s in focus. We will soon be able to
reach out to so many more students and families and they’ll have the same wonderful opportunities that
our children had because of Eastside Catholic.”
Bob added, “We believe in the mission of Eastside Catholic and what it’s doing. It’s providing a
wonderful asset to the community and really is a model for other schools.”
5
Eastside Catholic will graduate 116 students in
June, but just one of them would prefer to wear a black
cowboy hat rather than a mortar board when he crosses the
stage to receive a diploma. Senior Sean Chilberg can be seen
sporting the hat around campus, a hat he started wearing in
his freshman year as a way of expressing his own sense of
style.
His mentor teacher, art teacher Mary Nau said, “Sean
started late in our mentor group because of his hip surgery,
so it took a little while for him to join the group that had
already had a chance to get to know each other during Frosh
Overnight. However, he was an excited participant in the
Homecoming festivities for that year – when he first acquired
his trademark cowboy hat.”
The hat hides Chilberg’s brilliant red hair but it does not
shadow the smile that spreads an infectious good cheer.
Teacher Jenny Wendorf ’95, who has closely watched
Chilberg grow during his four years as an Eastside Catholic
student said, “He is always willing to help out, hold the door
open or do whatever he can to help.”
Theology teacher Diane Gockel said, “When he sees
me in the morning getting out of my car, loaded down with
books and bags, he will volunteer to help carry them for me
even when he has more than enough to carry himself.”
Chilberg, born with Down Syndrome, is a student
in Eastside Catholic’s Options Program, a special
education program for a limited number of students with
developmental disabilities. Because of early intervention
programs in California, where he was born, a specialist started
visiting him at home when he was four months old and he
started attending school when he was just one year old.
When it came time for high school, his parents, Stacy
and Marty, chose Eastside Catholic for their son because
they wanted a more traditional high school experience – one
focused on academics and not a strictly vocational program.
As he looks ahead to his life after graduation, Chilberg will
take classes at Bellevue Community College and in the
Issaquah School District’s Transition Program. For now as a
senior, Chilberg studies math, science, religion, civics and also
spends two periods a day as an office assistant for our library,
Counseling Center and Development Office.
Development Coordinator Jenny Rieg is the one who
helps set up projects for Chilberg to work on each day. She
said, “He truly brightens up our office with his presence. He
comes in and greets each member of our department with
a handshake or a high-five and is always more than willing
to help out in any way possible. We have gained as much
from Sean as he has from this experience. I think he is a true
6
testament to the positive effects that the Options Program
has on our community. He is a deeply caring soul whose
love for Eastside Catholic is immeasurable.”
Another class new for Chilberg this year is Leadership
class, which brings him to campus at 7 a.m. three days a
week. Leadership students plan and lead assemblies and
organize homecoming events and community service
projects. They strive to be role models for other students,
demonstrating a commitment to excellence.
“I want to be involved. I want to be a leader for the
freshmen, sophomores and juniors,” Chilberg said.
As a student leader, Chilberg and his mother, Stacy,
were asked to speak at the Parent Faculty Student
Association’s annual Mother/Son Christmas Liturgy in
December 2004. Stacy Chilberg told a story about one
moment that shows her son’s bright spirit with his father,
sister and brother:
It is early evening and my husband, Marty, has
just returned from work. All three of the children
clamor to greet him at the door. Angela and
Scott get to him before Sean does and they begin
the tradition of climbing up the front of Marty
with their legs while he is holding their hands.
They then do a flip and it is the next child’s turn.
Scott and Angela are so involved in their turns
with Angela asking for one more time and Scott
expressing that it is his turn now. Meanwhile, Sean
is patiently waiting to the side with an expression
of complete joy on his face. He is not only looking
forward to his turn but he is fully enjoying
experiencing his siblings’ turns as well. Family has
always been so important to Sean and our family
has been made so much better because of him.
Chilberg talked at the liturgy about his mother’s
influence on him: “My mom said to just be yourself. It is
important to me because she was right.”
Eastside Catholic Chaplain Fr. William Heric said
Chilberg’s faith shows in his commitment to frequently
attend early morning Masses celebrated twice a week on our
campus. Fr. Heric said, “That tells me in part at least, where
he gets his big heart and caring nature. I consider him to be
one of the most spiritually mature students we have here.”
Charlie Acosta
25 Years of Excellence
What drew Acosta to Eastside
Catholic was what he calls its true
sense of balance in education, bringing
together academics, social and athletic
development, and spirituality.
Only one member of the Eastside Catholic
community has seen every student and every family since
our doors opened in 1980 – physical education teacher
Charlie Acosta. He has taught a generation of Crusaders,
encouraging them to learn not just how to throw farther,
jump higher and run faster, but also what sportsmanship
means and how to both win with honor and lose with
grace. These life lessons do not end in our gym. Acosta also
coached baseball and football with hundreds of our alumni
and current students.
Acosta was hired before Eastside Catholic
even opened its doors. He was in his first year
teaching and coaching at Seattle Prep (he had
previously taught for seven years in his home
state of California) when two of his colleagues,
Jim Walters and Ralph Winters, told him they
were leaving to join the faculty of a new Catholic
school. It was an opportunity full of excitement
and promise.
