The global distribution of the genus covers roughly the northern two-thirds of South America and<br />
Mesoamerica, embracing most of the Neotropical region of Morrone (2001). Megaphanaeus and<br />
Metallophanaeus (Fig. 28 and 62, respectively) are endemic to South America east of the cordilleras.<br />
Coprophanaeus s. str., while mostly South American (Fig. 113, 237-238, 291), has penetrated Mesoamerica
