Simmons Gallery amongst their “Liverpool Collection”.<br />

Caroline Marshall (died 1901), Golden Wedding,<br />

1886, Iron Medal, by Allan Wyon, conjoined busts<br />

left, rev angel st<strong>and</strong>s below palm holding conjoined<br />

armorial shields, IN JOYFUL CELEBRATION, 45mm,<br />

48.14g (BHM 3205; Grueber EPM, p.322). Virtually<br />

mint state, extremely rare, only two known. £150-250<br />

Grueber, “English Personal <strong>Medals</strong>”, Numismatic Chronicle,<br />

Third Series, Vol XII, p 322 “two were struck in gold, fifteen<br />

in silver, forty five in copper, five in bronze, two in iron, one in<br />

platinum <strong>and</strong> one in aluminium.”<br />

The Huth family : Reginald Huth (1853-1926), Banker <strong>and</strong><br />

London representative of the Bank of Spain. The family business<br />

Frederick Huth & Co was first established by his gr<strong>and</strong>father<br />

in Corunna, Spain, in 1805. He came to London in 1809 <strong>and</strong><br />

in 1814 he took John Frederick Grüning into partnership <strong>and</strong><br />

the resulting firm, Huth & Company, was formed. Throughout<br />

the 19th century the firm is described in London directories<br />

as ‘merchants’. In 1903 Reginald Huth changed the priorities<br />

<strong>and</strong> Frederick Huth & Co was established as a merchant bank.<br />

The bank was dissolved in 1936 <strong>and</strong> absorbed into the <strong>British</strong><br />

Overseas Bank <strong>and</strong> then, in turn, the Royal Bank of Scotl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

A prolific collector of coins, his collection was sold at Sotheby’s<br />

in three sales in April <strong>and</strong> June, 1927. He also commissioned a<br />

number of fantasy Pattern Coins <strong>and</strong> medals, manufactured by<br />

Spink <strong>and</strong> John Pinches.<br />

Pollard, in the Kress catalogue, attributed the medal to Sansovino<br />

(1486-1570), but he changes the attribution to Pomedello in the<br />

Bargello catalogue. Clifford (1996), followed Weddigen with an<br />

attribution to Matteo Fide, though he points out that there is a<br />

statue of Rangone by Sansovino <strong>and</strong> that, as the medallist, he<br />

“seems much more plausible”. The BM specimen, ex Rosenheim<br />

Collection, is the only example recorded by Attwood <strong>and</strong> is<br />

catalogued as an ‘Aftercast’.<br />

gunboats at Beirut during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912.<br />

The Orsa class were a group of large torpedo boats or destroyer<br />

escorts built in the late 1930s. The Submarine Leonardo da Vinci,<br />

sunk May 1943, had been the top scoring non-German submarine<br />

of the all war.<br />

Austria defeated the Ottoman fleet off Lepanto, in the Gulf of<br />

Patras. The victory halted the Ottoman Empire’s efforts to secure<br />

Italy <strong>and</strong> Western Europe from total Ottoman invasion.

The trout hardly seems worthy of a medal when compared with<br />

the <strong>British</strong> Record of over 31lbs 12ozs (39 inches long, girth 25.5<br />

inches <strong>and</strong> the tail measured 11 inches), caught 15 March 2002,<br />

in Loch Awe. The Red Spinner Angling Society is still active.<br />

amidst the Arboretum he established.<br />

James Fellowes (1841-1916), South African born cricketer<br />

who played for the MCC in 1870, for Kent 1873-1881 <strong>and</strong> for<br />

Hampshire 1883-1885, representing the County eleven times.<br />

His bowling style is given as “Right-arm roundarm Fast”.<br />

Following his cricket-playing career, he was appointed Assistant-<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong>ant of the School of Military Engineering in 1888.

The Scotl<strong>and</strong>’s Cup was a competition for long range rifle shooting,<br />

instituted in 1861 <strong>and</strong> was initially a challenge from Scottish<br />

Volunteer regiments to their English counterparts. The Forfarshire<br />

Militia was originally raised in 1798 becoming, in 1854, the Forfar<br />

<strong>and</strong> Kincardine Artillery. It was disb<strong>and</strong>ed in 1909.<br />
