President’s Report 2008-09

Dear Families and Friends of Eastside Catholic,
It is a joy and a privilege
to share this letter with
you as we celebrate nearly
three decades of Eastside
Catholic, the special bond
that unites us all. Just
think of the young lives
that have been formed
and transformed at a
critical time in their lives
because of the dedication
of so many caring people
associated with our great community - the talented
and dedicated faculty and staff members whose strong
relationships with our students over the years is an
Eastside Catholic hallmark; our parents, past and
present, who have been extraordinary partners with
us in the development of our students; to our alums,
who remind us through their example that the Eastside
Catholic education of the whole person is truly
education that makes a difference in the world; and,
to our friends who appreciate and support Catholic
education as the foundation that will continue to
transform our world.
At the heart of Eastside Catholic, it is our love and
pride for each student that drives us to create a
community where each student can feel respected,
loved and accepted; where each student can encounter
the person of Jesus in their daily lives; where each
student can reach and stretch to meet high expectations
in all endeavors and develop fully their God-given
gifts; and, where each student can be transformed into
a servant leader who truly lives the words of the Prayer
of St. Francis as a child of God.
Last year was a time of tremendous transition as we
opened our beautiful new campus, our wonderful
middle school, and welcomed 40 new faculty and
staff members, almost 400 new students and 800 new
parents into our community. We continue to work
through the dynamics of that change as we continue
to settle into our new home and our new reality. The
key to our future is to keep the core of what makes
our school unique while moving forward in preparing
our students for the future in which they will live and
serve.
We are fortunate to have a committed Board of
Trustees that continues to guide us with their wisdom,
thoughtfulness and energy. Together, we have
embarked on a new strategic planning process for
Eastside Catholic this year. This is good time for self-
examination, to turn the lens inward. We are asking
ourselves questions such as: If Eastside Catholic was to
disappear, what hole would it leave in the community
that could not be fi lled? We are examining fi ve pillars,
the fi rst of which is how to continue to nurture our
Catholicity and community. The other four are:
school program, organizational structure, institutional
advancement (admissions, marketing, public relations
and development); and the fi nancial planning involved
to meet the long range goals that come out of the
planning process. All fi ve pillars are based on the work
of Jim Collins in a monograph called Good to Great
and the Social Sectors.
Our tremendous Campaign will come to a close on
December 31, 2009. We celebrate the accomplishments
of the entire Eastside Catholic community who
together, attempted and achieved a building project
that no private secondary school in the Northwest has
ever accomplished.
Thank you for your continued support of Eastside
Catholic in volunteering your time, in supporting
the building of our new campus and supporting our
Annual Fund. The Annual Fund allows us to carry out
our Mission, because it covers the difference annually
between the true cost of an Eastside Catholic education
and what we charge for tuition. In a very real way,
annual giving allows us to keep great teachers, to strive
for excellence in all that we do and to support families
in our community with much needed tuition assistance.
Many families, especially in this economic climate,
need help in addition to the sacrifi ces all parents make
to send their children to Eastside Catholic. During
2008-09, we allocated over $1.3 million to help our
families realize a Catholic education for their children.
At the end of the day, Eastside Catholic has been and
will always be about the people in our community.
Together, we have created a special place for students
to nurture and grow because everyone here cares and
works to that end. With your continued help, we
will continue to form and transform our students in
wonderful ways. Thank you again and may God bless

This year it is my privilege to help ensure the
continued excellence of Eastside Catholic by serving
as the President of the Board of Trustees. The Board
is a group of passionate and responsible leaders
committed to the Mission of the school and most
importantly, to all of its stakeholders, particularly
our amazing young students and the faculty and
staff responsible for their day-to-day development.
Board members voluntarily devote their time,
professional experience and talent to ensure Eastside
Catholic’s continued success. This is a tremendous
gift to the school and to our future.
The Board of Trustees continues to be impressed with the quality and character
of the students of Eastside Catholic School and their transformation over these
formative years into successful young adults. As parents, we are confi dent that
the education our children receive at Eastside Catholic prepares them for the
rigors of college and a life of leadership and service to others. Year after year,
students display initiative, courage and a commitment to service, both in the
classroom and more importantly, throughout our community. Our heritage
proves that commitment extends far into their adult lives.
Moving to our permanent home in Sammamish has brought change to our
community and challenged us to adapt to our new campus environment while
retaining the culture and spirit from our old campus so cherished by us all. Your
Board of Trustees is committed to providing the leadership and resources to
ensure that these cherished values are always preserved.
As part of that effort, we recently embarked on an ambitious strategic planning
project. This work involves the coordinated participation of faculty, staff, parents
and trustees all working together on a variety of different initiatives which
will establish the immediate and longer term direction for Eastside Catholic.
We are excited about what this endeavor will bring to the school both now and
in the future. This planning process will have a strong impact on our students’
educational and spiritual experiences during their time spent at Eastside Catholic
and beyond.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and all of the Eastside Catholic family, I
extend our sincere appreciation to all donors listed in this publication. The
sharing of your fi nancial and volunteer resources in support of Eastside Catholic
is critical to the school maintaining a strong operating budget and our ability to
offer a strong tuition assistance program. Supporting the Annual Fund is the most
crucial thing you can do to make sure today’s students receive the best possible
education. Thank you for your support and for making a difference.
In closing, thank you from all of the Eastside Catholic trustees for the
opportunity to be associated with such an amazing family of individuals defi ned
by passion, character and integrity. Together with God’s blessings we will strive
to ensure these values are instilled in all we do so that every Eastside Catholic
student has the opportunity to reach and achieve all their hopes and dreams.

WHAT
WHAT DOES MY ANNUAL FUND GIFT MEAN TO EC?
Make a difference today by giving to Eastside Catholic’s most important fundraiser. Annually from July 1-June 30,
Eastside Catholic reaches out to our entire community for unrestricted contributions to make up the difference
between tuition and the true cost of educating our students. Currently, that difference is approximately $3,500 per
student.
Supporting the Annual Fund:
• Is critical to maintain our annual operating budget to better serve students, faculty and staff.
• Ensures a strong tuition assistance program to support students who are academically qualifi ed but
fi nancially unable to cover the cost of full tuition.
• Maintains our campus and facilities.
• Provides resources to hire and retain the best faculty and staff.

The John and Donna Luger Distinguished Leadership Award

The Jane Behrens Service Award
In memory of Jane Behrens for her outstanding service and commitment to Eastside Catholic, this award is given to a
current or immediate past-parent who shows exemplary commitment to serving Eastside Catholic in all ways.
The Alumna/Alumnus Service Award
This award is given to alumni who demonstrate the values of volunteerism and service that they learned during their years
at Eastside Catholic. Awardees have given generously of their time in service to the larger community and to Eastside
Catholic.
Crusader Awards
This award is intended to honor the dedication of individuals who comprise the very foundation of this school – our
volunteers. These people make many of the day-to-day operations of our school run smoothly – faculty and staff depend
on them week in and week out.
The Emeriti Award
The Emeriti Award
This award was founded to honor all past Trustees and Foundation Board members for their vision, courage, wisdom
and selfl ess commitment to Eastside Catholic. Their mission includes honoring the past by relating stories and memories,
reconnecting with the present by renewing friendships and celebrating accomplishments, and embracing the future by
helping the current administration build on the foundation established at the inception of the school.