“We loved this school…. Everybody was
pumped up. We worked our tails off. Faculty
showed up a month early just to get everything
started,” Acosta said.
What drew Acosta to Eastside Catholic
was what he calls its true sense of balance in
education, bringing together academics, social
and athletic development, and spirituality.
“We care about every kid. I’ve always been
proud of that about Eastside Catholic. I can convince every
kid to come to Eastside Catholic over other schools any
day,” Acosta said.
He is immensely proud of two particular Eastside
Catholic alumni, his two children with his wife, Tina. Sean
graduated in the class of 1989 and works for Comcast.
Michelle graduated in 1991 and works for Nordstrom.
Because of his six years as an Eastside Catholic parent,
Acosta knows our community from all sides; he says that
gives him an awareness of the deep commitment of all
the parents through the years, starting with the founding
parents who had a vision of the kind of school they wanted
for their children and the children to come.
“I’ve always felt I was appreciated, especially because
of the parents’ involvement,” he said. “We all have bad days
and good days, but I never have two bad days in a row
here.”
In addition to chairing the PE department since he was
hired, Acosta was the head football coach for five years and
head baseball coach for 11 years. Although his classroom is
a gym, he’s a teacher first. No matter what sport or activity
he is teaching, his focus is on encouraging students to
become lifelong learners.
“My challenge is to bring out the shy and quiet kids
as well as help the kids who are good athletes to be better,”
Acosta said. “I don’t play favorites. I am fair to everyone. I
don’t allow anybody to be a bully or a hot shot.”
Acosta personally knows the challenges our studentathletes
face when they work to balance the time
commitments of academics and athletics. A lifelong
athlete, Acosta played football and baseball at Sacramento
State University, where he majored in physical education
and minored in sociology. He says if he had decided not
to become a schoolteacher, he would have worked with
teens in trouble with the law, reaching out to them and
encouraging them to turn their lives around.
The circle of Acosta’s teaching career was completed
six years ago, when Eastside Catholic hired a new Director
of Facilities, John deMeyere. The two had met many years
earlier when deMeyere was one of Acosta’s students;
now the two are co-workers and colleagues. Soon Acosta
may teach the children of Eastside Catholic graduates,
further extending his impact and connections through our
community.
But Acosta is humble about his influence. A modest
man for whom receiving awards has always been an
embarrassing moment in the spotlight, Acosta is a true part
of every step of Eastside Catholic’s history who simply says
of his students, “I like them all.”
Eastside Catholic is promising something very unique in my view that is
greatly needed — a strong college-prep education grounded in Christian
values. It is something I benefited from greatly and I would like other
kids to have the same opportunity.
10
The notion of excellence isn’t lost on alumnus Yusuf Mehdi ’84. As a student at Eastside
Catholic, he was challenged to think critically, ask questions and find answers to life’s bigger questions
— skills that have served him well professionally and personally.
“I was a part of the first four-year graduating class, so that first year we really created a lot of
the school’s traditions and practices. Everything from picking the school colors and mascot to
determining our personality in athletic competitions we pioneered a great many things,” Mehdi
recalled.
“This has helped me greatly in my efforts to stay on top of the ever-changing technology and
software industry…. I learned that there is no substitute for hard work. Anytime I didn’t put the work
in — be it training for cross country races or reading the lessons for Western Civilization — I didn’t
do as well as I wanted. Life after Eastside Catholic has, of course, been no different.”
After graduating from Eastside Catholic, Mehdi went on to receive a B.A. in economics from
Princeton University and an MBA from the University of Washington. He now serves as Senior
Vice President of the MSN Personal Services and Business division at Microsoft Corporation, and
previously led marketing for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Windows operating system.
Despite a hectic schedule that includes helping wife Stephanie care for their three children,
Mehdi is committed to helping Eastside Catholic continue the tradition of excellence. And he
encourages others to get engaged as well.
“I would say there couldn’t be a better time to reconnect with Eastside Catholic for a couple
of reasons,” Mehdi said. “First, I am inspired at the vision and progress that Jim Kubacki and his
staff have put forth. They are doing great things and the passion for what they are doing is tangible.
Second, as each of us begin to raise children it becomes important to think about what kind of
choices our children will have. Eastside Catholic is promising something very unique in my view that
is greatly needed — a strong college-prep education grounded in Christian values. It is something I
benefited from greatly and I would like other kids to have the same opportunity.”
Mehdi serves on the school’s Marketing Committee and is helping guide marketing efforts
to raise awareness and enhance admissions. He is also excited about Eastside Catholic’s goal of a
permanent campus and is committed to helping achieve that goal.
“I believe the vision to elevate Eastside Catholic as a best-in-class school for the Northwest is
inspiring,” said Mehdi. “I have walked the grounds of the new property and I have heard the staff and
Board talk convincingly and concretely about how they are stepping up the investment every day.
“I see great things for Eastside Catholic in the future. Every day a dedicated team of teachers,
parents and volunteers are working to improve the foundation of the school. From my limited
involvement, I have seen how hard people are working to listen to feedback from the community, and
be dedicated to their vision of a great school on the Eastside.
“I had a fantastic time at Eastside Catholic 25 years ago and I believe the original excitement and
vision for the school is going strong.”
